Police on January 9 arrested Nanu Ram alias Prabhatji, ‘secretary’ of Koyal Sankh zone of Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist), along with a pistol and five rounds of ammunition, from Kanke Police Station area in Ranchi District, reports Telegraph India. Active for the last 21 years, he is believed to have played a role during the encounter in Latehar District on January 7, 2013, that left 11 Security Force and two civilians dead. He carried head money of INR 700,000 and is accused of killing several Policemen and setting Government vehicles on fire earlier. Senior Superintendent of Police, Saket Kumar Singh, said Ram was also a member of the outfit’s Bihar Regional Committee. He is believed to be the one who works out strategies to attack the Police. So far Ram has admitted his involvement in as many as 12 cases. He had been arrested twice before, in 1992 and 2000.

Sources said Jharkhand Police has also arrested two alleged Maoists suspected to be involved in the encounter. They have been identified as Harinath Singh and Dinesh Singh. The two Maoists had been involved in laying landmines and were also part of the firing squad. CRPF is also on a recruiting spree for offensives in this year and the next with 12,000 more men expected to join the force through centralized exams. The force is also awaiting Union Home Ministry nod to launch special recruitment drives in Maoist-affected, border and tribal areas which have massive vacancies running up to 90%.

Police had got a tip-off that a youth, named Pintu Kumar Mehta, left Domchanch in Koderma for Padma to supply the explosive materials to the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) in Chatra and was to pass through Padma to Itkhori in Chatra. Though Police could seize the explosives and arrest one Manish Kumar Mehta, who was waiting there to take the delivery, Pintu could not be arrested. Further, on the basis of information provided by Manish, a fresh raid was conducted and police seized five-and-a-half quintals of ammonium nitrate kept in 11 bags from the house of one Neman Bhuiyan in Suji village close to Padma Police Station.

Bokaro Police on January 30 sent three persons to jail after they were arrested from Pachmo village near Jhumra hills for planting explosives which were triggered by the Maoists on January 20 injuring 11 Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) troopers, reports The Telegraph. The arrestees were identified as Loknath Mahto, a Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadre, Dhaneshwar Ravidas and Sohan Argaria. Mahto was arrested on January 29 from his house at Pachmo under Mahuatand Police Station area. Bokaro Superintendent of Police (SP) Kuldeep Dwivedi told that Loknath’s arrest was a big success as he had given vital information that would lead to more arrests. Maoist literature, wires and Police uniform were also recovered from the houses of the three arrestees.

An aide of Kundan Pahan, the South Chotanagpur ‘zonal commander’ of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist), was arrested by from Silli-Rahe locality in Ranchi District, reports The Times of India. The aide, identified as Pitambar Mahto alias Pritam alias Lambu, was helping him gain his ground by distributing posters and brainwashing villagers to join their ranks in Silli, Tamar, Bundu, Sonahatu and adjoining areas of rural Ranchi. A Made-in-Italy (though looking like a country made) pistol, some ammunition and 40kg can bomb were recovered by the Police. Earlier active in rural Ranchi, Pahan has now shifted his activities to Saraikela, Chaibasa, Simdega, Gumla, East Singhbhum and Khunti and hails from Badigarha village of Tamar.

The Maoists attacked the Police who went to the village in search of an extremist wanted for the November 9, 2012 attack on a Police van that freed some Maoists, Superintendent of Police (SP) A.V. Latehar Police on February 10 arrested a Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadre, Kuldeep Mahato, from Barwadih in Latehar District of Jharkhand, reports The Times of India. They recovered some live detonators and one improvised explosive device (IED) from his possession. "We were on long-range patrolling when we saw Mahato trying to flee from the jungles with the detonators and IED," said Latehar Superintendent of Police (SP) Kranti Kumar. Kuldeep was active in the organization for the last five years and was a member of Shankar Yadav platoon.

The four Maoists were identified as KCC 'chairman' Vishnu Cherwa, Mangal Surin, Dubi Guria and Birsa, all in their mid thirties. Of the four rebels, Cherwa was the first to be arrested on February 28 while the rest were arrested early on March 1. The Maoists were arrested in a joint search operation of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and District Police. According to Palamu Superintendent of Police (SP), Narendra Singh, Umesh is a ‘self-styled zonal committee member’ of the Koyal Sankh zone and ‘secretary’ of North Koyal sub-zone of the Maoists. Sathan Besra, aged between 30 and 35 years, is a resident of Domanpur village in Dumka District. “He was tasked to provide alerts about the movement of the SP’s convoy. He worked with zonal commander Navin Manjhi who was a terror in Hazaribag, Bokaro and Giridih districts. He was initially involved in more than two dozen Maoist cases which include killing cops, arms loot and burning vehicles used by both police and contractors for construction of roads and bridges.
