Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) ‘politburo’ member Misir Besra and his squad members managed to escape following an encounter with Security Forces (SFs) in West Singhbhum District of Jharkhand early on January 10 (today), reports The Tribune. Acting on a tip-off, Jharkhand Police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) launched a search operation during which Maoists opened fire on them, to which SFs retaliated, leading to a fierce gun-battle in a forest between Tumbahaka and Sarjamburu under Tonto Police Station area on January 9, Superintendent of Police (SP) Ajay Linda said. However, Besra and his squad made a hasty retreat into the thick forests, and no casualty had been reported on either side, SP, Linda said, adding that a combing operation is under way.

An encounter broke out between Security Forces (SFs) and cadres belonging to Dinesh Gope's armed squad of the People's Liberation Front of India (PLFI), a splinter group of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist), in the forests of Sidma-Temna hill area under Gudri Police Station limits in West Singhbhum District of Jharkhand on February 3 morning, reports ibc24.in. Superintendent of Police (SP) Ajay Linda said along with West Singhbhum and Khunti District Forces, the 194th Battalion of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) based in Khunti had jointly launched a search operation, and as soon as the Police team reached near Sidma hill, the banned PLFI cadres started firing, the SFs also gave a befitting reply after which the Naxalites [Left Wing Extremists, LWEs] fled towards the hill in the forest. Later, a search operation was carried out during which the Police team recovered bags, PLFI pamphlets, receipts and other daily use material from the encounter site.

Two troopers of the Commando Battalion for Resolute Action (CoBRA) Battalion were injured in an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) explosion triggered by the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres during a combing operation in Bulbul Forest in Lohardaga District of Jharkhand on February 11, reports tv9hindi.com. An encounter took place between the squad of Ravindra Ganjhu, the ‘regional commander’ of CPI-Maoist, carrying reward of 1.5 million, and the SFs on February 10. During the combing operation, an IED kept hidden in the forest exploded as soon as the soldiers kept their feet, in which both the CoBRA troopers identified as Dilip Kumar (29) and Narayan Das (38) were injured. Later on, the Maoists fled after seeing the Security Forces (SFs) overwhelmed. During the search operation, a huge quantity of detonators, medicines, Naxalite [Left Wing Extremist, LWE] pamphlets, and other items have been found from the camp and later on the camp was also destroyed.

Jharkhand Police arrested Badal Gope, an ‘area commander’ of People's Liberation Front of India (PLFI), a splinter group of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist), from Pipra Toli of Argora in Ranchi District of Jharkhand on February 13, reports livehindustan.com. Following information that PLFI cadres was hiding in some area of Argora, Narkopi and Bedo, the Police launched search operation and arrested Gope. It is being told that Badal also used to work for notorious criminal Aman Sau. But later he left the gang and joined PLFI. In other areas including Narkopi, Bedo, Latehar, Chatra and Gumla, he used to collect ‘levy’ (extortion money) from contractors and land traders. To spread panic, the ‘area commander’ used to move around with the weapon. According to Police, many weapons have also been recovered from Badal.

Three cadres of the Tritiya Sammelan Prastuti Committee (TSPC/TPC), a splinter group of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist), were arrested following an encounter between the Naxalites [Left Wing Extremists, LWEs] and Police during a search operation jointly carried out by the District Armed Police and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) in a forest near Turkun village in Palamu District of Jharkhand on March 1, reports prabhasakshi.com. Superintendent of Police (SP), Chandan Kumar Sinha told reporters that weapons were also recovered from the spot after the encounter. Bangles were also recovered from the spot which indicated that women cadre were also present there. The identities of the arrested LWEs are yet to be ascertained.

Three cadres of the Tritiya Prastuti Committee (TPC), a splinter group of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist), were shot dead by the Security Forces (SFs) at a forest area under Manika Police Station area in Latehar District of Jharkhand on March 26, reports India Today. Inspector General of Police (Operations) Amol V Homkar said, the Naxalites [Left Wing extremists, LWEs] were killed in a gunfight with the forces at a forest in Manika Police Station area, and some Naxalites managed to escape taking advantage of the dense forest. Five Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) fitted with arrows were seized during a search operation by Security Force (SF) personnel after Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) fired at the under-construction Bharnia Police camp in West Singhbhum District of Jharkhand on April 4, reports latestly.com. The B company of 157th battalion of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), who are stationed at the place, retaliated by hurling para bombs on April 3 night and none of its personnel was either injured or killed, a Police release said, adding SF personnel drawn from the District Armed Police (DAP), CRPF and Bomb Disposal Squad (BDS) of Jharkhand Jaguar (JJ) carried out the massive search operation in the Naxal [Left Wing Extremism, LWE]-affected areas and recovered three live arrow bombs and two used arrow bombs, besides some empty cartridges from the spot. All the three live explosives were defused by the BDS, the Police added.

Deputy Inspector General (DIG), Kolhan, Ajay Linda said, the incident occurred in the forest between Rengrahatu and Tumbahaka villages under the Tonto Police Station limits when a joint team of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), CoBRA, Jharkhand Jaguar (JJ) and District Armed Police (DAP) personnel was conducting the operation. Acting on a tip-off about the presence of top CPI-Maoist leader Misir Besra, who carries a bounty of INR 10 million on his head, and Patiram Manjhi alias Anal da along with their squad members in the forest areas, the operation was launched, West Singhbhum, Superintendent of Police (SP), Ashutosh Shekhar said, adding that Prabhakar Sahni, the injured inspector, was airlifted and admitted to a hospital in Ranchi.
