For the second time in less than a week, Pakistani troops opened unprovoked fire on an Indian border post at Tangdhar in northern Kashmir in a development which was described as "worrisome" by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Daily Excelsior reported. "It is worrisome," Singh said as the violation of the five-year-old cease-fire was taken up by the Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) through the hotline. "India’s concerns over the unprovoked firing were conveyed to his Pakistani counterpart," Defence Minister A. K. Antony said. The Prime Minister reportedly voiced concern over the firing while talking to reporters on the sidelines of the Defence investiture ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi. "We have taken up the matter at the level of DGMO," Singh said, adding that all issues having a bearing on the India-Pakistan relations would be taken up during the forthcoming Foreign Minister level talks between the two countries. Using heavy machine guns and mortars, Pakistani troops targeted a forward Indian post in the Tangdhar area raking it with 50 to 60 rounds on May 14-evening, Army sources said. These sources added that this was not a covering fire for any attempt to push in terrorists and it was targeted straight at the Indian post. "There was no casualty," an Army spokesman said adding that Indian Forces had exercised "extreme restraint" and had not opened retaliatory fire. This is the first major violation of the cease-fire by the Pakistani troops on Line of Control which has been in force since December 2003. In Islamabad, however, a Pakistani military spokesman denied that its troops had fired at the Indian post.

Violating the cease-fire along the Line of Control (LoC) in the Poonch sector, Pakistani troops on May 19 opened unprovoked heavy firing on a forward Indian post killing one trooper, according to Daily Excelsior. "Pakistani troops resorted to heavy and unprovoked firing on our forward posts in Dhip, Salhutri area of Mendhar in Poonch sector around 8 am today", official sources said. The firing, which continued for over 10 minutes, resulted in the death of a trooper, he said, adding that Indian troops later took up positions, but observed restraint. "They (Pak Army) have violated the cease-fire by resorting to heavy firing on our positions", sources said. They added that Pakistan Army fired at least 8-10 rockets and 12 bursts from heavy fire arms. This is the third cease-fire violation along the India-Pakistan border and second along the LoC in less than a fortnight. On May 9, Pakistan resorted to heavy firing and burst UBGL grenades while targeting a Border Security Force post and a patrol party along the International Border in the Samba sector, violating the truce which came into force on November 16, 2003 for the first time. On May 14, Pakistani troops again shelled Indian posts using 60 mm and 82 mm mortar shells in the Tangdhar division of Kupwara sector along the LoC in north Kashmir.

Violating the four-year-old cease-fire, Pakistani troops fired twice in a day at a forward Indian post of Doba in the Sawjian area of Poonch district injuring two Border Security Force (BSF) soldiers on July 21, Tribune reported. Out of the two, BSF head constable Bhanwar Singh is reported to have later died. According to intelligence sources, firing occurred on July 21-morning and evening and both the times, the Pakistani troops tried to give cover to militants, who made attempts to infiltrate into India through the Doba post manned by the 192 Battalion of the BSF. In the morning firing, though BSF soldier Ganga Dhar sustained injuries, the BSF foiled the infiltration bid. In the evening incident, Bhanwar Singh sustained serious injuries and later died at the Army hospital in Poonch.

At least one soldier was killed in a gun-battle on July 28 as Defence authorities claimed that Pakistani troops violated the November 2003 cease-fire between India and Pakistan with crossing over to the Indian side on the Line of Control (LoC). Defence spokesman, Colonel A. K. Mathur, told Daily Excelsior that the Indian Army noticed movement of a group of 10 to 12 Pakistani soldiers at Kayian Bal in Leepa Valley at 1530 hours (IST). According to him, Pakistani soldiers crossed the LoC and opened fire when they were challenged to halt. He said that one Indian soldier, identified as Mahesh, was killed. He said that the Indian troops retaliated and forced the Pakistani soldiers to retreat. "Fierce gunbattle is going on as troops from both sides are using light combat weapons", Col. Mathur said. He did not confirm wire service and television channel reports that four of the retreating Pakistani soldiers had been killed. Col Mathur said it was for the first time since the November 2003 truce that the Pakistani troops had violated the cease-fire.
