Two police personnel also died during the clash. The incident occurred after the insurgents opened fire at the SFs, which reached the site to remove barricades set up by the former on the highway.

Quoting a statement released by the Royal Nepalese Army (RNA) on March 1, Nepal News has reported that troops have recovered nearly 50 dead bodies of Maoist insurgents after a counter insurgency operation in the Ganeshpur village of mid-western Bardiya district. Four security force (SF) personnel were killed and 17 others were injured in the incident. SFs recovered two light machine guns, two M-16 rifles, one INSAS rifle, nine SLR rifles and nine .303 rifles used by the Maoists.

At least 10 persons - six Maoist insurgents, two security force (SF) personnel and two civilians - were killed in separate incidents across the country. Three Maoists and two SF personnel were killed and two others injured during a clash at Likhuphalate in the Gaighat district on April 1. On the same day, a Maoist, Mangal Singha Ghalan, was shot dead by the troops during a search operation in the Paurahi area of Rautahat district and an unidentified insurgent was killed at Bhagawanpur in Kapilvastu district. In a separate incident in Dhankuta district, insurgents shot dead a former Indian Army personnel, Ram Lal Moktan, at Chungmang on April 1. SFs also recovered the dead body of a Maoist from the clash site at Chhuplu area in Solukhumbu district on March 31.

The Royal Nepalese Army (RNA) has reportedly claimed that the troops repulsed a major Maoist attack at a security base at Khara in the Rukum district killing at least 50 insurgents on April 7-night. A statement released by the RNA’s Department of Public Relations said thousands of insurgents attacked the base on April 7-evening and the fighting continued till the next day. It also said the RNA had recovered bodies of 50 insurgents and 31 guns from the incident site. While the RNA did not disclose fatalities on the troops’ side, it quoted eyewitnesses as saying that the number of slain Maoists could be much higher. This is reportedly the first major offensive attempted by the insurgents against the RNA after the February 1 royal takeover.
