Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Chief Minister Ameer Haider Khan Hoti narrowly escaped a suicide attack on his motorcade at Mardan College Chowk in Mardan Town of same District on February 15, reports Dawn. Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Khalid Khan said that a suicide bomber aged about 23 years attacked the motorcade on the busy Mardan College Chowk when it was on its way to Mardan-i-Khas locality where Mr Hoti was to address a public meeting. The legs and hands of the bomber had been found at the site of the blast and a head outside a nearby building, DSP Khalid Khan added. The Chief Minister appeared to be the target of the bomber but because of strict security measures he could not reach the venue of the public meeting. He said only the bomber, and no-one else, was hurt, he added further.

After two attacks on election candidates in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) and assassination of a contestant in Hyderabad, Sindh, contenders would now be allowed to keep five civilian bodyguards with licensed arms during the polls campaign, The News reported on April 13. “Under instructions from the Election Commission of Pakistan, politicians can keep five civilians with licensed arms as guards. They need to be verified from the police first,” the AIG Police, Operations, KP, Masood Khan Afridi, told The News. he Police in KP which is more prone to militant attacks have done categorisation of polling stations in all the Districts where deployment would be made as per the sensitive situation in the area, the source disclosed. The KP Police has forwarded its suggestions and demands to the Government for ensuring peaceful elections in the province, the source said. It added that the KP Police have suggested deployment of Quick Response Force to ensure peaceful polls.

The Awami National Party (ANP) candidates Rehmanullah and his son Ameer Rehman survived attempt on life while a party worker was injured in a grenade attack on them at Shewa graveyard in Sheikh Jana area of Swabi District. Mr Rehmanullah, who is also ANP’s District President, is contesting election from NA-12, Swabi-1 and Mr Ameer from PK-31, Swabi-1 on the ANP tickets. Mr Rehmanullah said that unidentified assailants hurled two grenades on them at Shewa graveyard. “One grenade exploded, but we survived,” he said. However, a party worker Shamal Khan was injured.Further, four persons, who hired a taxi for Peshawar, were abducted and their vehicle found abandoned near Lado Ustarzai in Kohat District. The victims included Amir, Mirza, Imran and Sattar, all residents of Mosam Khan Banda.

The bomb planted near Mukarram Shah's car exploded in the village of Banjot, said Abdullah Khan, Police Chief of the City of Mingora where the village is located. A village defence committee member and local Awami National Party leader, Mukarram Shah, was killed in a remote-controlled roadside blast in the Manglawar area of Swat District in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on April 14, reports Daily Times. Mukarram Shah was on his way when his vehicle was hit by the roadside bomb in the Manglawar area, said Malakand Division Police Chief Abdullah Khan. He said the vehicle of Shah was completely destroyed in the explosion, resulting in his death on the spot. Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) claimed the responsibility for the attack. In telephone calls to media offices, TTP ‘spokesman’ Ehsanullah Ehsan said his men had carried out the attack. He gave no reason for this killing.

16 persons were killed and more than 35 were injured when a suicide bomber targeted the senior Awami National Party (ANP) leader Ghulam Ahmad Bilour and his nephew Haroon Bilour in Mundabheri area of Yakatut in Peshawar (Peshawar District), the provincial capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, in the evening of April 16, reports The News. Ghulam Ahmad Bilour (75) is contesting from the NA-1, Peshawar. He received minor injuries in the blast. Haroon Bilour, the son of late Bashir Bilour who was killed in a suicide bombing on December 22, 2012, was unhurt in the explosion. He is a candidate from PK-3. Senior police officers confirmed that the blast was carried out by a suicide bomber whose target was Ghulam Ahmad Bilour. “It was a suicide attack and five to six kilogrammes of explosives were used in it,” Assistant Inspector General (AIG) of Bomb Disposal Unit (BDU), Shafqat Malik said. The Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) claimed responsibility for the attack, but apologised for injuring Bilour, saying it had been targeting his nephew, Haroon. “We apologies to Ghulam Bilour because we announced an amnesty for him,” said TTP ‘spokesman’ Ehsanullah Ehsan.

At least two persons, including a minor, sustained injuries when an Improvised Explosive Devise (IED) planted by militants went off near the vehicle of the Awami National Party (ANP) local leader Farooq Khan in Shadheri area of Charsadda District on April 17, reports The News. The sources said Farooq Khan, senior vice-president of the ANP in PK-17 and a member of the election committee, constituted to lead the election campaign of the party ‘chief’ Asfandyar Wali Khan for NA-7, was the apparent target. However, he survived the attack and a passerby minor, Haroon Shah, and Ibrahim, driver of Farooq Khan, sustained injuries in the incident, the sources said.
