Two Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist)cadres surrendered before Police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF)personnel in Dantewada District of Chhattisgarh on March 20, reports The Pioneer.The surrendered Maoists were identified as, Suden Kawasi (31) and Handoram Poyami (30) – both residents of Bhairamgarh village in Bijapur District and were active as ‘jan militia’ members of CPI-Maoist. The Superintendent of Police (SP),Abhishek Pallava, said that the duohad joined CPI-Maoist in 2005, and was tasked with spreading Maoist propaganda in more than a dozenvillages in the area.They were allegedly involved in an attack on security personnel in 2007 in Barsoor area in the Districtin which one security personnel was killed, the SP added.

A Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) commander identified as, Pradeep alias Bhima Kunjam, carrying a cash reward of INR 800,000 on his head surrendered in Dantewada District of Chhattisgarh on May 28, reports The Times of India. According to the Superintendent of Police (SP) Abhishek Pallava, Kunjam, a deputy commander of platoon number 24 surrendered before the Police expressing that he was extremely disappointed with hollow ideologies of Maoists and wished to surrender. He was involved in the ambush laid against Security Forces (SFs) including Burkapal attack that killed 25 Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel in 2016. Kunjam had joined CPI-Maoist in 2008 as Malangir LOS (Local Organizational Squad) member and later underwent training for the mobile interception, repairing of radio, wireless sets, etc. He was also close to senior Maoist leaders like Ganesh Uikey and has worked for them. Later in 2017, he was posted as deputy commander in Malangir Area platoon number 24.

A Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadre, identified as Bheema Markam (22), carrying a cash reward of INR 200,000 on his head surrendered before the Police in Dantewada District of Chhattisgarh on June 30, reports The Pioneer. The Superintendent of Police (SP), Abhishek Pallav said that, Markam, a resident of Katekalyna in the said District, was involved in the October 30, 2018 Nilawaya ambush in the District in which a Doordarshan cameraman and three Policemen were killed. Markam was also part of a Maoist team that attacked a Police convoy in 2019 at Petedabba in the District, the SP said adding that he had joined the CPI-Maoist in 2014 and was a member of the Maoist platoon number 24 active under ‘Malangir Area Committee’.

18 Maoists, four of them carrying cash rewards on their heads, surrendered before SFs in Dantewada District of Chhattisgarh on July 1, reports The Pioneer. According to the Superintendent of Police (SP) Abhishek Pallava, the surrendered Maoists, included a woman and were active in Bhansi-Kamaloor area under the Bhairamgarh Area Committee of CPI-Maoist. They were mainly tasked with damaging railway tracks, putting up Maoist banners and posters, spreading Naxalite propaganda, and supplying ration to them. Of those surrendered Maoists, Telaam Bhima and Mangal Bhaskar were active as head of the Dandakaranya Adivasi Kisaan Majdoor Sangthan (DAKMS, a frontal wing of Maoists) while Telaam Chaitu and Santu Kunjam headed CNM (Chetna Natya Mandli, a cultural outfit of Maoists) – all four carried a reward of INR 100,000 each on their heads, the SP said adding that the remaining 14 cadres, all of lower ranks, were working as members of DAKMS and CNM groups.

Nine Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres, including four with cumulative cash rewards of INR 1.6 million, surrendered in separate incidents in Bijapur and Dantewada Districts of Chhattisgarh on July 4, reports The New Indian Express. In one incident, two Maoists, identified as Makdam Deva (36) and a woman Maoist - Sumitra Chepa surrendered in Bijapur District. The Inspector General of Police (IGP) Sundarraj P. said, “Makdam Deva was an active member of Jagargunda-Basaguda area committee. He joined the CPI-Maoist in 1995, and had a reward of INR 500,000 on his head. He was involved in several attacks on Police teams, including the Basaguda attack wherein two security personnel were killed, as well as murder of civilians in the area. While, the woman rebel - Sumitra Chepa, was active as section commander of battalion no. 1 of PLGA (People’s Liberation Guerrilla Army), armed wing of CPI-Maoist, and was involved in attacks in Sukma, including the 2014 Kasalpad attack in which 15 Policemen were killed, and Pidmel attack in 2015 wherein three Policemen had lost their lives. She carried a reward of INR 800,000 on her head.” Seven Maoists surrendered in Dantewada District, after being impressed by ‘Lon Varratu’ (return to your village) campaign launched by local Police, the Superintendent of Police (SP) Abhishek Pallava said. Among them, a woman cadre identified as Hadme Mandavi (20), a member of military platoon no. 26, and Lakhma Mandavi (26), a ‘Jan militia commander’, were carrying cash rewards of INR 200,000 and INR 100,000 on their heads respectively, the SP said adding that the rest are lower-rung members of the outfit. A Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) couple, identified as Prakash alias Pandu, a resident of Kuakonda village in Dantewada District, and his wife Hadme Kartami, a resident of Gadiras village in Sukma District, surrendered before Superintendent of Police (SP) Abhishek Pallav in Dantewada District of Chhattisgarh on July 8, reports The Pioneer. According to Police, Pandu was a member of CPI-Maoist platoon number 24 and also a medical team member while his wife was a member of CNM (Chetna Nataya Mandali), a front for the CPI-Maoist. The SP said, Pandu carried a cash reward of INR 200,000 on his head and was involved in an ambush in the NMDC (National Mineral Development Corporation) Plant area in May 2012 in which six Policemen and a civilian were killed. He was also part of a Maoist team that triggered an IED (Improvised Explosive Device) blast in Cholnar village in Dantewada in April 2015 that claimed the lives of five Security Forces (SFs).

Of the 25 cadres, Budhram Tamo (48) - head of Dandakaranya Adivasi Kisan Mazdoor Sangthan (DAKMS - a frontal wing of Maoists), Manjhi Barse (35) - head of the ‘Jan Militia’ group and woman cadre Deve Sodhi - head of Krantikari Mahila Adivasi Sangthan (KAMS- another offshoot of Maoists) were carrying cash rewards of INR 100,000 each on their heads. The Superintendent of Police (SP) Shalabh Sinha said, one of the surrendered Maoists, identified as Boddu Vyanktesh alias Rajiv, a native of Errabor in the District, was active as a ‘divisional committee member’ under Nuapada division of Maoists in Odisha. Boddu was allegedly involved in several attacks, including the Tadmetla (then in Dantewada District) massacre in 2010, in which 76 troopers died and Asirguda IED (Improvised Explosive Device) blast in Errabor in 2006, where 10 Special Police Officers (SPOs) and a civilian driver were killed, the SP said adding that he carried a reward of INR 800,000 on his head. Two other surrendered cadres - Undaam Sanna, a commander of Jagargunda LGS (Local Guerrilla Squad), and woman rebel Madkam Soni, a member of platoon no. 12, carried rewards of INR 500,000 and INR 100,000 respectively. “Sanna Markam, a member of bureau communication team of Maoists and militia deputy commander Pdoiyam Deva, were other ultras who surrendered in Sukma,” the SP said adding that the duo was allegedly involved in Burkapal ambush, in which 25 CRPF personnel were killed in 2017.
