Two persons were injured in Lolab area in Kupwara District, after violent stone-throwing clashes erupted between locals and Security Forces (SFs) over the killing of three LeT militants on January 31, reports Daily Excelsior. The clashes erupted soon after the funeral-in-absentia for two militants as locals resorted to massive stone-pelting on Lalpora Police Station. The residents of Dardpora and Lalpora areas offered the absentia funeral at Jindyal village as Police didn’t handover bodies of two militants to them.

Three persons were killed and six others were injured as Army reportedly opened firing on protesters in Handwara town of Kupwara District in the afternoon of April 12, reports Daily Excelsior. The protestors had attacked an Army bunker at Handwara Chowk. They assaulted the personnel deployed there, ransacked the bunker and attempted to set on fire the bunker. At least nine Army personnel were trapped inside the bunker. However, these Army men were later rescued. Inspector General of Police, Kashmir range, SJM Gillani while giving details stated that there was an allegation of misbehavior against a security force personnel with a girl and a mob gathered there and tried to set afire the Army bunker and ransack it. “In retaliation, the troops fired at the mob in which two men were injured and later they succumbed to injuries,” he added. Another injured person also died.

A protestor, identified as Jehangir Ahmad Wani, son of Ghulam-ud-Din Wani, resident of Nagri, Drugmulla, was hit by a teargas shell at Drugmulla in Kupwara District of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) during protests on April 13 and succumbed to his injuries later, reports Daily Excelsior. Subsequently, angry protesters set ablaze Police Post Langate and also attacked Police Post Magam. Over two dozen civilians were injured in the clashes across Kupwara. An unnamed police spokesman said that 110 policemen and two Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) troopers were injured in clashes that broke out at several places across Kashmir. As reported earlier, three persons were killed and six others were injured as Army reportedly opened firing on protesters in Handwara town of Kupwara District in the afternoon of April 12.

A youth was killed and three others injured as Security Forces (SFs) opened firing in Kupwara District of North Kashmir on April 15, to disperse protesters who were pelting stones on an Army camp during a protest demonstration, reports Daily Excelsior. And 60 people including 40 Policemen were injured in massive protests that broke out across Kashmir at many places. Protests rocked at many places in Kupwara and its adjoining areas to mark the fourth day of death of three persons who were killed in firing by SFs in Handwara town on April 12, following allegations of molestation of a girl. However, girl denied any molestation attempt by Army trooper. A Police official said four persons were injured when SFs opened fire on a group of protesters who were pelting stones on an Army camp at Kupwara’s Natnusa area. Among the injured, a youth Arif Ahmad was injured critically and later succumbed. Two of the injured have been identified as Amir Ahmad Sheikh of Natnusa, Danish Ahmad Sheikh of Wadipora. The spokesman said that more than 40 police and security force men were injured in these clashes. “Despite severe provocations the deployment on ground exercised maximum restraint. However, at one place Natnusa in Kupwara the mob tried to enter the forces camp and the Army had to resort to firing in which one person lost his life”, he added. The spokesman said that the incidents of pelting were reported from Mir Mohalla, Hyhama Chowk, Kralpora in Kupwara, Kralgund, Magam in Handwara and Cement Bridge, Baramulla as well. “We appeal the public to maintain calm and not to resort to violence and attack security force and police establishments”, he added.

Hundreds of people resorted to stone-pelting to facilitate fleeing of a militant from cordon in Kupwara village in Kupwara District on April 28, reports Daily Excelsior. Army’s 28th Rashtriya Rifles (RR), Police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel cordoned off Pir Mohalla area of Kantpora in Lolab area of Kupwara District following a tip off about presence of militants. As the joint team of Security Forces (SFs) intensified the combing operations, the militants believed to be hiding in the Pir Mohalla near the Jamia Masjid tried to break the cordon. The SFs engaged them in a gunfight which continued for nearly an hour. However, hundreds of residents of Kantpora and its adjoining localities came out of their houses and protested. The protesters marched towards encounter site and resorted to stone-pelting on SFs in order to facilitate feeling of trapped militants. Police and CRPF retaliated by firing teargas shells to quell the protests. Due to clashes, the operation against militants got disrupted and later the SFs called off the operation.

A Police spokesman said here that overall situation throughout the Valley remained under control on July 14, though some incidents of stone pelting were reported, reports Daily Excelsior. “Some stray and intermittent incidents of stone pelting were reported from Qoimoh, Kulgam, Khudwani, Trehgam, Lalpora, Battergam, Kupwara, Hyhama, Hatmulla, Warpora, Sopore, Arampora, Cement bridge, Baramulla, Palhalan, Suzaith, Parimpora, Narbal, Chinkral Mohalla and Habakadal”, the spokesman said. The spokesman said that a mob set on fire a residential house in Bamdoora in Kokernag in Anantnag District. The house belonged to Farooq Ahmad Kawa and in this house Burhan Wani and his associates were killed by SFs in the operation. A mob of 4000 in Bamdoora also targeted high density orchard of Khurram Shafi Mir. They uprooted 4000 trees and set afire a tractor, two huts, a bathroom and two bikes. The managers of the orchard, however, saved their lives.

