10 persons were killed and over 20 others injured as three unidentified terrorists opened fire on a group of approximately 40 persons offering prayers at the Shah Najaf Mosque in Khayaban-e-Sir Syed, Rawalpindi, on February 26. Media sources indicated that no group has thus far claimed responsibility for the suspected sectarian killing. No arrests have been made either in connection with the massacre. Meanwhile, while strongly condemning the massacre, President Pervez Musharraf has directed the Punjab and Federal governments to swiftly undertake a joint investigation and submit a report at the earliest. The President added that groups opposed to the government's policy of countering terrorism are "out to detract it from pursuing it vigorously…Those responsible would be unearthed and given exemplary punishment." Media reports have indicated that it was the first sectarian attack since the January 12-Presidential announcement of a crackdown on Islamist extremism and sectarianism. Separately, Interior Secretary Tasneem Noorani said the massacre was "a very reprehensible attack. This clearly appears to be a sectarian attack. It (sectarianism) has been curbed in the past, but to expect that everything will fall in line is expecting too much." Rawalpindi Range Deputy Inspector-General of Police Fareed Nawaz said the killing appeared to be sectarian motivated and was most probable that the killers had fled to neighbouring Islamabad.

In an attack on the Raghunath temple in Jammu by the two fidayeen (suicide squad) of an unidentified terrorist group, at least seven persons, including three security force (SF) personnel were killed and more than twenty injured on March 30. The terrorists who arrived in a white ambassador car lobbed a grenade first and tried to make their way through the temple gate, guarded by the Special Service Bureau (SSB) personnel. However, one of the terrorist was killed in the encounter. The other terrorist, while firing indiscriminately, managed to sneak inside the temple premises. He was also killed in the ensuing encounter. Reports are uncertain about the number of terrorists killed inside the temple. Some add that there was a third fidayeen member as well, who blew himself after he ran short of ammunition inside the sanctum sanatorium of the temple. Four persons, including a woman pilgrim were killed in the firing by the terrorists. Three security personnel, including two SSB constables were also killed in the attack while trying to repulse the terrorist attack. The death of a fourth SF personnel is not yet confirmed. Reports further said at least twenty persons were injured during the exchange of fire. The identity of the terrorist outfit behind this attack is not yet confirmed. Anil Goswami, the Jammu Divisional Commissioner (DC), and Pitambar Lal Gupta, the Inspector General of Police (IGP) did not say anything regarding their identity. The former said "The terrorists or their outfit had not been identified so far". However, a terrorist outfit, the Islamic Front is said to have called up the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) Jammu office on March 30 to claim the responsibility of the attack.

Three women and a terrorist were killed and 24 persons injured as terrorists attacked the John C. Heinrich Memorial chapel in the Mission Hospital at Taxila on August 9. According to media reports, it was unclear thus far whether the terrorist was shot by his accomplices or died from a shrapnel injury. The police have recovered a hand grenade from his body. The three women killed were staff nurses at the Mission Hospital. According to eyewitness accounts, there were approximately 200 hospital staff participating in the service when the terrorists attacked the chapel. The other two terrorists of the group managed to escape from the incident site. The hospital, which is supported by the Presbyterian Church USA and the Presbyterian Church of Pakistan, was founded in 1922 and treats mostly poor Muslim patients. Preliminary police reports indicated that the Taxila attack was linked to the August 5 terrorist attack on a Christian missionary school in Muree in which six persons were killed and four others injured. Police sources indicated that the Taxila assailants were linked to the Murree incident as the attacker who died was wearing clothing similar to that of the terrorists who carried out the Muree attack.

An estimated 30 persons were killed and nearly 100 injured when heavily armed terrorists, in a suicide attack, stormed the Akshardham temple of the Swaminarayan sect in Gandhinagar, the capital of Gujarat State, on September 24 evening. Official sources placed the toll at 25 killed and 77 injured. But, media reports quoting sources in hospitals, to which the dead bodies have been shifted, said 30 people have died and the toll could rise as some of the injured were in a critical condition According to official sources, terrorists came in an ambassador car and jumped over a gate to gain entry into the temple complex at around 5 pm, the time for devotees to usually gather for evening prayers. Lobbing hand grenades they went on a shooting spree, firing from AK-47 assault rifles, and injuring people around. They moved on from the exhibition complex to the main temple before climbing and taking positions on the rooftop. The commando operation to flush out the terrorists ended with the killing of terrorists, who were holed inside the temple. Commandos of the National Security Guard (NSG) conducted the operation, today, September 25 morning. Amid confusion about the exact number of terrorists involved, State Chief Minister Narendra Modi said only two terrorists had entered the temple and both of them had been killed. He said a large quantity of ammunition had been recovered from the slain terrorists whose identity is yet not known. According to Gujarat police chief K Chakravarty, two security force personnel including, an NSG commando, were killed in the operation. Three NSG commandos and seven other security force personnel, including a Superintendent of Police, were injured in the operation.
