JeI Chief Qazi Hussain Ahmed, on September 24, gave a countrywide strike call for September 28 to protest against the Federal government’s decision to join the US-led retaliatory strike on the Taliban regime in Afghanistan. The Jamaat Chief was addressing a press conference in Peshawar after presiding over a meeting of the Islami Muttahida Inqilabi Mahaz (IMIM), an umbrella outfit of JeI, JuI, Tehreek-e-Jaferia Pakistan (TJP), Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistan (SSP), Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal and the Ahle Hadith (Sajid group). He also warned that JeI cadres would besiege Islamabad if US forces landed on Pakistan's territory. According to him, "Retaliatory action against Afghanistan would be considered an attack on Pakistan itself and it is our religious duty to defend Afghans against foreign invasion."

Quetta was the scene of violence on October 8 when religious parties, including the JuI took out protest rallies following air strikes by the US-led coalition on Kandahar, Kabul, and Jalalabad. Violence continued on October 9 during the protests in which three cinema halls, many banks and a large number of shops were damaged.

A security force personnel was killed and approximately seven persons injured in Karachi on October 12 during clashes with violent demonstrators protesting against the US air strikes on the Taliban regime in Afghanistan. More than 70 persons have been arrested. Pakistani media reports have indicated that at least two restaurants owned by an American fast food outlet were ransacked and damaged, while two cars belonging to local bodies representatives were set on fire, and over two dozens other cars were damaged during the day-long clashes in Karachi. Most of the demonstrations and protests were held after the Friday prayers, when people came out of mosques chanting slogans against the US-led attacks on Afghanistan as well as against the government for extending support to the US. The Pakistan Afghanistan Defence Council (PADC), composed of 35 religious parties, had given the call for the strike. The police who raided houses of at least a dozen politico-religious leaders overnight arrested at least six religious leaders including Maulana Asad Thanvi and Maulana Mohammad Hussain Mahanti. The two leaders were later released.

The Jamaat-Ulema-e-Islam (JuI) has decided to block the Jacobabad airport on October 14. JuI Secretary-General Maulana Abdul Ghafur Haidri stated this in Quetta on October 12. The JuI has also decided to observe a countrywide strike on October 15. He added that the Quetta airport would also be blocked if its facilities were offered to launch attack on Afghanistan. The JuI leader's threats came in the wake of reports that the Pakistani government had handed over airports at Jacobabad, Pasni and other places to the US-led coalition forces to carry out air attacks on the Taliban regime in Afghanistan. The JuI also demanded the release of its leaders Maulana Fazlur Rehman, Maulana Samiul Haq and Azam Tariq.

The Secretary General of Jamaat-Ulema-e-Islam (JuI) Maulana Abdul Ghafoor Haidri said in Quetta on October 13 that the government should not stop its activists from reaching the Jacobabad airport during its planned blockade of the airport on October 14. He said, "any high handedness to stop our supporters from reaching Jacobabad on Sunday will trigger off an un-ending chain reaction." The JuI had called for the blockade to protest against the alleged handing over of airport facilities to USA to carry out bombing of Kandahar and other cities of Afghanistan. The JuI also urged the military regime to review and reconsider their decision of offering logistic support and air space to the US warplanes for bombing of Afghanistan. Haideri indicated that ‘trained’ activists of JuI-Fazlur Rahman faction, one of the major supporters of Taliban in Pakistan, will attempt to cordon off the Jacobabad airport as hundreds of its ‘commandos’ have left Quetta for Jacobabad on October 13.

Major religious and political parties in Pakistan have called for a countrywide strike on October 15, today, to protest against the US Secretary of State, Colin Powell's visit to Islamabad. The parties include the Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI), both the factions of the Jamaat-Ulema-e-Islam (JuI) headed by Maulana Fazlur Rehman and Maulana Samiul Haq respectively, the Jamaat Ahle Hadith of Sajid Mir, Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistan (SSP), Tanzim-e-Islami Pakistan headed by Israr Ahmad and the Jamaat-e-Ulema-e-Pakistan (JuP) of Maulana Shah Ahmad Noorani. These parties have opined that Colin Powell had planned his visit to Pakistan "to insult Pakistanis and they would not tolerate his arrival on the Pakistan land." Alliance for the Restoration of Democracy (ARD) President Nawabzada Nasrullah Khan has also supported the strike call and so has the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz, a component of the multi-party opposition grouping. However, two other important components of the ARD - Pakistan People's Party (PPP) and the Awami National Party (ANP) are staying away from the strike. Leaders of the protesting religious and political parties have appealed to the business community and the people at large to express complete solidarity with the Afghans and also to condemn US air strikes on Afghanistan. Meanwhile, the government has announced that it would deal decisively with unlawful protests and security forces are reportedly patrolling all major cities to maintain law and order. Meanwhile, Pakistan Afghanistan Defence Council (PADC) Chairman Maulana Samiul Haq called upon the masses to observe a strike on the arrival of Colin Powell. In a statement issued on October 14, he claimed that the US had planned to ‘hand’ Kashmir over to India after "spoiling brotherly relations between Pakistan and Afghanistan."
