Two people died in a town in North West Frontier Province (NWFP) on January 30 where a pre-dawn rocket attack on a Shiite Muslim procession sparked a burst of sectarian violence, according to The Hindu. Army personnel were sent into Hangu, 100 kilometres south of Peshawar, capital of NWFP, to restore order after the rocket landed near police protecting the procession to mark the holy festival of Muharram. The two fatalities were from the Sunni community, said Mayor Ghani ur-Rahman. However, it was not immediately clear if the men were killed by the rocket or during the brief clashes between Sunnis and Shiites that followed. Nineteen people were reported injured.

A 24-hour curfew was clamped in the Tank town of North West Frontier Province (NWFP) after a paramilitary soldier and a civilian were killed and 10 people sustained injuries in a series of grenade and rocket attacks on security force (SF) personnel and exchange of fire between militants and SFs on May 14, according to Dawn. District police officer Mumtaz Tareen confirmed the imposition of curfew in the town bordering South Waziristan. Unidentified people reportedly lobbed a hand grenade on a police post and the attack was followed by a heavy exchange of fire between militants and SFs and a rocket attack in the Wazirabad locality of the city, which injured two Frontier Constabulary personnel and two civilians. Later, a police checkpoint at the Durand Gate was attacked by the militants, killing a paramilitary soldier, identified as Naseebullah, and wounding another, Abdul Hafeez. Subsequently, an armoured personnel carrier was also attacked. The heavy exchange of fire, which continued till 11am, led to the death of an unidentified tribesman and injuries to seven others.

Six people were killed and 15 others, including four police personnel, were injured in clashes between security force (SF) personnel and Islamic militants in the Tank city of the North West Frontier Province (NWFP) on May 16, according to Dawn. According to witnesses, a rocket fired by the militants landed in the Rizwan Grain market of the city on Tank-Dera road, killing five civilians, including two brothers. Clashes in different parts of the city occurred for more than two hours and both sides used rockets and light cannons, causing collateral damage to bazaars and residential areas, residents said. Some unidentified people reportedly lobbed hand-grenades at district courts where SFs had set up checkpoints. The attack, however, did not hurt anyone. Later, the militants, armed with rockets and heavy machine-guns, moved into the town and started targeting the SFs. "The number of attackers was about 40 who challenged the security forces and went back to their area," an eye-witness said. People alleged that SFs fired on civilians instead of targeting militants who were seen roaming freely in the city.

Witnesses said that some 20 families of the Qasimkhel tribe surrendered themselves to the militants after 35-hour-long gun fight between the two sides. Both sides targeted each other’s positions with rockets and heavy machine-guns. After capturing the village, the Taliban militants were seen looting houses of tribesmen belonging to Qasimkhel. They also reportedly started a house-to-house search for their rivals in the town. "Families fled their homes and militants brought pick-up trucks and tractor trolleys, taking away everything, including home appliances and weapons," said a tribesman. After taking control of the village, a local commander of the militants appeared in the main Darra Bazaar and announced that the area had been cleared of "criminals." "Criminals have been eliminated and Mujahideen have restored peace", he claimed.

Militants on October 26 publicly executed four security force personnel in a village, 16-km west of Mingora, the headquarters of Swat district in the North West Frontier Province (NWFP), and exchanged heavy gunfire with security forces in a nearby sub-district, according to Dawn. Masked militants armed with rocket-propelled grenades and assault rifles brought the four men to the village at around 5pm, fired a few shots in the air and later beheaded them. "Let this serves as a warning to all those who spy for the government or help the government. All sons of Bush will meet similar fate," a resident quoted one of the militants announcing shortly before the execution. People in Shakkardarra said that militants of Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM), who had set up check-posts on the main road and took positions on hills, seized the four men during the checking of vehicles. No group has so far claimed responsibility for the execution, but Maulana Naddar, a lieutenant of TNSM leader Maulana Fazlullah, said in a broadcast on an FM radio that the men had been executed to avenge the death of three militants killed early in the day.
