At least 25 persons were killed and over 100 others, including women and children, wounded in twin blasts in Karachi as the city marked Hazrat Imam Hussain’s chehlum (40the Day after death) ceremony on February 5, according to Daily Times. The sources said that the first explosion occurred at around 3:03pm (PST) in the Shahrah-e-Faisal area of Karachi targeting a bus taking 30-40 mourners to the city’s main chehlum procession at Nishtar Park, killing at least 13 people and injuring another 50. City Police chief Waseem Ahmad told the media while a motorbike fitted with an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) was used to carry out the attack, it was unclear if a bomber was riding the bike or it was parked and detonated when the bus passed by. The second explosion, which killed around 12 persons and wounded dozens of others, took place at around 4:55pm at Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, where those injured or killed in the first explosion were being taken amid a crowd of victims’ relatives and the media. The blast at the medical centre targeted the building’s parking lot in front of the emergency ward. Several vehicles, including ambulances, were also damaged in the attack. Crime Investigation Department (CID) Senior Superintendent of Police (Operations) Fayyaz Khan said the latest attacks did not appear to have any link with another blast on December 28, 2009, which targeted Karachi’s main Muharram procession, as they were carried out using devices connected to cell phones and placed inside boxes positioned on bikes. BDS official Muneer Sheikh described the attacks as “suicide bombings”, and said a dead body found from the site of the first blast could be of the bomber. He said at least 15-20 kilogrammes of explosives were used in the first attack, while around 10 kilogrammes were used in the second. He said nuts, bolts and ball bearings were also found from the sites of the attack, and the “bombings appear similar to the Ashura attack”. The Federal Interior Minister Rehman Malik has described the attacks as incidents of “sectarian violence”. In addition, the National security institutions for probe into Karachi blasts said that there is similarity between the February 5’s twin blasts in Karachi and blast on M A Jinnah Road on Youm-e-Ashur on December 28, 2009. The accused used similar nut-bolts and other parts in the manufacturing of bombs used for these blasts, it said. According to Police sources, preliminary investigation showed that Korangi group of Jandullah is behind the Karachi blasts. Meanwhile, Jandullah sources strongly rejected its involvement in the blasts in Karachi and said that they were not behind these blasts.

Unidentified gunmen opened fire on a religious procession in the Dhaki More neighbourhood of Dera Ismail Khan District of North West Frontier Province (NWFP) on February 27, killing a person and wounding several others, according to Dawn. Sources said that the attack came as thousands of Muslims staged rallies across the country to celebrate Eid Miladun Nabi, which marks the Prophet Mohammad's birthday. Two or three armed men hiding behind the trees opened fire on hundreds of people carrying banners and reciting hymns in the Dhaki, Senior Police Officer Bashar Khan said. The rally was organised by a Sunni Muslim party. No arrests were reported. Khan said seven participants in the rally were wounded in the attack, one of whom died later in hospital. “Dera Ismail Khan has been target of both militant attacks and sectarian violence,” local Police Chief Gul Afzal Afridi said.

Twelve persons, including four women, were killed and 33 others injured when a suicide bomber targeted a Parachinar-bound civilian convoy carrying Shia passengers in Tull area of Hangu in North West Frontier Province (NWFP) on March 5, according to Daily Times. Local administration officials said the suicide bomber blew himself up when the civilian convoy, on its way to Parachinar and escorted by the Frontier Corps, slowed down at a speed breaker near a petrol station, some two kilometres from Tull city. Thirteen of the injured persons are said to be students of a local private school. Eyewitnesses said that the suicide bomber was on foot and was waiting near the petrol station. They said he detonated the explosives strapped to his body when the convoy passed by. "The target was a Shia convoy. This is sectarian violence," Kohat Division Commissioner Khalid Umarzai said.

Intelligence agencies have reported that Shia outfits are operating in southern Punjab and are working against their rival factions, according to Daily Times. Intelligence agencies have collected data on the cadres of banned religious outfits and militants gathering in southern Punjab and their links to the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and even al Qaeda. The sources said that top officials of intelligence agencies had recommended a massive operation in the southern parts of the Province due to an increase in the activities of extremists and banned militant outfits, including a curb on holding processions and small-scale meetings, which not only risk an increase in terrorist incidents, but also escalate sectarian and communal tension in the province. The reports state that several militant groups are organising their networks in southern Punjab, especially in Bahawalnagar, Haroonabad, Shujaabad, Bahawalpur, Rajanpur, Bhakkar and Dera Ghazi Khan.

At least 10 persons were killed and their houses set ablaze in sectarian violence in Kurram Agency of Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) on July 29, reports Daily Times. Local residents said that men of the Shia sect carried out the attack. The incident occurred in the Sanghbakht village inhabited by the Mengal tribe near the Afghanistan border. Mengal tribesmen are predominantly Sunni and live on both sides of the Pakistan-Afghanistan border. "They (attackers) first evicted the residents from their homes, ransacked them and killed 10 persons on the spot," the residents said adding that the attack could be retaliation for the attack on a convoy of Shias on July 16 in which 18 persons were killed. Parachinar and other towns of Kurram had been witnessing sectarian violence since a long time and the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) used the tense relations between Sunnis and Shias to strengthen their presence in the area. Local residents said that four women and two children were missing in the aftermath of the attack.
