In a post on his twitter account, former Maldivian President Mohamed Nasheed defended his decision to urge India for Military-supported envoy to restore the political stability in the Maldives because ‘handling the crisis internally’ could lead to chaos, reports Raajje. Mohamed Nasheed—an opposition leader, humbly ‘requested’ Indian and the United States (US) Governments that political figures are released and Government finances are in crisis. India must send envoy supported by its Military, to release Judges and Political detainees and US must halt all financial transactions to current Maldivian regime leaders, read a tweet post by Mohamed Nasheed on his twitter account.

Indian Government, on February 9, appealed all nations to come together and play a ‘constructive’ role in the Maldives which further resolved the raging political crisis in the Indian Ocean Islands, report Hindustan Times. India has noted China’s reaction in which the latter has said about the Maldivian Government’s ability to protect the security of Chinese personnel and institutions based in the Maldives, read a statement issued by India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). The Maldives had ‘jumped’ into the political crisis with its President Abdulla Yameen’s decision of state of emergency and arrests of its Chief Justice of the Supreme Court and former President of the Maldives, Mohamed Nasheed.

Aalif Rauf—an alleged kidnapper of a Maldivian journalist and one of three people charged with terrorism had been awarded an expensive flat worth MVR 2 million (USD 128, 205) under the Maldivian Government’s Housing Scheme, reports Maldives Independent on February 11. A list of applicants approved by Maldives’ Housing Minister Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, was leaked on February 5, enlisted Rauf under the allotment of a flat in Male Grand flat in Old Arabiyya compound in the city. “What must happen now is an independent inquiry that people can trust in. And if there were any wrongs had been done, it must be reversed, and action must be taken against those who did it. The problem is that there is no independent institution in Maldives that people can trust,” said former Housing Minister Mohamed Aslam.

The President of Maldives Abdullah Yameen Abdul Gayoom on February 14 claimed that the Supreme Court of Maldives is responsible for multiple violent breakouts in the nation, reports Avas Online. On February 1, the Supreme Court of Maldives had ordered the immediate release of nine political prisoners including the former Maldivian President Mohamed Nasheed and also cancelled the nation’s Anti-Defection law, which results to the opposition party’s sudden gain in the parliament majority. Certainly the supporters of the present Maldivian Government would have not stay silent if we [Maldivian Government] had moved forward and released all those criminals [political figures]. They would have people coming out to the streets and so would we. Where does that end? It would have ended with violence and riots. It could have eventually led to bloodshed and gruesome endings," said President Yameen while addressing his party members at the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) camp.

Expressing its ‘deep’ disappointment over Maldives’ extended State of Emergency (SoE) for another 30 days, India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on February 21 released a statement stating the ‘move unconstitutional’, reports The Hindu. The way in which the SoE was approved by the Majlis (Parliament of Maldives) was a contravention of the Constitution of Maldives and it is a matter of concern, read the statement. The MEA’s interpretation is incorrect as the Maldivian President Abdulla Yameen declared the SoE and the Majlis extended it. To verify any issues with the approval of SoE, the matter will be forward to the Maldives’ Supreme Court, said Maldives’ Ambassador to India Mohamed Ahmed. Later on February 21, the Maldives’ Supreme Court cleared the validity of the SoE.

Following the expression of disappointment over the 30 days extension of State of Emergency (SoE) in the Maldives, India on February 22 urged to release all political prisoners, reports Maldives Times. Over the situation, India does not see any ‘valid reason’ for the extension of SoE, therefore India urged the Maldivian Government to ‘free’ political prisoners including the Chief Justice, and implement the judicial decision of Maldives’ Supreme Court which further reinstate the normal functioning of the institutions of democracy, said an unnamed Spokesperson of India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).

The Maldives’ President Abdulla Yameen on February 22 claimed that the public statements issued by the Government of India over the ongoing political crisis in the Maldives, are based on ignored facts and ground realities, reports The Hindu. The President’s reaction came after a day of India’s expression of disappointment over the extension of State of Emergency (SoE) in the Maldives. Maldives’ Jumhooree Party (JP) leader Qasim Ibrahim claimed that the European Union (EU) is likely to impose sanctions on the Maldives as the members of EU Parliament hinted the same to him, reports Rajje on February 24. Many countries, including EU member countries, had issued travel advisories on the Maldives due to the political crisis. Noting that countries such as China and the United Kingdom (UK) have done so, it is likely that EU would impose sanctions that would result in the Maldives’ economy suffering enormously, said Qasim Ibrahim.

