The Jamaat-e-Islami chief Qazi Hussain Ahmad was addressing the rally which was organised in protest against the Bajaur Agency's by-elections at the Shobra Chowk when the blasts occurred in quick succession, according to Dawn. Eyewitnesses said three people were injured in the first blast and seven in the subsequent stampede. Gas leaking from the manhole caused the explosions, said police while ruling out any terrorist activity. However, the Jamaat-e-Islami has put the blame on the government and intelligent agencies.

Unidentified insurgents blew up an electricity tower in Mohmand Agency in the North West Frontier Province (NWFP) on March 22, Daily Times reported. Political administration officials said that the saboteurs destroyed an electricity tower near Pir Qilla, suspending power supply to Ghalanai and Lakrao grid stations. Unidentified miscreants had sabotaged some towers in November 2006. The government included some areas of the agency in Peshawar and Charsadda districts about eight years ago and the residents of these areas have been protesting against this move since then. The move also led to the formation of a Mohmand Resistance Movement (MRM), which has given a wheel-jam and shutter down strike call on March 29 to protest against the inclusion of tribal areas into settled ones. The MRM has been blamed for previous sabotages of electricity towers and Government officials have accused the organisation for this recent subversive activity. However, the MRM has denied involvement in this incident, saying that the administration was making false allegations against the organisation to foil its March 26 strike. The MRM demanded that 25 villages, which were part of the agency and later included in the settles areas, be re-included in the agency.

Police said the first incident took place on the Wana road when a group of suspected militants entered a private high school and forced the administration to let them deliver a jihadi sermon to the students and recruit them for holy war. After the sermon, they told the principal of the Oxford Public High School that they would enlist students for jihad and take them for training the same day, but he tried to stop them. Meanwhile, a Police party arrived at the place and the militants hurled a hand grenade, killing SHO Hassan Khan, and critically wounding a constable. Police opened fire on the assailants, killing one of them and injuring two others. One of the wounded attackers later died.

The Police official said a dynamite was detonated in an open field near the ICRC’s office, which was bombed on February 10. AFP reported that an explosive device had been hidden in a milkman’s can and planted near the ICRC facility in Peshawar. The ICRC said the explosion took place close to its car workshop at around 4:20 am. "There were no injuries or loss of life, nor was there any material damage," it said.

Two employees of the Barani Area Development Project (BADP) of the North West Frontier Province (NWFP) government were wounded during a bomb blast at their office in Kohistan on April 28, according to Dawn. Local clerics had reportedly delivered sermons during Friday prayers urging “the faithful” to attack offices of NGOs who inducted women staff for their project activities in the remote district. The clerics asked the people to restrict the entry of female staff of NGOs into their houses, saying these women were urging local women to go for family planning against their husbands’ will, which was a sin. “Attack the offices and workers of such NGOs who brought such women to our areas to spread obscenity,” the clerics were quoted as having said in the sermons. Sources added that two partner NGOs of the BADP had inducted four female employees for their health and education projects but the local clerics objected to this and asked them to expel the women.

According to witnesses, a rocket fired by the militants landed in the Rizwan Grain market of the city on Tank-Dera road, killing five civilians, including two brothers. Clashes in different parts of the city occurred for more than two hours and both sides used rockets and light cannons, causing collateral damage to bazaars and residential areas, residents said. Some unidentified people reportedly lobbed hand-grenades at district courts where SFs had set up checkpoints. The attack, however, did not hurt anyone. Later, the militants, armed with rockets and heavy machine-guns, moved into the town and started targeting the SFs. "The number of attackers was about 40 who challenged the security forces and went back to their area," an eye-witness said. People alleged that SFs fired on civilians instead of targeting militants who were seen roaming freely in the city.

According to Dawn, Taliban militants captured Chargano village at Darra Adamkhel in the North West Frontier Province (NWFP) on August 8 when rival tribesmen surrendered to them after clashes which left five people dead and at least 10 others injured. Witnesses said that some 20 families of the Qasimkhel tribe surrendered themselves to the militants after 35-hour-long gun fight between the two sides. Both sides targeted each other’s positions with rockets and heavy machine-guns. After capturing the village, the Taliban militants were seen looting houses of tribesmen belonging to Qasimkhel. They also reportedly started a house-to-house search for their rivals in the town. "Families fled their homes and militants brought pick-up trucks and tractor trolleys, taking away everything, including home appliances and weapons," said a tribesman. After taking control of the village, a local commander of the militants appeared in the main Darra Bazaar and announced that the area had been cleared of "criminals." "Criminals have been eliminated and Mujahideen have restored peace", he claimed.

Two planes made six sorties around 3pm (PST) and dropped 12 bombs on Ipi village, three kilometers east of Mirali. Military spokesperson Major General Waheed Arshad said the bombing had targeted militant hideouts in the Ipi, Khedherkhel and Khushali Torikhel villages of Mirali sub-division, adding that he had no confirmation of the number of fatalities. He, however, put the number of militants killed in three days of fighting at 150 and the army’s casualties at 45. "Security forces have also turned down the ceasefire request of militants as their demand cannot be met," the military said, adding that security forces would "continue punitive action till complete peace is restored in restive North Waziristan". Reuters reported that families were streaming out of Mir Ali town of 50,000 people and outlying villages, making their way on foot, in tractor trailers and cars. "Eighty to ninety per cent of families of Mir Ali have gone. Just one or two people are staying behind in each house to guard their belongings," said Sher Khan, a resident.

18 soldiers and two civilians died and 35 others, including nine civilians, were injured in a bomb blast aimed at a vehicle carrying Frontier Constabulary (FC) personnel in the Swat district of the North West Frontier Province (NWFP) on October 25, according to Daily Times. The blast occurred at Nawan Killi, about a kilometer from Swat city, at around 2:45 pm (PST). It set off an explosion of ammunition carried inside the military truck, triggering bullet fire. The blast also damaged 25 shops, a service station, a CNG station and a petrol pump. "I suspect this was the handiwork of a suicide bomber… Part of the truck has been blown up. There is no crater to suggest that it was a roadside bomb. It has been hit from the side," Frontier Constabulary Commandant Malik Mohammad Naveed, whose force suffered most casualties, told Dawn. NWFP Home Secretary Badshah Gul Wazir said: "Investigations are on. But it appears to be the work of a suicide bomber, whether he walked up to the truck or rammed a vehicle into it is yet to be determined." Deputy Inspector-General of Police Akhtar Ali Shah said the evidence suggested a suicide bombing. An AFP report quoted a Swat administration official Fazlur Rehman as saying that 30 people had died in the blast.

At least 29 people were killed and 55 others wounded on the third consecutive day of clashes between Taliban militants and the security forces (SFs) in the Swat district of the North West Frontier Province (NWFP) on October 28, according to The News. The dead included 15 militants, 11 SF personnel and three civilians. Unconfirmed reports, however, said that 20 SF personnel were killed in a suicide bombing in Sangota. There were conflicting claims from both the sides as the military spokesperson Major General Waheed Arshad put the death toll of the militants at 50-60. “The report about the casualties is based on intercepted messages of the local militants,” he claimed. However, he had no information about the fatalities suffered by the SFs. “I can’t give you an exact figure of the casualties from the security forces because the Army is not directly involved in the operation. We have provided them only gunship helicopters,” Waheed added. Sirajuddin, a purported spokesman of the local Taliban and military commander, claimed that no one was killed from their side. He added that 20 SF personnel were killed in a suicide attack in the Sangota area. Sirajuddin also claimed of having blown up a police post in Manglawar on the Malam Jabba Road.
