The Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres attacked an excavation site owned by Panem Coal Mines Limited at Katahaldih in Amrapara in Pakur District and killed a security guard on January 10, reports The Telegraph. According to reports, over two dozen Maoists armed with sophisticated firearms and traditional weapons stormed the coal excavation site around 4pm (local time), firing indiscriminately on security guards posted there. One of the guards, Pramod Yadav, was killed in the firing while at least four others sustained bullet injuries. Before leaving, the Maoists set ablaze an earthmover, though company sources said three vehicles had been burnt. Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Vinay Kumar Pandey confirmed Yadav’s death, but refused to comment on the condition of the others. “So far, we have been told that one guard was killed in the firing, but we have no information about the injured,” the DIG said, adding that Pakur Superintendent of Police Mayur Patel had rushed to the spot with forces.

The day-long Ranchi District bandh (shutdown strike), on November 8, called by People's Liberation Front of India (PLFI), a break away faction of the CPI-Maoist, in support of tribals who have been opposing forceful acquisition of agricultural land in Nagri, got mixed response. Suspected PLFI rebels tried to set ablaze a truck in Lalgutuwa locality in the evening. Though the rebels set the truck on fire, Police doused it and saved the truck from major damages. "It is being investigated whether PLFI rebels played a role or it was the handiwork of some anti-social elements," said rural Superintendent of Police (SP), A V Minz. No effect of the bandh was witnessed in urban Ranchi. The State Government has acquired 227 acres of land in Nagri to construct permanent campuses of IIM Ranchi, National Law University and other educational institutions. Over 500 households in the village have been opposing the land acquisition since April, 2012.
