Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) ‘politburo’ member Misir Besra and his squad members managed to escape following an encounter with Security Forces (SFs) in West Singhbhum District of Jharkhand early on January 10 (today), reports The Tribune. Acting on a tip-off, Jharkhand Police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) launched a search operation during which Maoists opened fire on them, to which SFs retaliated, leading to a fierce gun-battle in a forest between Tumbahaka and Sarjamburu under Tonto Police Station area on January 9, Superintendent of Police (SP) Ajay Linda said. However, Besra and his squad made a hasty retreat into the thick forests, and no casualty had been reported on either side, SP, Linda said, adding that a combing operation is under way.

Following information that a squad of Maoist leader Mithilesh Singh alias Duryodhan Mahto alias Barka Da, who is carrying a reward of INR 10 million, has gathered in the foothills of Jhumra hills, and in the process of carrying out some major incident, the Bokaro District Police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel jointly launched the operation, adds prabhatkhabar.com. On seeing the Police, the squad of Mithilesh Singh started firing, to which the Police force also challenged and retaliated. However, there is no report of any casualty in the encounter.

An encounter broke out between Security Forces (SFs) and cadres belonging to Dinesh Gope's armed squad of the People's Liberation Front of India (PLFI), a splinter group of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist), in the forests of Sidma-Temna hill area under Gudri Police Station limits in West Singhbhum District of Jharkhand on February 3 morning, reports ibc24.in. Superintendent of Police (SP) Ajay Linda said along with West Singhbhum and Khunti District Forces, the 194th Battalion of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) based in Khunti had jointly launched a search operation, and as soon as the Police team reached near Sidma hill, the banned PLFI cadres started firing, the SFs also gave a befitting reply after which the Naxalites [Left Wing Extremists, LWEs] fled towards the hill in the forest. An encounter took place between the Police and the Naxalites [Left Wing Extremists, LWEs] of the Jharkhand Jan Mukti Parishad (JJMP), a splinter group of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist), in the Mangardaha Forest under Chhiddohar Police Station limits in Latehar District of Jharkhand on February 9, reports prabhatkhabar.com. In the nearly 40-minute encounter that started at 4 pm [IST] on February 9, 298 rounds of bullets were fired from both the sides. During this, the Naxalites were successful in running away after seeing the Police being overwhelmed. Although no Naxalites were arrested in this encounter, but the goods and items of the Naxalites, which includes sleeping bags, Naxalite cloth, shoes, socks, blankets, bags, plastic, gamchha etc. have been recovered from the encounter site. It was said that along with Pappu ji, Suraj ji, Lovelace Ganjhu, Ganesh ji of the Naxalite organization JJMP, his entire team was involved in the exchange of fire.

An encounter took place between the Commando Battalion for resolute Action (CoBRA) battalion and Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres in the remote Sahedapat Forest under Pesharar Police Station limits in Lohardaga District of Jharkhand on February 10, reports hindi.news18.com. On secret information, the Police launched an operation in which firing was started from the Maoists. In retaliation, bullets were fired from the Police side. Seeing the Police getting overwhelmed, the Maoists fled taking advantage of the dense forest. It is being told that the Security Forces (SFs) had surrounded the Maoists from three sides, but the Maoists managed to escape by taking advantage of the dense forests. Three squads of the Maoist organization, Ravindra Ganjhu, Ranthu Oraon and Chhotu Kherwar, are active in this area.

A wanted Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadre identified as Bal Ganjhu, carrying a reward of INR 500,000 on his head was killed by Security Forces (SFs) in a forested area in Lohardaga District of Jharkhand on February 16, reports India Today. Bal Ganjhu was killed in an ongoing operation by SFs to flush out the squad of Maoist ‘commander’ Ravindra Ganjhu, who has a reward of INR 2 million on his head, however, other militants managed to flee. SFs have so far recovered a lot of items including logistics, daily necessities, guns and ammunitions. Several ration stores and bunkers where ultras holed up were also blown up by bombs.

Jharkhand Police and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) in a joint operation, arrested nine Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres, including ‘zonal’, ‘sub-zonal’ and ‘area commanders’ during the ongoing “Operation Double Bull”, in Bulbul Forest and its surrounding areas in Lohardaga District on February 22, reports The Times of India. Among the arrested persons are ‘zonal commander’ Balram Oraon, an accused in 82 cases, ‘sub-zonal commander’ Dashrath Singh Kherwar, ‘area commander’ Markush Nagesia and members Shaileshwar Oraon, Mukesh Korba, Viren Korba, Shailendra Nagesia, Sanjay Nagesia, and Sheela Kherwar. Kherwar and Nagesia are wanted in seven and 10 extremists related cases respectively, while others are accused persons in two cases each. During the operation, the longest in recent years, which is against the Maoist squad led by ‘regional commander’ Ravindra Ganjhu, the Police have exchanged fire with the Maoists on 10 occasions, busted their bunkers and also killed one extremist. Police have recovered four weapons, including an American automatic rifle and a carbine, around 1,700 cartridges, 16 Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), codex wire, wireless sets, safety fuse and several electronic items, Rs 3.27 lakh cash and daily use articles like dress and shoes. Inspector General of Police (IGP), operations, and Jharkhand Police spokesperson Amol Homkar said, “Following a tip off that dreaded Maoist Ravindra Ganjhu who carries a reward of Rs 15 lakh [INR 1.5 million] and his squad members have gathered in Bulbul area, the security forces conducted the operation under challenging situations. Even though three personnel have been injured in IED blasts, the forces have kept on chasing the Maoists.” Police said Ganjhu’s squad was planning to indulge in violence in Bauxite mine area and target the forces.

