Twenty-eight Shia persons were killed and 46 others injured when a suicide bomber struck outside a mosque just after the Friday prayers in Pat Bazaar in Hangu Town (Hangu District) in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on February 1, reports The News. The officials of the bomb disposal unit (BDU) confirmed that it was a suicide attack. “We have recovered the head and legs of the suicide bomber from the spot. Also, a mechanical trigger was recovered from there,” Assistant Inspector General (AIG) of the BDU Shafqat Malik said. He added that around six kilograms of explosives along with pellets were used in the blast to cause more casualties. Hangu has a mixed population of Sunnis and Shias and there has been occasional sectarian strife in the city and also Hangu District. The situation in the adjoining Orakzai and Kurram tribal agencies of Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) also has an impact on Hangu.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Chief Minister Ameer Haider Khan Hoti narrowly escaped a suicide attack on his motorcade at Mardan College Chowk in Mardan Town of same District on February 15, reports Dawn. Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Khalid Khan said that a suicide bomber aged about 23 years attacked the motorcade on the busy Mardan College Chowk when it was on its way to Mardan-i-Khas locality where Mr Hoti was to address a public meeting. The legs and hands of the bomber had been found at the site of the blast and a head outside a nearby building, DSP Khalid Khan added. The Chief Minister appeared to be the target of the bomber but because of strict security measures he could not reach the venue of the public meeting. He said only the bomber, and no-one else, was hurt, he added further.

Four Security Force personnel and one civilian were killed while eight persons, including a senior government official, were injured on February 18 when two suicide bombers attacked the Khyber House, office-cum-residence of Khyber Agency’s political agent in the Cantonment area of Peshawar, the provincial capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, reports The News. Assistant Political Agent (APA) Landikotal, Khalid Mumtaz Kundi, also sustained injuries. “One of the suicide bombers blew himself up at the offices of the telephone operator and control room and of the political agent while another detonated explosives strapped to his body inside the courtroom,” Shafqat Malik, the Assistant Inspector General (AIG) of Police and head of the bomb disposal unit (BDU), said.

A Policeman and three civilians were killed and 49 persons, including a woman additional district and sessions judge, were injured in a suicide attack in a judicial complex in Peshawar, the provincial capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, on March 18, reports Dawn. “Two suicide bombers entered the complex and one of them blew himself up in the courtroom of Additional District and Sessions Judge Kalsoom Zaman while the second was gunned down by police,” Capital City Police Officer Imtiaz Altaf said. He said Police had challenged the bombers at the entrance of the complex, leading to an encounter. Three policemen, including an inspector, suffered injuries. “There were two attackers and both of them were killed,” he added. An official of the bomb disposal unit said that each of the suicide vests contained 8 to 10 kilogrammes of explosives and ball-bearings. The motive of the attack could not be ascertained, but Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) ‘spokesman’ Ehsanullah Ehsan said it was in revenge “for the failure of the country’s judiciary to defend jailed Pakistani scientist Dr Aafia Siddiqui” in the US, reports Daily Times. Peshawar Additional Commissioner Habib Arif said the attackers were likely targeting the Peshawar High Court just on the back side of the judicial complex.

At least 12 persons, including four security personnel, were killed and 35 others were injured in a suicide attack on the vehicle of Commandant of Frontier Constabulary (FCB) Abdul Majeed Marwat in the cantonment area of Peshawar (Peshawar District), the provincial capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, on March 29, reports Daily Times. According to an official, the bomber blew him up when the FC commandant was going from his residence on Khyber Road to FC Headquarters on Shershah Suri Road. Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) ‘spokesman’ Ehsanullah Ehsan made phone calls to media offices in Peshawar to accept responsibility for the attack. “We targeted the FC (commandant) for operations against the Taliban and tribal people.”

Ghulam Ahmad Bilour (75) is contesting from the NA-1, Peshawar. He received minor injuries in the blast. Haroon Bilour, the son of late Bashir Bilour who was killed in a suicide bombing on December 22, 2012, was unhurt in the explosion. He is a candidate from PK-3. Senior police officers confirmed that the blast was carried out by a suicide bomber whose target was Ghulam Ahmad Bilour. “It was a suicide attack and five to six kilogrammes of explosives were used in it,” Assistant Inspector General (AIG) of Bomb Disposal Unit (BDU), Shafqat Malik said. The Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) claimed responsibility for the attack, but apologised for injuring Bilour, saying it had been targeting his nephew, Haroon. “We apologies to Ghulam Bilour because we announced an amnesty for him,” said TTP ‘spokesman’ Ehsanullah Ehsan.

A suicide bomber rammed his explosive-laden motorbike into a Police van, moments after Commissioner Peshawar Sahibzada Mohammad Anis had passed through the area. “Around five kilograms of explosives were planted on the back seat of the motorbike. Ball-bearings were also embedded in the explosive layers to cause more casualties and damage,” Assistant Inspector General (AIG) of the Bomb Disposal Unit (BDU) Shafqat Malik said. Those killed in the blast included the Afghan consulate’s Business Attache, Qazi Hilal, and an official of its refugee section, Mohammad Idrees. Qazi Hilal was son of the former deputy leader of Hezb-i-Islami and Afghanistan’s Former Minister for Justice and Communications, Qazi Amin Waqad. Mullah Nabi Hanfi was a ‘commander’ of the Hangu chapter of the TTP before switching sides and joining the Government’s counter-insurgency efforts. Following the death of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Law Minister Israrullah Gandapur in a suicide attack on October 17, the KP cabinet in a special meeting approved tough decisions to control the law and order situation in the province, Dawn reported on October 18. A special meeting of the KP cabinet, headed by Chief Minister Pervez Khattak, approved the establishment of an anti-terrorism task force which will be led by the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and comprise members of all law enforcement and intelligence agencies including Army, Frontier Corps and Frontier Constabulary. The cabinet has also demanded of the federal Government to return the Frontier Constabulary's platoons back to the province so that they can be deployed at sensitive places for controlling law and order and fighting terrorism. The cabinet in another decision called upon the Federal Government to pace up the peace talks process as KP is facing the brunt of terrorist attacks.
