Two Hizb-ul-Mujahideen (HM) militants, including a self-styled commander of the outfit, were killed in a gun-battle with the security forces (SFs) in the Pattan area of Baramulla district on February 11, Daily Excelsior reported. A defence spokesman said two AK rifles, three under barrel grenade launchers and four hand grenades were recovered from the encounter site. The slain militants were identified as ‘district commander’ Zahoor Ahmad Ganai a.k.a. Firdous and Nazir Ahmed Parry, according to Tribune.

A militant of the Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) was killed by the security forces in a gun-battle at Rampore in the Sopore area of Baramulla district on March 12, according to Daily Excelsior. While Defence sources confirmed the death of one militant, Police officials insisted that three militants of the group were "believed to be dead." The Deputy Inspector General of Police (North Kashmir) said that no dead body had been recovered till late night. Unnamed officials said that Lashkar-e-Toiba's radio intercepts since the evening were also mentioning death of three militants.

Security forces (SFs) killed Hafiz Naasir, one of the most wanted militants and the Kashmir valley chief of the Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT), in an encounter at village Chatlura near Sopore town in the Baramulla district on March 16, according to Daily Excelsior. Lt. Col. M. S. Kadam, the officiating Commanding Officer of Rashtriya Rifles (22 Battalion), and another soldier, identified as Pradeep Kumar, are reported to have died and four SF personnel injured in the encounter. Hafiz Naasir, a Pakistani militant, had been appointed sometime in 2007 as LeT operational chief in Kashmir after working in the Valley for about ten years. One AK-47 rifle was recovered from his possession. Deputy Inspector General of Police (north Kashmir), Dr. B Srinivas, described Naasir as the most wanted militant in the Baramulla, Bandipora and Kupwara districts.

According to Daily Excelsior, two Hizb-ul-Mujahideen (HM) ‘commanders’ in north Kashmir -Tanvir Ahmed Zargar and Imtiyaz Ahmed Khan – were killed by the security forces (SFs) in a 12-hour-long gun-battle in the outskirts of Baramulla town on April 23. A constable of the Jammu and Kashmir Armed Police, Mushtaq Ahmed Fafoo, and a civilian, Ghulam Qadir Mir, were wounded in the incident. Tanvir Ahmed Zargar alias Tanna Khan had been functioning as ‘district commander’ since 2004 while Imtiyaz was described as a ‘battalion commander.’ The Deputy Inspector General of Police, Dr B. Srinivas, said that Tanvir and Imtiyaz were the last two listed and identified commanders of the HM. He claimed that Baramulla town was now free of militants. He said that as many as 20 senior militant functionaries and commanders had been neutralized in north Kashmir in the last four months.

Two local militants of the Hizb-ul-Mujahideen (HM), one of whom was the outfit’s financial chief, were killed in an encounter with the security forces (SFs) in the Pattan area of Baramulla district on April 28-evening, The Tribune reported. The slain militants were identified as Zahoor Ahmad Waza alias Zee Shan, financial chief of the HM of Palhalan and Mohammad Yousuf Bhat alias Muneer. Police sources said the house in which the militants were hiding was damaged. Waza had been appointed as the financial unit chief after Hanief Khan was killed in an encounter with the troops in the Tral area of Pulwama district recently. The police said Waza was an expert in fabrication of remote as well as cell phone improvised explosive devices (IED). Deputy Inspector General of Police (North Kashmir), Dr. B. Srinivas, stated that after the death of four highly positioned militants in Baramulla and Handwara earlier this month, the Pattan area had been fully cleared of HM by the SFs, according to Daily Excelsior.

Sajjad Afghani, the Jammu and Kashmir chief of Harkat-ul-Mujahideen (HuM), was shot dead by the Police on April 29 in a gun-battle at Sopore Sub District Hospital in the Baramulla district. Sources told Daily Excelsior that a seven-member Police party conducted a raid on the residential quarter of Pharmacist Shaukat Ahmed Pir at Old Sub District Hospital, close to Iqbal Market, at 10:00pm (IST). On sighting the Police, a heavily armed militant reportedly lobbed a hand grenade and opened bursts of AK-47 gunfire, injuring Constable Abdul Majeed. In the subsequent encounter, Police shot dead the militant and arrested the Pharmacist. The Superintendent of Police (Sopore), Imtiyaz Hussain Mir, confirmed that the slain Pakistani militant was HuM chief Sajjad Afghani. Before shifting his base to Sopore, Afghani had reportedly operated in the Kupwara area for several years. He was allegedly involved in over a dozen armed attacks on security forces, Police and soft targets in north Kashmir in the last 10 years.

Srinivas, said that militants lobbed a hand grenade on a 10-member group of pilgrims from Uttar Pradesh, who had completed their pilgrimage and were visiting the tourist location of Gulmarg. Militants targeted the visitors with an IED blast near Hotel Kingway. While a pilgrim, Ashok Kumar, and a 16-year-old Kashmiri, Mohmmad Yousuf Chopan, died, five persons were wounded in the explosion. Militants also attacked another convoy of pilgrims near Ganderbal with three grenade explosions but failed to cause any damage even as a follow up gun-battle was in progress between the militants and security forces till last reports came in.
