On the night of February 25, four suspected Kuki terrorists were killed and a civilian injured in a fierce encounter with Assam Rifles personnel at the Moreh border town in Chandel district of Manipur. Two AK-47 rifles and a M16 rifle were recovered from the spot. Official sources said some militants were reported to have crossed the Indo-Myanmar International border at Moreh during the encounter under cover of darkness. Underground Kuki National Army (KNA) and Kuki National Front (KNF) are active in the area, sources said.

According to army sources, the youth was arrested eight live ammunition and a vehicle during a search operation at Uripok area. Afterwards, he led the troops to hideouts of the party in Kwakeithel, Naorem, Utlou and Leimram village to recover weapons. In Leimram village he dug out a hidden revolver and fired at the troops following him. In the exchange of fire he was killed.

According to Army sources, following the arrests of two UNLF terrorists at Moirang Kampu, a team of the Assam Rifles conducted the operation and also recovered a .38 pistol and a magazine, besides a wireless set. Meanwhile, a housewife was also arrested from the same village on charges of providing assistance in money transaction to the UNLF. Nearly rupees 20,000, ten grams of gunpowder and an IED wire were recovered from her possession.

Security forces busted an underground camp of the National Socialist Council of Nagaland-Issac-Muivah (NSCN-IM) and the Kanglei Yawol Kann Lup (KYKL-O) at Ngariyan near Bishenpur and arrested seven terrorists including a self-styled ‘major’, a self-styled ‘second lieutenant of the NSCN(I-M) and a woman terrorist of the KYKL-O in the night of August 24. However, 12 terrorists managed to escape to nearby jungles. The camp was busted after an encounter with the Border Security Force (BSF) and the NSCN-IM and KYKL-O terrorists. Security forces also recovered one AK 56 rifle, five magazines of different weapons, a large number of ammunition, Chinese-made hand grenade and some uniforms from the arrested terrorists. Receipts of collection of over Rs. 200,000 from different officials, public leaders and other sources were also recovered.

Giving details of the raids, sources said that the Chairman of another terrorist outfit, the Kangleipak Communist Party (KCP), Mayang was also arrested in the raids at Tamu, Namphalong and Khunjao areas in Myanmar bordering Manipur’s Chandel district between November 2 to 8. The raids are reported to be a sequel to counter insurgency operations initiated by the Border Security Force (BSF) on the Indian side of the border. Most of those arrested had fled Manipur after the BSF raids. Other terrorist leaders arrested were UNLF General Secretary Hameboa, UNLF Women’s wing ‘commandant’ Nganbi Devi, UNLF Women’s wing ‘second commandant’ Banti Devi and UNLF ‘General Section Officer’ Yanachou. Reports added that approximately 1,400 sophisticated weapons were seized. Of these, about 600 belonged to the UNLF and the People’s Liberation Army and the remaining to arms dealers. Over rupees one crore in cash, a huge quantity of gold and 20 rocket launchers were also seized. The Myanmar Army reportedly also recovered equipment used in printing counterfeit currency.

According to media reports, the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) claimed that the Myanmar Army had seized a huge cache of arms and ammunition from the hideouts of the United National Liberation Front (UNLF) of Manipur recently. The publicity wing of the ULFA reportedly said that the weapons, including 1,500 AK series rifles and SLRs, were seized from the UNLF hideouts by the Army during the first week of November. As reported earlier, the Myanmar Army had conducted a series of raids in Tamu, Namphalang and Khunjao, western Myanmar, and seized a huge cache of arms and ammunition, and also arrested senior UNLF leaders. The ULFA while denying the arrest of Sanayama, a senior leader of the UNLF, added that this was the propaganda of security agencies to dampen the spirit of the cadres of the outfit.
