According to a Counter-Terrorism Department spokesman, “a team of Police personnel on January 22 night raided a house in Azam Chowk. The terrorists present in the house opened fire. Sevenmilitants, belonging to Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LeJ), who were on their way to launch an attack in Sharaqpur area, were killed in an exchange of gunfire during a Police encounter in Sheikhupura District on February 17, reports Daily Times. According to a statement from the Provincial Counter Terrorism Department (CTD), a dozen or so militants were riding motorcycles and were on their way to attack Police when they were intercepted. “When the firing stopped, seven unknown terrorists were found dead,” it said, adding that the men were killed “by firing from their accomplices who fled from the scene taking benefit of darkness”. The Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) and Police, in a joint action, killed at least three militants in Khanewal District of Punjab Province on April 9, reports The News. The fourth terrorist detonated his explosive vest killing himself on the spot. The Police and CTD, on a tip-off, carried out joint action and exchange of fire took place near Lakhi Tibbi Adda. Two to three others managed to flee taking advantage of the darkness. CTD sources said the terrorists were affiliated to Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and Al Qaeda and were plotting to target sensitive installations in Multan. The law enforcers recovered suicide jackets, two pistols and automatic rifle from the possession of the militants.

The officials claimed to have recovered two suicide jackets and three hand grenades from their possession, said to a CTD statement. While conducting a raid in the Bypass Sem Nala area, CTD officials were shot at by two attackers, the statement said, adding that CTD officials fired back in self-defense. Army helicopter gunships on April 18 pounded the island hideout of Chotu gang that has been holding 24 hostages on a 10-km (six-mile) long island in the centre of the Indus River in Rajanpur District of Punjab, report Daily Times. The operation involving more than 2,000 Security Forces (SFs) has been ongoing for two weeks and the Army’s push to deploy troops, artillery and helicopter gunships is an unprecedented use of force by the military in Punjab. “We (army) had given the Chotu gang until 2 pm today to surrender but they did not abide by the deadline,” said a military official based in the district of Rajanpur where the battle is taking place. “Now there is no option left but a full-scale operation, which has started.”

Police sources said that acting on a tip-off that some suspects were hiding in the village, a joint team of the law enforcement agency and the counterterrorism department raided a house, but suspects opened fire on them. Police retaliated and shot dead the suspects — Javaid, his wife Naheeda Bibi and son Ahmed — and took into custody another suspect Mohammed Usman. One law enforcement official, identified as Sarfaraz, lost his life, while two other people, including a security man, were injured in the clash.

Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) of Multan registered a First Information Report (FIR) after eight alleged terrorists were killed during an encounter on May 18, reports The Daily Times. A CTD official said that they had information from credible sources that al Qaeda ‘commanders’ Muneeb Javed alias Qandhari, Tayab Nawaz alias Hafiz Abdul Mateen, Muneeb Razaq alias Abdur Rehman and Zeeshan alias Abu Dajana were coming to Multan to hold a meeting in the city suburbs with al Qaeda ‘commander’ Bilal Latif alias Yasir Punjabi and others including two suicide bombers to plan attack on a university in Multan. A joint team of the CTD and a law enforcement agency team raided the meeting point near Nawabpur village on the bank of river Chenab. The militants opened fire on the CTD team and fired rockets and hand grenades. Yasir Punjabi and Muneeb Javed escaped from the scene along with five to six associates. As many as eight militants were killed by the firing initiated by their accomplices, a CTD official said. Those killed included Tayyab alias Abdul Matin, Muneeb Razaq alias Abdur Rahman, Zeeshan alias Abu Dajana and others. The identity of the other militants killed was being determined.A suicide jacket, two AK 47 rifles, two pistols, and three hand grenades were recovered from the scene.

The Police had received intelligence reports that militants hiding there were planning attacks on sensitive government sites, including the office of the District Police Officer (DPO), said Superintendent of Police (SP) Saud Magsi. Seven suspected Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LeJ) and the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) militants were killed on July 31 during an exchange of fire with Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) personnel near the Parrianwala railway crossing in Sheikhupura District of Punjab, reports Dawn. A CTD Punjab spokesman said Sheikhupura Police "received information from a credible source that nine to ten suspects belonging to the TTP and LeJ were present near the Parrianwala railway crossing at around 1am. He claimed they were planning to attack sensitive installations and personnel belonging to law enforcement agencies in the city. Weapons and ammunition were allegedly recovered from the suspects, including 5 kilograms of explosive material, two detonators, three motorcycles, three Kalashnikov rifles, four pistols and 150 bullets.

A militant was killed after an exchange of fire with the Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) personnel in Rakh Pabbi village of Gujrat District on August 23, reports Dawn. According to details, his other accomplices fled, while the one found dead was killed by the firing of his own accomplices. A spokesperson for the CTD said the CTD received information that some militants in a house in Rakh Pabbi village of Gujrat were planning to attack law enforcement agency officials. A CTD team ordered them to turn themselves in but they started indiscriminate firing on them. The team took cover and when firing stopped, one of the militants was found killed by the firing of his own accomplices. Other militants escaped while two hand grenades and other weapons were found at the scene.

According to details, CTD officials were involved in an alleged encounter with terrorists during which a suspected militant was killed. During the exchange of fire, two CTD officials were also injured. The militant, who has been identified as Ahsan Swati, was killed by the firing of his associates. Bullets, pistols, rifles and IEDs were recovered from the suspected slain militant.

The suspects opened fire during CTD raid that was conducted on a tip of about presence of militants in the Choti Bala area. Five of them were killed while four suspects are said to have fled during the exchange of fire. Two of the suspects killed in the operation were identified as Malik Tehseen and Kamran. Arms and explosive material was also recovered in the operation.
