An assistant engineer of the Thoubal Division of the Public Works Department (PWD), identified as Menjor, was abducted by the People’s United Liberation Front (PULF) militants at Ushoipokpi area when he was returning from the head office at Khoyathong on January 28-evening, reports Imphal Free Press. His wife, Sorokhaibam Neera, said, "The party has clearly stated that there is no personal enmity with my husband and that he was abducted to get some of their demands fulfilled. He is being used as a scapegoat. I appeal to the party to release him safe and sound on humanitarian ground." Meanwhile, the PULF said that Menjor would be released upon fulfilment three conditions - PWD chief engineer Rashtrapati, who is ignoring the negotiations with the outfit should surrender, or those officers who siphoned off the funds collected in the name of the outfit into their pockets should surrender, or the agreement reached with the outfit should be put into work. The outfit threatened that if any one out of these three conditions is not fulfilled till 4pm of February 1, chief engineer would collect Menjor`s dead body.

Kunje allegedly issued a statement through the media in the name of PLA to save his son, Oinam Rejenson, who was involved in misbehaving with a family returning home from Silchar in Assam on January 11. The outfit asked Rejenson to ‘surrender’ in seven days time and warned of stern action in his failure to do so. Two other persons, Sapam Pradip and Haobijam Singjajit, who were also allegedly involved in the incident, had already ‘surrendered’ before the outfit. In order to save his son, Kunje allegedly stated claiming that the matter was settled.

While 16 other militants managed to escape, one 9-mm pistol, camouflage uniforms, jungle boots, hats, caps, utensils, and gun pouches were recovered from the hideout. Two women sympathisers, identified as Sanjenbam Indira and her younger sister Pratima, were also arrested while they were sharing information with the escaped cadres of the outfit. The driver of the vehicle, identified as Pukhrihongbam Jiban, was abducted by two cadres of the outfit and kept in confinement.
