The Police and Security Forces (SFs) in a joint search and strike operation arrested 434 suspects and 115 unregistered Afghan nationals from different parts of the Province, especially Peshawar, on January 16 and 17, reported Dawn. The SFs also seized a large quantity of arms and ammunition from their possession. A Police official of Tehkal Police Station said the operation was carried out by the Police and SFs around the Bacha Khan Airport and that all Police Stations of the city were told to carry our such operations in their respective areas. He said the operation lasted several hours during which the Police and SFs cordoned off the areas and closed roads and pathways at their entry and exit points. According to spokesman for the Police Riaz Ahmad, a total of 434 suspicious people were arrested in the Province during the last two days. He added that 189 weapons, 5,516 rounds, and a large quantity of ammunition was also recovered. Further, the Police and SFs also forcibly shut down several private hostels in different areas of Peshawar. The action led the students living there blocked the University Road and thus, causing traffic jam for around an hour. Shouting slogans against the Government, the protesters said they didn’t know why their hostels had been closed and that evicting them without prior notice was an injustice. They said they were members of poor families by and large and couldn’t afford to stay in expensive hotels. “We were in mosques to offer Friday prayer when the police showed up and closed their hostels,” a protester said. An official of the Town police station said nine hostels had been closed for illegal operations. The protesters later cleared the road after the police assured them that they would resolve the problem by holding talks with the administrators of hostels.

A militant was killed and another two were arrested in a clash with the Police during a search operation in Malikabad area under Topi Police Station in Swabi District of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) on January 21, reports The News. The slain militant was identified as Abu Saeed, a resident of Malikabad. He was wanted by the Police in a number of terrorism-related cases. The press release said the slain militant was involved in the killings of Dr Yar Muhammad, retired head constable Mir Ghani, retired Army soldier Khan Afzal and the indiscriminate fire on a Police van. The Police recovered a Kalashnikov rifle and hand-grenades from the possession of Abu Saeed. The arrested militants were identified as Maqsood and Farooq, residents of Malikabad. Two pistols, 20 cartridges and an improved explosive device weighing 2.5 kilogram were also recovered from the two militants.

Law enforcement agencies on January 24 arrested seven Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) militants, including a ‘commander’, from different places, reports Daily Times. On a tip-off the Security Forces (SFs) raided a house located in Bagatoo area of Hangu District in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province arresting four terrorists of the banned TTP. Heavy weapons including eight hand grenades, four Kalashnikovs, two remote-controlled bombs, eight detonators, two batteries and hundreds of bullets were recovered from the possession of the arrested militants. In another incident, on intelligence report about the presence of TTP militants in the area the SFs conducted a raid in Harnai District of Balochistan Province and arrested three TTP militants, including a ‘commander’. SFs also recovered arms and ammunition from the possession of militants.

One militant was killed and three others were arrested by the Security Forces (SFs) during a search operation in Katlang tehsil (revenue unit) and its adjoining villages in Mardan District in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) on January 26, reports The News. A soldier was also injured in the exchange of fire with the militants in Matta village in Katlang. Meanwhile, the KP Police, in the ongoing search and strike operation throughout the province against criminals and anti-social elements, have rounded 246 suspects and recovered huge quantity of arms and ammunition, reports Daily Times. The number of arrests and recovery of weapons were made during the last two days of the operation, according to a statement from Police spokesman. “Around 79 arms and ammunition of different kind and 1,132 rounds of different bore were recovered during the search operation,” the statement added. The statement further said that during the operation 873 houses and 499 hotels were checked and 38 cases were registered against the violators. During the snap checking on 275 checkpoints, 285 suspects were held and 10 arms of different kind and 130 cartridges of different bore were recovered. During action against “illegal” Afghans a total of 192 persons were detained and 66 cases were registered against them.

Suicide jackets and explosives were also recovered from the possession of arrested militants. During the preliminary questioning, the militants confirmed that they had formed two separate groups to carry out suicide attacks at the main gates of the Punjab Regimental Centre and Police Station Saddar in Mardan.

Police on February 10 arrested 50 suspects during a search operation after threats were hurled by a banned militant outfit at the Police Training College in Hangu District, reported The News. District Police Officer (DPO) Anwar Saeed Kundi said that a militant organisation had threatened to target the Police Training College, adding that a search operation was launched in Guli Bagh, Lakhti Bandai, Qazi Pump, Umarabad, Kurramy Walo Killay, Ibrahimzai and Shahu area in the District. Meanwhile, accoding to Intelligence sources, of the total 294 Afghan prayer leaders, who are to be expelled from all over Khyber Pakhtunkhwa within a week, up to 153 alone have been identified in Peshawar, reported The News. Intelligence agencies identified the Afghan prayer leaders last month. Their names have been sent to the commissioners and Regional Police Officers (RPOs) concerned to expel them within a week. The report also identified those who have acquired Pakistani Computerised National Identity Cards (CNICs). According to the list, 16 Afghan prayer leaders have been identified in Peshawar city, 40 each in town and rural, 31 in cantonment and 26 on Warsak Road.The areas that were reported clear in the provincial capital included Civil Secretariat, University campus and Hayatabad, where not a single Afghan prayer leader is staying. The CTD personnel raided various areas in Swat and arrested 93 suspects, according to CTD spokesperson. According to CTD officials, Ibrahim killed polio worker Amina in Shagai Hindkyan village on December 18, 2012. The Peshawar Police on December 15 claimed to have foiled a plan to bomb a school on the first anniversary of the Army Public School (APS) massacre by arresting five suspected terrorists and seizing a 40kg explosive device, reports Dawn. City Police’s chief Mubarak Zeb told a news conference at the Malik Saad Shaheed police lines that arrests were made in light of investigation into the reported gas cylinder blast in a mosque in the limits of the Mathara Police Station two days ago. He said the investigators had found out that an improvised explosive device had exploded and not a gas cylinder. The Police chief said the Police later arrested the mosque’s prayer leader, Qari Kashif, a resident of Ghilachi area in Mathara. He said the prayer leader told investigators that he and his accomplices living in the area had planned to bomb a Warsak Road school on the first anniversary of the APS attack. Mr Zeb said on the pointation of the prayer leader, the police raided a house and arrested his accomplices, including Azizul Haq, Aftab, Sher Bahadar and Mohammad Alam, all residents of Mathara.