Over 40 cases were registered against Pahan, the SP said, adding, he was the ‘sub-zonal commander’ of PLFI and recently elevated to the post of ‘secretary’. A ‘zonal commander’ of the People's Liberation Front of India (PLFI), a splinter group of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist), identified as Santosh Kandulana (25) was arrested following an encounter at Sanga village under Bandgaon Police Station limits in West Singhbhum District of Jharkhand on July 14, reports The Hindu Business Line. Acting on intelligence inputs, a joint team arrested Kandulana while he was on a visit to his in laws house at Sanga village on July 14. Kandulana opened fire in an attempt to flee, following which the team retaliated and eventually as the area was cordoned off, he was arrested. An AK-47 rifle, two AK-47 magazines, 103 live cartridges, PLFI receipt book, two touchscreen and 6 keypad mobiles, 5 SIM cards, pied pouches, black colored carry bags and items of daily use were among the items seized from his possession. Superintendent of Police (SP), Ashutosh Shekhar said, Kandulana, has been associated with the splinter Maoist group for the past 10 years, carried a bounty of INR 200,000, and has 33 cases, including six murders and 16 attempts to murders, registered against him in West Singhbhum and Khunti Districts.

Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIGP), Kolhan division, Ajay Linda said, "Two CPI(Maoist) members were gunned down in an operation at Baruda forest in Kuchai police station area," adding, that the bodies were recovered by the forces along with arms and ammunition including an SLR [Self Loading Rifle], over 100 live cartridges, magazines, detonators and wireless sets. An encounter took place between the Police and the Jharkhand Jan Mukti Parishad (JJMP), a splinter group of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist), in Kedli Tola Forest in Pesharar Panchayat (village level local self-Government institution) under Sadar Police Station limits in Latehar District of Jharkhand on September 18, reports prabhatkhabar.com. Several rounds of bullets were fired from both sides in this encounter, and after the encounter the Police launched a search operation, during which many items including rifles were recovered. Confirming the encounter, Superintendent of Police (SP), Anjani Anjan said that there was information about the gathering of JJMP militants in Kedli forest. On this information, a joint raid operation was conducted by the District Police Force. On seeing the Police in the forest, the militants started firing, to which the Police retaliated by firing on the militants, and an encounter took place between JJMP militants and Police in Kedli Tola of Pesharar Panchayat. During this, the militants fled into the forest after seeing the Police being overwhelmed. It is being told that many militants including Pappu Lohra, the supremo of Naxalite organization JJMP, Lovelesh Ganjhu were involved in the police-Naxal encounter in Latehar. After the encounter, a 315 bore rifle, four hundred bullets, two mobiles, four power banks, one rifle magazine of 315 bore, one SLR magazine, several bags, uniforms and medicines including many essential items have been recovered.

On December 1, five commandos of Central Reserve Police Forces’ (CRPF) Commando Battalion for Resolute Action (CoBRA) unit were injured in gunfights with Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) in a forest in the Tonto area of West Singhbhum District in Jharkhand, reports Times Now. The gunfight broke out after the extremists opened fire on approaching Security Force (SF) personnel, who were undertaking a search operation in the jungle. However, the Maoists managed to escape through the dense forest. Sanjay Anandrao Lathkar, Additional Director General (Operation) said, “There have been two clashes with Naxalites [Left Wing Extremists] in Chaibasa since morning [December 1], in which five CoBRA soldiers were injured.” As per reports, joint teams of CRPF and Jharkhand Police have been conducting a massive search operation in the area for the last two weeks to arrest Maoist leader Misir Besra, who carries a bounty of IN 10 million on his head. Another Maoist was arrested during the operation. Acting on a tip-off about the presence of over 18 Maoists led by CPI-Maoist self-styled 'zonal commander' Ravindra Ganju, who carries a bounty of INR 1.5 million on his head, in Korbo forest in Bagru area, a team of Jharkhand Police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel launched an operation and on spotting the SFs, the Maoists opened indiscriminate fire and retaliation from the law enforcers led to an intense gun-battle, during which, the Maoists retreated into dense forests, a senior Police officer said. SF personnel arrested two Maoists during a massive search operation launched in the forest after the encounter, he said. One of the arrested Maoists, identified as self-styled 'sub-zonal commander' Chandrabhan Pahan, was seriously injured and after being administered primary treatment by the doctor of the SFs, he was taken to Sadar Hospital in Lohardaga, where doctors declared him dead. The other arrested Maoist was identified as Govind Birijia, also a self-styled 'sub-zonal commander'. Both the Maoists carried a bounty of INR 500,000 each on their heads. Pahan was wanted in over 24 cases, including 16 in Lohardaga, while Birijia was wanted in over two dozen cases.
