Nagaland Post reports that miscreants blew up a State Government-run lower primary school at Kachurthal village under Ramnathpur Police station areas in Assam’s Hailakandi District near Mizoram border in the night of March 9. Police said the blast was triggered by suspected Mizoram-based miscreants. However, there was no report of any loss of life. Sources said border dispute between the two neighboring States has been a contentious issue for past many years. Mizos claim Kachurthal village is within the boundary of Mizoram. The Shillong Times reports that suspected Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) militants, on May 23, morning opened fired at the Construction Company based at Swangre in West Khasi Hills District leading to retaliation from Police personnel who were guarding the company premises. As the Police personnel opened retaliatory fire, the militant fled from the scene. Though no casualty or injury was reported on either side, search at the site led to the recovery of a live grenade, one SLR magazine and one AK magazine. Sources informed that recently the GNLA served demand notes to the company headquarter located at Samanda in East Garo Hills where senior officials of the company are stationing. However, the company refused to pay any money to the GNLA, which might have infuriated the militant group leading to the failed attack on the Swangre camp, sources added.

A student was killed and 13 others were injured in the Diphu town of Karbi Anglong District on July 31 when Police opened fire to control group of protesters who attacked the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) office and local Congress leaders’ residences, over non-fulfilment of the demand for a Karbi State, reports The Telegraph. The protesters set ablaze six vehicles parked and vandalised the KAAC office. The mob also partially burned down the houses of six executive members of the council. The protesters led by different Karbi organisations demanded a separate ‘homeland’ for the Karbis on the lines of Telangana. They urged the Central and the State Government to initiate steps to create a ‘homeland’ for the Karbis under the Article 244(A) or Article 3 of the Constitution. State Additional Director-General of Police (law and order), A.P. Rout said that Curfew has been imposed and additional forces were being rushed to the District.

People protested against imposition of curfew and clashed with the police near Matipung reserve forest on Diphu town’s outskirts, adds The Telegraph. The people attacked on-duty cops, forcing the latter to open blank fire. No one, however, was injured in the skirmish. Protesters attacked and damaged the All India Radio (AIR) station and set ablaze two forest department offices in Diphu town. The protesters also attacked the Axom Sahitya Sabha building, which also houses the Diphu museum, at Lorulangso in Diphu town of Karbi Anglong District. The mob’s attempt to set ablaze the building was, however, foiled by police who reached the site immediately after receiving reports about the incident. Further, unidentified arsonists set ablaze a local Congress office at Phuloni and a Public Works Division (PWD) inspection bungalow at Dengaon in Karbi Anglong District. The disturbance also spread to Bokajan & Hamren subdivision where mobs set ablaze three buildings, including two inspection bungalows, a local education department office and a timber-laden truck respectively. A Police source said more Security Forces had reached the hill district today to boost strength of the existing eight companies of Army and Central Armed Police Forces. Meanwhile, former ‘publicity secretary’ of the now-disbanded United People’s Democratic Solidarity (UPDS), Wajuru Mukarang, said that people were angry because the Centre had lied to them, saying no new state was possible without putting in place a States Reorganisation Commission (SRC) first, reports The Telegraph. UPDS leader, Wajuru Mukarang further said, “We were never satisfied; that was not what we wanted. We were made to sign the memorandum of settlement.” Mukarang warned that if the Government could betray them, they could go back to militancy too. Also, Hill State Democratic Party (HSDP), which is demanding a State comprising Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao District, has called a 100-hour Bandh (strike) from August 5.

Unidentified militants triggered an (IED) blast injuring five persons, including two students at Marwari Dharmashala in Imphal on October 29, reports The Sangai Express. The injured were identified as Abujam Arun (21), Raghunath Manto (35),and Shambhu Shaha (40), both from Sitamari District in Bihar, Kishan Chakraborty and Rajdweep Sharma. Superintendent of Police (SP) of Imphal West, K Jayenta said “We don’t think today’s explosion was a target on migrant workers. It could be connected with monetary demanded slapped by underground organizations on the business community in Dharamsala area, “There have been reports of hefty demands served on the traders in the area and the blast could be a warning to them to cough up the money soon, the SP said and added that the police, nevertheless, have begun a probe to ascertain the motive behind the blast.“With the militants relying on explosive devices we have also changed our operational strategy to check their subversive activities in the city area in view of the rising number of shoppers for the upcoming festivals including Kut, Ningol Chak-kouba and Diwali etc,” the SP said.

One of the most daring and audacious attacks by the Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) militants, it carried out three violent attacks in different incidents on December 11. The first attack by the GNLA militant group was targeted at Tisha Auto Agency petrol station in Chasingre on the outskirts of Tura. Four militants brandishing AK rifles walked up to the gas station rounded up the employees and opened fire injuring pump operators, Nobu Hajong and Bishu Roy. In the second incident, the same group of militants fled towards the foothills of Tura peak and on their way attacked a relay station of the Meghalaya Police Radio Organization located at Darichekgre. While the two police radio operators managed to escape, the militants exploded two bombs inside the relay station destroying the equipment. The communication centre at Darichekgre, which is also known as a repeaters’ station, relays transmission between Shillong and Tura and plays a vital role in providing communication during counter-insurgency operations in the region. In the third incident, another group of GNLA militants fired upon two coal trucks transporting Police SWAT commandos for operation in the Nangalbibra region of South Garo Hills District. In the attack a Police commando sustained bullet injuries on his leg.
