Four soldiers were killed died and two others sustained injuries when the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) rebels fired artillery and mortar shells at the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) detachment at Mankerni in the Batticaloa district on January 13, reports Xinhua quoting defence officials. According to Associated Press, military spokesperson, Brig. Prasad Samarasinghe, said, "They (rebels) targeted our camp in Mankerni with artillery fire late Saturday and we lost four soldiers." Earlier, Sri Lanka Air Force jets damaged a LTTE base in the Verugal area, about 20-kilometers north of the Military's Mankerni camp, said Samarasinghe, adding, in the Ampara district, anti-terrorist commandoes captured two more LTTE bases, bringing the total number of the outfit’s bases captured this week to four. Seven smaller camps have also fallen in Ampara, further south of Batticaloa, the military said. The Special Task Force on January 9 had captured the main LTTE base at Kanjikuduchiaru after launching its offensive code named "Victory Assured" in the area in order to capture LTTE-controlled thickets in the Ampara district.

Nine security force (SF) personnel, including two officers, were killed and 20 others wounded during the clash. As reported earlier, LTTE cadres had infiltrated the area and launched a pre-dawn ground attack on the air base and subsequently carried out an aerial attack dropping two shells damaging two MI 24 helicopters parked in the hangar. Meanwhile, IANS quoted the outfit’s military spokesman Rasiyha Illanthiriyan as saying, "A combined unit of 21 Black Tigers attacked the Anuradhapura air base, the largest operations logistic base in Sri Lanka. Following this attack, at 4.30 a.m. the LTTE Air Force bombed the same Sri Lankan Air Force base. Here is the list of aircraft belonging to the Sri Lankan Air Force that were totally destroyed by the LTTE: one training plane, two MI-24 helicopters, one MI-17, one PT-6, one Bell-212, one reconnaissance plane, one CTH-748." Daily Times quoting officials and witnesses reports that pro-Taliban militants captured one police station, paramilitary force camp and other government buildings at Kalam on November 7, extending their hold over the Swat valley. Militants loyal to the rebel cleric Maulana Fazlullah are reportedly in control of six tehsils (revenue division), including Kabal, Matta, Khawazakhela, Charbagh, Maydan and Kalam, out of the eight tehsils in the Swat district. According to Online, the militants have ‘appointed’ officials in the towns they control and ‘seized’ government and non governmental organisation vehicles. An unnamed police official said that dozens of paramilitary troops and police surrendered their weapons to the militants and retreated from Kalam on November 7. Before taking Kalam, the militants captured the town of Bahrain, having seized Madyan on November 6, officials and residents said. Local residents said a jirga (council) of elders later pledged to support the militants if they agreed to leave the town. “We did this because we feared gunship helicopters will also pound our areas if the militants stayed in control….We asked the Taliban to leave Kalam and they granted our request,” said a local elder Hameed Kalami.

32 more persons, including five children, a woman and two Frontier Constabulary (FC) personnel, were killed and scores of others injured on December 26 in continued sectarian violence in Kurram Agency on the fourth consecutive day, The News reported. The death toll from the four days of clashes has reportedly increased to 47 while more than 100 people have been injured. Official sources said the rival groups attacked each other’s positions in Balishkhel, Sadda, Sangina, Khar Kali, Ali Zaik, Bagan and Upper Kurram. Curfew has been clamped in Parachinar for the last five days without any break thus causing severe shortage of edibles and medicines. Heavy weapons, including mortar and rocket shells, are allegedly being used by both the warring groups. One of the shells that landed at a residential area in Sadda bazaar killed five children and a woman and wounded six children. Further, a group of armed men attacked the Mangak security post manned by FC personnel near Sadda killing two soldiers, Taza Gul and Niaz. A rocket attack killed two people at Balishkhel mosque and injured seven others. Three tribesmen were killed during a clash in the suburbs of the city and two in the Ahmadi Shuma area of Lower Kurram. Details of those killed elsewhere in the clashes on December 26 were not available.
