They were identified as Ch. Surajit Singh (26) and M. Pandit Singh (21) of Tarakoon Sangbia under Moirang police station of Bishanpur District in Manipur. Two cellular phones of Assam and Manipur network were recovered from their possession. Both of them were later handed over to Lakhipur Police and were subsequently produced before the CJM Court at Silchar in Cachar District January 4.

Sentinel reports that a designated Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (TADA) court on February 16 deferred its decision on bail applications of United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) ‘vice-chairman’ Pradip Gogoi and ‘publicity secretary’ Mithinga Daimary by a few days. Meanwhile, the Assam Government stated that it has no objection if the two jailed ULFA leaders were granted bail by the court, adds Telegraph. The Government made the submission before the designated court during the hearing of the bail plea. A source said that all the jailed ULFA leaders were likely to be released in phases as part of the groundwork for starting a dialogue.

His counsel said that the bail was granted on conditions that till the disposal of the cases he would not travel abroad, deposit his passport, if any, in the court and not leave Assam, area under the jurisdiction of the court, without prior permission from the court or the officer-in-charge of the Police Station of the area where he is a permanent resident.

When asked to offer his views on ULFA ‘commander-in-chief’ Paresh Baruah’s rejection of a State-level convention by the peace forum constituted to take forward the peace process, Rajkhowa declined to make any comments. A trader, Rabin Agarwal, who was rescued from the Kamtapur Liberation Organisation (KLO) militants during their bid to abduct him on April 22, received three text messages from two Assam numbers on May 1, reports Telegraph. The messages said Agarwals would have to pay INR 10 million or face dire consequences. The messages also mentioned that the time and venue where the money should be sent would be communicated later. A KLO militant, Gopal Barman alias Marang Singh, was arrested while trying to abduct the trader on April 22. Gopal, who hailed from Kanturka in Habbibpur, had been trained in Bangladesh and had been in the Korkajhor forest of Assam for 12 years. He had been remanded in Police custody for 14 days and was handed over to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on April 30 for further interrogation.

Daimary was produced at the Court of Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM), Kamrup after remaining in 14 days’ Police custody in connection with two different cases. The CBI had already filed the composite charge sheet in the CJM court naming 19 persons as accused in one of the biggest ever terror attack.

On November 16, the TADA Court wanted to know if the Government had any objection to granting of bail to Baruah in the above three cases. Government counsel K. The Court also imposed four conditions on Baruah while granting the bail. Daimary was released on two sureties of INR 25,000 each as the public prosecutor for the Government did not object to the bail plea. The Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act (TADA) Court, Guwahati on December 30 granted bail to the chairman of the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) Arabinda Rajkhowa, in connection with all the six TADA cases registered against him, reports Assam Tribune. The ULFA chief was allowed to go against a bail amount of INR 1 lakh with two sureties of the like amount. The TADA Court granted the bail on condition that the accused shall not leave the country till the case is disposed of and must also deposit his passport, if any, to the TADA Court.
