Punjab police, on January 3, arrested more than 80 cadres of different terrorist and sectarian outfits in the province. Following a list of some 300 cadres of various terrorist groups in Lahore and a similar list of over 500 cadres for other parts of the province, the Punjab police had launched the operation, participated by the security wing of the Punjab police, special branch and intelligence agencies. According to media reports, cadres of the Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) and Jaish –e-Mohammed (JeM), are being arrested though the law enforcement agencies have been asked to crackdown on all terrorist and sectarian outfits. However, LeT spokesperson Yahya Mujahid said only one cadre of his outfit was arrested. "The authorities say that the operation was meant only for sectarian militant groups like Sipah-i-Sahaba and Tehrik-i-Jafria," he added. Yahya also said 12 LeT cadres and some 80 JeM cadres had already been arrested from all over Pakistan.

Separately, a joint investigation team in Lahore on the same day arrested three main suspects from Lahore and Islamabad. The three JeM cadres reportedly said that Pearl’s photograph sent along with the e-mail, had been given to them by Sheikh Omar Syed, a prominent Jaish terrorist linked to the Al Qaeda network of Osama bin Laden. Omar was one of the terrorists released along with JeM chief Maulana Masood Azhar consequent to the hijacking of Indian air craft IC-814 at Kandahar, Afghanistan, in December 1999. The three terrorists are said to have been working as intermediaries between the US journalist and terrorist outfits. Daniel Pearl had gone missing 13 days ago while informing his wife in Karachi that he was to interview Pir Mubarak Ali Shah Gilani of the Jamaat-ul-Fuqra (JF).

A self-claimed killer of US journalist Daniel Pearl was arrested in Lahore on March 14. Adnan alias Sunny, belonging to the banned Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM), appeared at a local Urdu daily's office and claimed having slain Daniel Pearl. Talking to the media, Adnan said he belonged to an educated family although they had disowned him. According to him, "I bought rat-killing pills but, later, thought to die for a cause. I planned to save a soldier like Omar Sheikh. I fabricated the murder story and reached the newspaper office." He said he narrated the story in the said office which published it later. He indicated that the whole story was fake. He claimed that he had joined the JeM in 2001 in Mansehra and got 15-day training. He said he believed Omar Sheikh was not involved in the Pearl killing and hoped his confession of owning the murder would bail Omar out.

In an interview to The News, Aziz said intelligence agencies, after arresting him, had handed him over to American agencies at an unknown place near Islamabad. The US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), with assistance from a local intelligence agency, reportedly, arrested a leading medical practitioner and eight members of his family from their residence alongside GT Road in Manawan, Lahore, on December 19, for their alleged links with the Al Qaeda and the Taliban. The arrested persons included Haji Ahmad Javed Khawaja, a gastro-enterologist, who practiced medicine for 16 years in the United States and the Dominican Republic, his Canadian national brother Ahmad Nadeem––also a doctor, two more brothers Haji Naveed and Ahmad Majeed, and Khawaja’s two American national sons. There were also reports about the arrest of a 10th person with an Arab background. However, the family and official sources have denied confirmation. Official sources said the FBI discovered Khawaja’s links with the Al Qaeda by tracing the Internet channels allegedly being used by him. Khawaja and the rest of those arrested have been taken to an undisclosed destination. He has been charged with providing treatment and financial support to Al Qaeda operatives and is alleged to have visited Kabul after 9/11. According to media reports, Khawaja had often visited Afghanistan during the war against the former Soviet Union and had collected funds for war victims at that time.
