A suicide bomber blew up a car laden with explosives at a checkpoint close to the Hangu Police Station and Hangu District Police Officer (DPO) Office in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on May 26 evening, killing 32 persons and injuring 60 others, reports Daily Times. A double-cabin pickup packed with explosives was detonated at a barrier outside the Hangu Police Station on Hangu-Thall Road, creating a 10-foot long and foot-deep crater, said a Senior Police Official. Regional Police spokesman Fazal Naeem feared most of those killed were policemen, and predicted that the toll would rise, because there were offices and residences of senior police and administration officials near the attack site. Kohat division Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Masood Khan Afridi said that “the bomber blew up the car at a checkpost near the Hangu Police Station”. He said 400 to 450 kilogrammes of explosive material was used in the attack. “The destruction due to the blast is beyond imagination,” he added. “The buildings housing the Police Station, DPO office and nearby residence of the DPO were partially damaged but at least 15 shops, including a tea house and a restaurant, are completely razed,” the DIG said, adding, “The death toll has now risen to 32.”
