Separately, three Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) Hakimullah Mehsud group militants were arrested along with a huge cache of weapons, said the Crime Investigation Department (CID) on March 13. During their investigation into terrorism, Police were informed of TTP militants’ presence in a squatter settlement of Manghopir. Pursuing the lead, CID Operations Wing conducted a raid in the area, where terrorists opened fire on the law enforcers’ team. The CID retaliated and, after a brief encounter, arrested Muhammad Shoaib Mehsud, Khalid Rehman Mehsud and Aurangzeb Mehsud. When the CID officials searched their hideout, they recovered an eight suicide jacket, a blasting mortar shell, three hand grenades, a Kalashnikov, two TT pistols, a battery, two battery cells, an electronic button, detonating wire, a kilogram of ball bearings and a large quantity of bullets. Initial investigation revealed that the militants worked in Karachi under Shehzad Rehman Mehsud’s command. The accused were involved in extortion, kidnappings for ransom and target killings, and were assigned targets by Shehzad Mehsud. The extortion and ransom money was sent to their ‘commander’ Jiyaad Yaar in Waziristan (FATA). The accused admitted that they were going to carry out a suicide attack in Karachi, for which they were awaiting Jiyaad Yaar to specify a target. The militants had recently abducted machinery export businessman from Super Market and demanded ransom from the family via call from Waziristan. The accused were also planning to abduct a businessman from Gulistan-e-Jauhar, but were arrested before their plan could come to fruition.

At least 15 persons, including five workers of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), a cadre of Sunni Tehreek (ST) and a Police Inspector, were killed on July 8, reported The Express Tribune. The neighbourhoods of New Karachi, North Karachi, Surjani and Orangi towns were tense after the target killing of MQM joint unit in-charge, Izhar Hussain, on the night of July 7, 2013 in Khwaja Ajmer Nagri Police remits. In the same incident during an exchange of fire an member of MQM, identified as Imran, was also killed. ST spokesperson Fahim Shaikh claimed that Imran was a target killer. He was trying to flee with his accomplice after opening fire when a bullet fired by the deceased ST worker hit him. The ST spokesman, while talking to the daily, blamed the MQM for the killing of its worker. “When we increase our political activities, the MQM starts killings our men,” he alleged. A Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Qasim Ghauri, and an Assistant Sub Inspector (ASI) of Police, Aslam, were killed while the Station House Officer (SHO) Haider Zaidi and two other constables were injured on August 15 during a six-hour-long operation to arrest a gang of extortionists in the Gulshan Town of Karachi District, the provincial capital of Sindh, reports The Express Tribune. The operation was carried out against gangster Zamin Shah Chandio, who was hiding in the settlements of Hussain Hazara Goth and Madho Goth near Safari Park in the Gulistan-e-Jauhar area of the Town. In retaliation the Police killed Zamin Chandio, along with his three accomplices Ilahi Bux Chachar, Ardillo and Sunbul Ahmed. According to Police details, Chandio had refused to pay bribe to the Gulistan-e-Jauhar Police Station and allegedly assaulted its Police Constable, Waseem. When the injured constable returned, the Police team went to raid the gangster’s hideout. However, the gangsters opened fire at the Police team killing Police officers. In retaliatory firing the gangster along with his accomplices was shot dead. Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Tahir Naveed, who was supervising the entire operation, criticised the Policemen occupying lower ranks in the Department. “Some black sheep of the Police Department were involved in giving permission to some criminals to run their illegal activities in the area,” he pointed out, adding that these Policemen had allowed gambling dens, land grabbing and extortions to take place under their patronage. “These same elements were involved in the Police encounter.” However, the leader of Jeay Sindh Tehreek (JST), an offshoot of Jeay Sindh Qaumi Mahaz (JSQM), Habib Jatoi admitted that the deceased were their party activists and the Police shot them dead in a fake encounter. When the Police reached the area, the activists surrendered themselves, he claimed. “Basically, it was an extra-judicial killing.”
