Reports in the media on January 8 said four personnel of the India Reserve Battalion (IRB) of Manipur Rifles were killed and seven more injured in an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) blast on January 7 in Mundum Mahadeva Lamkhai, Thoubal district. The identity of the terrorists who had perpetrated the attack has not been established yet, but it is suspected that the Kanglei Yawol Kunna Lup-Oken (KYKL-O) had set off the blast. The security force personnel were heading to Kakching Lamkhai, Leingangching and Umathel areas for search operations when the attack took place, reports said. A search has been launched to apprehend the terrorists.

11 National Socialist Council of Nagaland - Isak-Muivah NSCN (I-M) terrorists were killed in an encounter with India Reserve Battalion (IRB) personnel near the Molnoi outpost, Pallel, in Manipur's Chandel district, about 45km south-east of Imphal, on March 16, media reports quoting official sources said. The incident took place when armed NSCN - IM terrorists travelling in a truck opened fire on the IRB personnel who had stopped the truck proceeding towards Imphal. Reports indicate that all the 11 NSCN (I-M) terrorists inside the truck were killed. The terrorists had earlier abducted the driver of the truck along with the vehicle from Chandel district headquarters. The State police chief, A A Siddiqui noted that the NSCN (IM) terrorists were heading towards some NSCN (IM) and Kanglei Yawol Kunna Lup (KYKL) camp in Machi, Thoubal district.

Five persons, including two terrorists and three civilians, were reportedly killed in clashes between terrorists of the Peoples Liberation Army (PLA) and Border Security Force (BSF) personnel at a place between Sugnu and Sangaikot on April 22 evening. The three civilians, a father and his two daughters aged ten and five, who were sleeping in their house, died on the spot when bullets pierced through their wall. Protesting the killing of civilians, a bandh (general shut down) was observed in the entire Sugnu area on April 23 and is reportedly expected to continue. Media reports also pointed out that many villagers have expressed their desire for shifting of the BSF post from the village and expressed concern at the non-availability of regular police at the Sugnu police station.

Two people who were fighting over the possession of the abandoned bomb were killed on the spot when the bomb exploded while two others, including the housewife who sustained serious injuries, died on the way to the hospital.

Report quoting sources noted that the incident occurred when large group of terrorists of Manipur People’s Liberation Front (MPLF) equipped with sophisticated weapons were intercepted by a combined group of National Socialist Council of Nagaland – Isak Muivah (NSCN-IM) and Zomi Revolutionary Army (ZRA) terrorists in a jungle near Latinkhan, 23 kilometres off Jiribam police station of Churachandpur district. In a major strike, armed terrorists in Manipur reportedly killed 11 Assam Rifles personnel on May 27, in an encounter and later escaped to the adjoining thick jungles and hill areas. Media reports quoting official sources said unidentified terrorists attacked an Assam Rifles convoy from both sides of a hilly road when the latter reached Tongsong near Sangsad village on Imphal-Ukhrul Road. A vehicle in the convoy was totally destroyed when the terrorists lobbed grenades at it. The soldiers, who included an officer, died on the spot. Sources Reports also said the terrorists looted five AK 47 rifles. A large posse of security force led by a senior official were reportedly rushed to the spot and have launched a massive combing operation to track down the fleeing terrorists.

Two Kuki terrorists and a civilian were killed in an encounter with security forces on a door-to-door search operations following a tip-off about the presence of terrorists at Itham Moirangpurel Seijang village, about 20 km north east of Yairipok police station in Manipur, on June 16 morning. According to media reports, the joint team led by the State police and the Assam Rifles were fired upon by terrorists. Following a fierce encounter three persons were reportedly killed while several suspected terrorists managed to escape. Though security reinforcements were rushed to the area from both Yairipok and Imphal to arrest the escaped terrorists, no progress has been reported. While the security forces claim that all the three killed were terrorists, family members of one of the dead claimed he was innocent and had gone to the house of his friend to watch television. Several arms and ammunition, including an SLR, an AK rifle, 25 electronic detonators and incriminating documents were reportedly seized from the encounter site.

According to media reports, four suspected terrorists of the proscribed Kuki Revolutionary Army (KRA) were killed in an encounter with security force personnel of the 21st Assam Rifles (AR) near Keithelmanbi village, in Senapati district, Manipur, on December 17. Quoting a statement issued by the Press Information Bureau’s defence wing, reports added that, at the site of encounter, two 9 mm pistols with nine rounds of ammunition and a .22 rifle with seven rounds were recovered.
