An estimated twenty heavily armed terrorists of the National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) massacred thirteen civilians at Dailongjhar in Bongaigon district on the night of January 15. While one of the victim was of Bihari origin, all the others were of Bengali origin. News reports said that the NDFB terrorists had come to the village, where a festival was on, looking for terrorists of a rival outfit, Bengali Tiger Force (BTF). They initially pulled away two youth away from the site of the celebrations and killed them. Immediately thereafter, they returned and opened fire on the crowd killed eleven more. Five others were injured in the attack. Security forces have launched massive combing operations in the area.

Acting on a tip-off, the Army carried out search operations in the Lekhajan tea estate area and challenged the terrorists. Subsequently, the terrorist was killed in the retaliatory firing. However, some accomplices of the killed terrorist managed to escape. The reports also added that the Army recovered some arms and ammunition from the encounter site.

The terrorists, camouflaged in army fatigues, stormed into a local petrol pump and resorted to indiscriminate firing thereafter. A driver and cleaner of one of the trucks passing by were killed in the firing. The terrorists also looted Rs 1 lakh in cash before they managed to escape. The report, quoting Bongaigaon district police chief A Bargohain, further said the terrorists possibly wanted to target the convoy of the Minister of State for Home Pradyut Bordoloi. The district police chief was also quoted as saying that the terrorists were misinformed that the convoy of the Minister would pass through Samthaibari Service Station, the place of the incident. The police seized a Chinese made revolver from the spot. Four suspects were reportedly arrested later in connection with the incident. In a major breakthrough, security forces recovered a huge cache of arms and ammunition belonging to the proscribed United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) terrorist outfit in Nalbari district, Assam on November 25. Quoting official sources, reports added that the Army had launched a five-hour search operation in Ghogabeel area and seized 18 rocket guns, motor bombs, 13 propeller chargers, two Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) and 123kg of RDX. Reports claimed that this huge haul was one of the biggest in Assam in the recent past. However, the State police was unaware of the incident, reports added.

The intended target was reportedly a business establishment and the NDFB is suspected to be responsible for the incident. A combing operation has been launched to arrest the suspects. In another reported incident, NDFB terrorists attacked the Dadgiri police camp, in Assam, along the Indo-Bhutan border, on December 4. On December 12, an security force (SF) personnel of the Army was killed and nine more troops were injured in an ambush laid by suspected Dima Halim Daogah (DHD) terrorists at the eight mile point between Umrangshu and Doyangmukh, North Cachar district, Assam. The slain soldier had been identified as Harsh Bahadur Thapa, a Naik in the 11 Gorkha Rifles. According to media reports, the terrorists opened fire on the Army patrol in the Umrangshu area from the nearby jungles. Following the encounter, most of the terrorists managed to flee. Later, SF personnel arrested a terrorist and recovered the body of another. The encounter is the fourth such incident in the NC hill district ince December 6, 2002. A combing operation is on the in the area, when reports last came in, to track down the terrorists.

Reports said, acting on a tip off the joint team conducted a search operation in Nalbaripam village. The terrorists opened unprovoked fire during the operation and three terrorists were killed in the ensuing encounter. A stengun, two magazines with 30 rounds of live ammunition, a detonator and 50 metres flexible wire were recovered from the incident-site.
