Two executives of the Lakhimijan Tea Estate in Jorhat (Assam) District were allegedly abducted by suspected miscreants from Nagaland on February 7, The Times of India report stated quoting Assam Police. The abductors, Police said, had earlier served a demand note of INR 10 million to the estate authorities alleging that their tea plantation had been extended to Nagaland soil and they need to pay the cost of the land. Since the demand could not be fulfilled, they forcibly abducted the officials, Police said, adding, that a search operation has been launched in this connection.

The Telegraph reports that the Police, on May 2, rescued five people who were abducted by suspected Karbi People’s Liberation Tigers (KPLT) militants on May 1. The five persons identified as Mithun Das, Sunny Das, Boloram Das, Kulendra Singh and Dharmendra Singh were abducted at gunpoint by a 10 to 12-member group of KPLT from an IBP petrol pump in the Geleki area in Karbi Anglong District on National Highway 37 near Kaziranga National Park. The abductees were taken to an undisclosed hill range .The police said that they arrested suspected cadres of KPLT and with the information gathered from interrogation search was launched resulting in safe return of all five on May 2.

The Shillong Times reports that Arunachal Pradesh Police rescued a businessman earlier abducted on April 29 by IK Songbijit faction of National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB-IKS) militants from his farmhouse at Pasighat in East Siang District after a fierce encounter with the rebel outfit at Bora Jaldobi village in Assam’s Dhemaji District, a top Police officer said on May 3. A Police team lead by East Siang Superintendent of Police (SP), Devendra Arya rescued 65-year-old Keshav Pandey from the captivity of the militants after about one hour gun battle in the night of May 2 and arrested four cadres, identified as Rajiv Narzary, Suresh Basumatary, Bolin Boro and Tengana Narzary while three others managed to escape. Pandey, who owns a cattle farm near Partung area inside the Daying Ering Wildlife sanctuary was abducted after a few miscreants entered his farm disconnecting the power supply.

Separately, the IK Songbijit faction of National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB-IKS), on May 21, denied its hand in abduction of Aditya Jaiswal, son of a businessman in Sonitpur District on May 19. The Telegraph reports on May 21 that Assam Police want the trial of 16 militants to be shifted from Haflong in Dima Hasao District to Silchar in Cachar District of South Assam because of security reasons. The militants, including 10 leaders and cadres of the Dima Halim Daogah (DHD) and rest six from the National Socialist Council of Nagaland-Isak-Muivah (NSCN-IM), were picked up following various encounters with the Security Forces in the District during the past one year.

Two 9 mm pistols, one 7.65 mm pistol, two country–made pistols and ammunition were recovered from them. Kokrajhar Police stated that around 26 Nepali boys received training at a camp in Myanmar through the Isak-Muivah faction of National Socialist Council of Nagaland (NSCN-IM) and added that after returning they started working for the IK Songbijit faction of National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB-IKS). Further, the Police stated that NDFB-IKS was outsourcing activities like kidnapping and extortion to these individuals and that they may have a hand in the abduction of four Bhutanese nationals on August 8. The Telegraph adds that five persons from Barapeta village had gone to neighbouring Helsiguri village for some work when they came across a group of militants. Baksa Deputy Commissioner Vinod Seshan said they suspect the involvement of NDFB-IKS, but “cannot confirm it now”, since Investigations are going on. Unidentified militants on December 29 abducted two youths from 3 Kilo area of Umrangsu in Dima Hasao District, reports The Telegraph. Police said a group of five armed men barged into one Nikhil Malakar's house and abducted his son Sanjoy Malakar (17) and his friend Monir Ali (20) at gunpoint.