Huge contingents of forces have been deployed all across Valley and particularly in curfew-bound areas. Despite stringent security arrangements, clashes erupted between youths and security forces at multiple places in Valley. The clashes took place at Palhallan, Tappar Pattan, Bandipora Town, Regipora Kupwara, Trehgam, Lalpora, Kralpora, Tikipora and other areas. In Drugmulla in Kupwara District, a mob targeted SFs who opened fire in response, resulting in injuries to three civilians. A patrol party of SFs was attacked by a mob with stones at Delina in Baramulla District, injuring three SF personnel, the official said. In retaliation, SFs opened fire in which three civilians were injured. A youth was critically injured in firing by SFs on stone-pelting mobs at Manigam in Ganderbal District. A mob indulged in stone-pelting in Sopore and in the retaliatory action, four persons sustained pellet injuries. Two others were injured in clashes in nearby Pattan town. Clashes broke out in the locality after men and women took to streets to protest against the killings in Kashmir. SFs tried to disperse the protesters who pelted stones on them leading to clashes. Over a dozen protesters were injured as Police and Paramilitary forces fired tear smoke shells and pellets at protesters in Sarendoo area of Kulgam District. Hundreds of people assembled in Yaripora, Frisal and other adjoining areas and staged massive protests. SFs resorted to teargas shelling and pellet firing against the protesters, injuring over a dozen. At D K Marg in Kulgam, SFs resorted to teargas shelling and pellet firing against the protesters, resulting in injuries to around 10 of them.Reports ofprotests were also received from Qoimoh area of Kulgam as well. Curfew in Old City, Maisuma and Batamaloo areas in Srinagar and Anantnag Districts continued while in parts of the Valley restrictions were imposed in several towns to thwart protests while rest of the city observed shutdown for 33rd day. Reports of protests and clashes were reported from several parts of Valley. A large contingent of Police and Paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel were deployed on roads and streets and they had erected concertina wires at entry and exit points in several localities to prevent any protests. Around 10 persons were injured clashes broke out at Lassipora area of Sogam in Lolab area of Kupwara District. Local residents said that Police fired teargas and pellets to foil the protest, resulting in injuries to the protesters. One youth Shabir Ahmad Lone was shifted to Srinagar as he was hit by a teargas canister in his abdomen. The clashes were also reported from Lalpora in Lolab. A large number of protesters gathered at Sangrama in Baramulla District on National Highway and pelted stones on the Security Forces (SFs) who were deployed on security duty. Police and CRPF deployed fired tear smoke shells and dispersed them. Police said “about 300 miscreants assembled near Sangrama in the jurisdiction of police station Tarzoo, Sopore and started pelting stones on the police party”. “Later, they were chased away by using mild force,” the Police spokesman added. Reports said that Ganai sustained bullet injury and was shifted to Pulwama District Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries, taking the death toll in ongoing violence to 69 including 2 Policemen. Police on September 22, arrested 57 persons on charges of stone pelting and creating trouble in Jammu and Kashmir while curfew in parts of Srinagar, restrictions and shutdown paralysed life in Valley, reports Daily Excelsior. Curfew remained in force in parts of Srinagar on September 22, with Police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) patrolling the streets, which had blocked the main roads with concertina wire and stationed mobile bunkers at various places in these areas to prevent violence. However, in rest of the Valley, there was no curfew but restrictions at many places. The shops, business establishments, schools and colleges remained closed and traffic was off the roads. However, some private vehicles were plying in Civil Lines area of Srinagar. The train services between Banihal and Baramulla remained suspended since July 9. The mobile internet and pre-paid mobile services remained suspended. According to a statement issued by the Zonal Police Headquarters Kashmir, the overall situation remained under control across the Valley. “There was no curfew in the Valley except in Anantnag town and the areas falling under three police stations of Srinagar city,” the statement said. It said 57 individuals found involved in creating disruption in traffic movement, opening of shops as also damaging public, private property were arrested.Stone-throwing clashes were reported at Habba Kadal and Fateh Kadal areas of Old Srinagar during which Security Forces (SFs) used teargas and pepper gas against the protesters. In the evening, stone-pelting clashes erupted at Nowhatta, Rajouri Kadal, Zaldagar, Gojwara and few other areas of Old City. Clashes erupted after SFs contingents were withdrawn from the old city areas. Police fired teargas and pepper grenades against the protesters. Clashes erupted at Gugloosa and Trehgam villages of Kupwara district, Balsoo village of Kulgam district and in Shopian town. At Pulwama villages, the protesters enforcing shutdown resorted to stone-pelting on private vehicles. The violent stone-throwing clashes also erupted at Khanpora in Baramulla District after Police arrested one Fayaz Kumar from the area. Police responded by firing teargas towards the rock-throwing protesters. The clashes continued for several hours but no one was reported to have sustained injuries. Clashes erupted between youth and SFs in Bijbehara area of South Kashmir’s Anantnag District while scores of vehicles were damaged by the youth in the area. The youth took to streets and ransacked windowpanes of vehicles and started pelting stones on SFs at Goriwan area. SFs fired tear gas to disperse the youth.

However, in other areas of Srinagar Security Forces (SFs) were deployed in sensitive areas but there was civilian movement without any disruption in these areas. In the evening, stone-throwing clashes erupted at many Old City localities including Nowhatta and Noorbagh during which SFs fired teargas and pepper gas at the protesters. In Civil Lines and uptown areas of the Srinagar, movement of private transport and pedestrians was seen since early morning but shops, commercial establishments, educational institutes and most of the banks were closed. The SFs were deployed at sensitive areas in strength. Clashes and protests erupted at Samboora area of Pulwama District in which three people sustained injuries and also at Bijbehara in Anantnag District and Drugmulla in Kupwara District of Central Kashmir. The Zonal Police Headquarters Kashmir statement said that the situation remained by and large normal and peaceful on September 27 although a couple of stray stone pelting incidents were reported. The statement, an incident of arson was reported from Kulgam this afternoon (September 27). “Miscreants in their attempt to disturb the situation set on fire a Panchayat Ghar at village Kujar in District Kulgam,” it said.
