Meanwhile, about 16 personnel of the paramilitary Frontier Corps went missing on Jandola-Sara Rogha road in South Waziristan on August 9, The News reported. They are believed to have been abducted by militants. Reports indicated that Uzbek militants, who were evicted from Wana, headquarters of South Waziristan, and its surrounding towns as a result of a tribal force led by ‘Commander’ Nazeer and his associates, had shifted to the Mehsud-dominated area and might be behind the abduction. However, army spokesperson Maj. Gen. Arshad said "Nobody has made any claim for their kidnapping."

Pro-Taliban militants beheaded one of 16 paramilitary soldiers abducted on August 9 in South Waziristan, and threatened to kill more unless 10 of their associates are freed, according to Daily Times. Residents found the body and severed head near a football ground in Jandola, 50 kilometres east of South Waziristan’s main town of Wana, on August 14, said Latifur Rehman, a senior government official. A note found near the body said others would meet a similar fate if the militants’ demands were not met. The militants, believed to be from the local Mehsud tribe, said they would swap the soldiers for their 10 detained colleagues, three of whom are held on charges of plotting bomb blasts and suicide attacks, AFP reported. The abductors have not given any deadline.

Local Taliban militants have agreed to unconditionally release 15 paramilitary personnel who were abducted from Spinkai Raghzai in South Waziristan 10 days ago, a tribal negotiator claimed on August 19, according to Dawn. Member of National Assembly, Maulana Mirajuddin, chief of a 21-member jirga (council), said that the local Taliban had assured them that the 15 Frontier Corps (FC) personnel would be freed. He said the soldiers would be freed in phases and the first batch was likely to be handed over to the jirga in three days. The militants had kidnapped 16 FC personnel from the area dominated by the Mehsud tribe on August 9 and one them was later found dead. No group had claimed responsibility for the abduction. Mirajuddin informed that talks between the jirga and the militants had been successful and the jirga had been assured of FC personnel’s unconditional release. Officials said that the jirga had persuaded militants to vacate their positions on hilltops and subsequently the Wana-Tank Road was reopened.

On August 28, militants freed 18 Frontier Corps (FC) personnel, including a senior officer, and a political agent in the Sam area of South Waziristan after an assurance from the government that it would abide by the February 2005 peace agreement, according to Dawn. 16 FC personnel had been abducted on August 9. Later, one soldier was killed, and a video was released showing a teenage boy beheading him. On August 24, Commandant of the Bajaur Scouts, Lt-Col Shahid Kiani, his three guards and a political agent were abducted. Chief negotiator Maulana Mirajuddin, a Member of the National Assembly, informed that all hostages had been released unconditionally. He, however, said the militants wanted the government to respect the February 2005 peace accord. Officials said that Noor Syed, a close associate of militant commander Baitullah Mehsud, handed over the captives to a 35-member Jirga (council) in the Sam area on August 28-morning.

Militants in South Waziristan are reported to have abducted around 150 Pakistan Army personnel and shifted them to their hideouts in the mountains on August 30, The News reported. They laid siege to two Pakistan Army convoys which were on their way from Wana and Shakai to Ladha subdivision. When the convoys reached Shawangi Narray, 40 kilometres north of Wana, South Waziristan’s regional headquarters, the militants accused them of violating the Sara Rogha peace accord, signed between the government and Taliban on February 9, 2005, under which, according to tribal militants, security forces were have to withdraw from the areas inhabited by the Mehsud tribesmen. Both the convoys comprised 16 vehicles in which around 150 soldiers were travelling. However, military spokesperson Major General Waheed Arshad said "Sometimes soldiers cannot reach their destination in time due to either bad weather or other reasons… We hope they will return to their camp tomorrow morning, there is no suggestion of kidnapping or fighting."

Local Taliban militants shot dead six alleged criminals to avenge the death of their four associates in the Pandialai tehsil (administrative division) of Mohmand Agency in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) on October 11, reports Dawn. They also abducted six other ‘criminals’. Locals told Dawn that the militants attacked a hideout of Yousaf Khan, an alleged anti-social element, in the Dwezai village of Pandialai during their ‘anti-vice campaign’. Four local Taliban militants were killed when the ‘criminals’ fired back. Eyewitnesses said that after the exchange of fire, hundreds of Taliban supporters surrounded the house of Yousaf Khan, who had by that time left the place along with his family, and set it ablaze. Residents said that the Taliban later traced down the fleeing ‘criminals’ in the Kasorai mountains of Tamanzo area killing six of them while abducting six others. During the past one month, militants have killed at least eight persons in their drive against ‘crimes’ in the agency. Two of them were reportedly beheaded.

The gang leader opened fire, killing four of the militants. However, they later killed him and five of his family members, set ablaze his house and seized another six of his followers. "The militants on Friday publicly beheaded all six of them while holding funeral prayers for their own colleagues," Khan added.
