Four civilians were killed and two police personnel were wounded in a bomb blast that targeted a police vehicle in the Swat district of North West Frontier Province (NWFP) on July 4, according to Daily Times. Police officer Saeed Khan said that it was not clear whether a grenade was thrown at the vehicle or whether a roadside bomb exploded. A number of eyewitnesses claimed that a suicide bomber carried out the attack using an improvised explosive device (IED) near the Kanju Bridge. However, police officials did not confirm the suicide attack but said it cannot be ruled out.

According to Daily Times, four Pakistan Army personnel, including a Major and a Lieutenant, were killed on July 6 in an improvised explosive device (IED) attack on a military convoy in the Dir district of North West Frontier Province (NWFP). "Four soldiers have been martyred in an IED explosion," said ISPR Director-General, Major General Waheed Arshad. He, however, denied that the attack was a reaction to the standoff with the Lal Masjid brigade in Islamabad. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack. According to the locals, the outlawed Tehreek-e-Nafaz-e-Shariat-e-Mohammadi (TNSM) could be "behind the blast." Dir is a stronghold of the Jamaat-e-Islami and the outlawed TNSM. The attack is the second such in as many days and comes after cleric Fazlullah in Swat gave a call to his supporters for "jihad" on his illegal FM radio channel following the action against Lal Masjid. Agency reports added that Police said the suicide bomber, who was riding a bicycle, killed four security officials.

Four persons were killed and another sustained injuries when militants ambushed their vehicle in the Arkot area of Swat district of North West Frontier Province (NWFP) on October 13, Dawn reported. Local people said a businessman, Afzal Gujar, was injured, while his two brothers — Ayub Khan and Ahsanullah — and Shahzaman and Akber Bacha were killed. The whereabouts of Afzal are yet to be ascertained. Last month, a bomb had exploded outside the businessman’s home and following the blast, Afzal is reported to have kept in confinement a brother of a local militant and released him after intervention by local elders. Officials believe that the killings might be linked to the enmity between Afzal and militants.

Militants on October 26 publicly executed four security force personnel in a village, 16-km west of Mingora, the headquarters of Swat district in the North West Frontier Province (NWFP), and exchanged heavy gunfire with security forces in a nearby sub-district, according to Dawn. Masked militants armed with rocket-propelled grenades and assault rifles brought the four men to the village at around 5pm, fired a few shots in the air and later beheaded them. "Let this serves as a warning to all those who spy for the government or help the government. All sons of Bush will meet similar fate," a resident quoted one of the militants announcing shortly before the execution. People in Shakkardarra said that militants of Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM), who had set up check-posts on the main road and took positions on hills, seized the four men during the checking of vehicles. No group has so far claimed responsibility for the execution, but Maulana Naddar, a lieutenant of TNSM leader Maulana Fazlullah, said in a broadcast on an FM radio that the men had been executed to avenge the death of three militants killed early in the day.

The NWFP Home Secretary, Badshah Gul Wazir, put the number of casualties at 60-70, all militants, while the Taliban spokesman claimed that only one of their colleagues and seven civilians, including two women, were killed. There were, however, some independent reports of the killing of 56 people, including 41 militants and 11 SF personnel, and injuries to some 26 persons. According to some reports, a Frontier Corps (FC) camp also came under the Taliban siege, which the Home Secretary rejected. Military spokesperson Major General Waheed Arshad said that the latest round of fighting began at 4:30 am when the militants attacked a check-post and the troops responded with mortar and small arms fire. He informed: "It is going on and helicopters are still engaged by law enforcing agencies… According to the information I have from the police and Frontier Constabulary, between 60 to 70 miscreants were killed in Swat's areas of Khwazakhela today." Locals of Khwazakhela, the main point of fighting on November 1, said that the military helicopters started strikes at 4 am, leading to an exodus of the local populace for safer places in the upper parts of the district – Madyan, Bahrain, Miandam and other places. Mortar shells were fired at the Taliban's alleged hideouts at Baryam, Salandai, Imam Dherai, Koza Bandai from the FC camp near Mingora, airport and other areas.

30 more people, including 20 militants and four civilians, were killed and more than 70 others, including 50 civilians, injured as security forces continued bombing suspected militants’ hideouts in the Shangla and Swat districts of the North West Frontier Province (NWFP) on the third consecutive day on November 15, according to The News. Military spokesperson Major General Waheed Arshad confirmed that 20 militants were killed - 12 of them in Shangla and eight in Swat. He said several militants were injured and their bunkers destroyed in the daylong shelling by the gunship helicopters and artillery in both the districts. The spokesman termed as baseless the militants’ claim that 60 soldiers were killed in Shangla in two days of fighting. Further, Gen Waheed admitted to have received some reports about civilian casualties in the Shangla district, but did not provide any details. “For the first time the troops have started operation to clear the Bisham-Shangla road and attacked a critical gorge about 5km from Alpuri. We have reports of the killing of 12 militants in that action,” Gen Arshad told Dawn. He claimed that the militants had abandoned Alpuri and fled to the mountains near Mingora.