Responding to the European Union’s (EU) urged to end the State of Emergency (SoE) in the Maldives, the Maldivian Government on February 26 assured that SoE would end as soon the threats to National Security are nullified, reports Avas Online. The Foreign Affairs Council (FAC) of the EU on February 26 adopted a series of conclusions on the Maldives situation, in light of the recent deterioration of the situation in the island nation. As expected, the FAC adopted a seven point conclusion which included a call to Maldivian Government to immediately end the SoE and restoration of all Constitution Rights. "The Government of Maldives appreciates the EU for standing with the Maldives during this difficult period and calls to help facilitate the ongoing efforts to resolve the current Constitutional Crisis, and to return to normalcy,” read a statement released by the Maldives’ Foreign Ministry.

The Maldives Embassy in India has released a statement that the Maldives had declined to join the Military exercise ‘Milan’ invitation from India because of the ongoing political crisis and the State of Emergency (SoE) in the Maldives and not because of any ‘hidden’ tension between two nations [India and Maldives], reports Mihaaru on March 1. Due to the SoE, all Security personnel were required at heightened level of readiness to dealt with any situation. As a part of procedure, during the practises of SoE like situations, the Armed officers called-off from Military exercises conducted overseas, and there was nothing ‘special’ in the decision regarding joining the ‘Milan’. India and Maldives share a long history of excellent Defence and Military cooperation and will continue the same indefinitely, read a statement released by the Maldives Embassy in India.

The Maldives Ambassador to China—Mohamed Faisal on March 22 has said that India is like a brother but China is Maldives’ long-lost cousin found and the Maldives would accelerate the Chinese projects despite of India’s concerns, reports The Tribune. The Maldives has taken many key projects to India but did not received the necessary finance, whereas China who is a major participant in 21st Century Maritime Silk Road plan in the Indian Ocean, has made huge investments in the Maldives, a nation of 26 tropical atolls and 1,000 small Islands, said Ambassador Faisal.

The Maldives President Abdulla Yameen on April 25 compared the landmark ruling of the Supreme Court of the Maldives on February 1, with an attempted Coup of November 3, 1988 and declared that two incidents had taught similar lessons, reports Mihaaru. In November 1988, two [unnamed] conspirators had paid Sri Lanka-based militant outfit, the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), to assist in overthrowing the Maldivian government. The Supreme Court’s ruling of February 1, 2018 to release the political prisoners was a similar ‘conspiracy’. The Maldivians who sold country’s sovereignty and honour for a million or two million Dollars on February 1 , were the ones that must have been the most trustworthy, said Yameen referring to Judges Saeed and Hameed of the Supreme Court of the Maldives.

The amendment was brought forth for a very important reason and that is there are some who has expressed interest in quickly becoming the President of the Maldives right after coming to the country after a long time abroad and they cannot even properly speak in Dhivehi (the official language of the Maldives). This should only include self-exiles who move abroad and then return for a Presidency but those who migrate abroad, defame the country and hold multiple passports from different countries, said MP Nihan.

Expressing the disappointment over the Political developments in the neighbouring country—the Maldives, India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on June 28 released a statement that the Political scenario in the Maldives is the matter of concern for India, reports The Indian Express. However, India welcomed the lifting of the State of Emergency (SoE) and has also called upon the Maldives government to ensure early resumption of the political process. It also urged the Maldivian government to allow the democratic institutions, including the judiciary, to function in a fair and transparent manner. The Maldivian government on June 28 has appointed Ahmed Abdulla Didi as the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the Maldives. The Supreme Court has sentenced the former President Maumoon Andul Gayoom and former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court—Abdulla Saeed to 19 months of imprisonment. The trials were widely criticised—internationally too, were being observed as part of President Abdulla Yameen’s plan to extend his term and strengthen his supremacy, as Maldives heads towards general elections in September this year. Therefore, it is with deep dismay that we [India] learned that the former President of the Maldives, as well as the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, are being sentenced to long prison terms without fair trial, read the statement released by the MEA.
