Militants attacked six vehicles taking supplies for NATO forces in Afghanistan and set five of them on fire in two different areas of Balochistan on January 30, reported Dawn. In the first incident, armed militants opened fire on three trailers going to Chaman town in Qilla Abdullah District from Karachi (Sindh) near Wadh area of Khuzdar District and set two of them afire. The third trailer skidded off the road and plunged into a ditch after the driver lost its control. The assailants escaped after the attack. In the second incident, in Mastung District, three oil tankers carrying fuel for NATO forces were attacked with grenades and burnt by armed militants in Ganji Dori area of Mastung District. As a result of the grenade-and-gun attack the three tankers caught fire. The assailants, eight in number, escaped from the incident site. However, no casualties were reported in these incidents.

An unidentified militants set ablaze two containers carrying military hardware for ISAF and NATO forces stationed in Afghanistan, in two separate incidents that took place on the RCD highway near Pir Umer area of Khuzdar and Maizai Ada in Chaman Districts on February 3. In the first incident, a container carrying military hardware for NATO forces stationed in Afghanistan was going to Chaman from Karachi, when unidentified assailants opened fire on it at Maizai Ada killing the driver on the spot while the cleaner sustained bullet injuries. Separately, unidentified armed militants set ablaze a NATO container on the RCD Highway near Pir Umer area of Khuzdar District. Officials said that the attackers made the driver and the cleaner hostage at gunpoint and set the container on fire, and escaped from the incident site. No outfit claimed responsibility for either incident.

The tanker was parked on the roadside when it was dynamited with a time device, the sources said. According to the officials, the two oil tankers carrying fuel for NATO forces stationed in Afghanistan were on their way from Karachi to Kandahar when unidentified armed men on motorcycles intercepted the tankers and opened fire at them on the National Highway near Mithri. As a result, the tankers caught fire and were completely destroyed. The assailants managed to escape from the scene after committing the crime. No one had claimed responsibility for the attack until the filing of this report.

Out of the four militants killed in the strike three were Egyptians linked to the Haqqani Network. One militant was identified as Abdullah, who played a key role in handling the militant group’s finances in Pakistan and Afghanistan. In addition, an Afghan Taliban commander said that another militant killed in the strike was identified as Ahmed Omar Abdel Rahman, the son of a blind Egyptian cleric Sheikh Omar Abdel Rahman, serving a life sentence in the US since 1995 for plotting to attack New York City landmarks. Ahmed Omar had been living in a village in North Waziristan for the past three years and encouraged the TTP militants to halt its campaign against the Islamabad Government and help the Afghan Taliban in their fight against the US-led NATO forces in Afghanistan. A fourth militant who was also killed has not been identified.
