"Nearly 500 Maoist rebels surrounded the outpost and hurled petrol bombs before firing indiscriminately around midnight last night. Policemen retaliated and the gunfight lasted till three in the morning," said Sergeant Major J.K. Jha. Police have claimed some fatality on the Maoists side on the basis of bloodstains found at the encounter site. A civilian was also injured in the attack. Hundreds of militants captured a paramilitary fort in South Waziristan on January 15-night after killing 22 soldiers and taking several others hostage, according to Dawn. 600 to 700 militants reportedly attacked the fort in Sararogha, manned by the South Waziristan Scouts, at around 9pm on January 15, firing rockets and mortars. 38 paramilitary soldiers and six civilians were in the fort when it came under the assault. "Soldiers put up a good fight, but couldn’t hold out for long in the face of an overwhelming militant force," a source said. The last distress radio message, according to him, was made at around 3am to the Ludda Fort, asking for artillery fire at the militants who had broken through the defences and begun pouring into the base. The military said on January 16 that 40 militants were killed in the gun battle. While 15 soldiers escaped and reached the Jandola Fort, the fate of the rest was not known, it stated.

Around 3,000 Maoist insurgents attacked the Latinath police post in Darchula district on February 13 for arresting two of their cadres, Himalayan Times reports. The two were arrested for their reported involvement in the recent attack on Nepali Congress leader and former minister Dilendra Badu in Latinath. Led by the Maoist district committee members, Daman Dhami and Kamala Panta, the insurgents hurled stones at the police post. Darchula Chief District Officer Yagya Raj Bohora said that the CPN-Maoist cadres barged into the kitchen, threw away all the food and looted the utensils. They also cut off the drinking water supply line and issued a diktat to the local traders not to supply groceries or food stuff to the police until their comrades are released.

13 police personnel and a civilian were killed and four policemen were wounded when around 500 heavily armed cadres of the Communist Party of India - Maoist (CPI-Maoist) attacked a Police Training School (PTS), the district armoury and district police station in co-ordinated attacks near Daspalla in the Nayagarh district at around 10:45pm (IST) on February 15, reported Times of India. They also took away a cache of arms and ammunition in a bus they had hijacked in the district, about 100-km from State capital Bhubaneswar. Police sources claimed that three Maoists were also killed in the incident. However, their bodies have not been recovered and it is suspected that the Maoists before fleeing took away the bodies of their slain comrades. Before launching the attack, the Maoists, speaking in Hindi and Telugu, and suspected to be from neighbouring Chhattisgarh and Andhra Pradesh, announced that they would not harm the public as their target was the police. The police suspect it to be the handy work of Sabyasachi Panda, the CPI-Maoist Andhra-Orissa ‘secretary’. Meanwhile, a red alert has been sounded in the State and the police have started combing operations in the neighbouring districts of Phulbani, Gajapati, Rayagada and Malkangiri in Orissa. The attack was the first of its kind in coastal Orissa, according to The Hindu. The district armoury and PTS were virtually emptied by the Maoists, the police said. Though Nayagarh district had been unaffected by the Maoist insurgency, the extremists are active in the neighbouring Gajapati and parts of Kandhamal district. Nayagarh is also reportedly the home town of Maoist leader Sabysachi Panda.

However, Superintendent of Police for Peshawar’s rural area Nasirul Mulk Bangash told reporters that the attack had been carried out by criminals and not militants. He claimed that the attackers were impersonating militants to frighten the police so that they could continue their criminal activities in the area, including kidnapping people and snatching cars on the Indus Highway.

Hundreds of Taliban militants attacked a security check-post near the Afghan border late on August 6, sparking fierce clashes in which up to 10 soldiers and 25 militants were killed, officials said on August 7, Daily Times reported. The security forces (SFs) had deployed a large force at Loyesam, 12 kilometers from Khar, headquarters of the Bajaur Agency in FATA, in a bid to reclaim important nearby Taliban strongholds. A Frontier Corps officer told AFP that 300-400 militants armed with AK-47 assault rifles, rocket launchers and grenades, participated in the attack. "The firing continued the whole night. This morning reinforcements were sent. One vehicle was hit by an improvised explosive device on its way to the post and the convoy was then attacked by Taliban militants," the official said. "Up to 25 militants were killed and at least 10 Frontier Corps soldiers have also been martyred," an unidentified security official told AFP. However, the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) spokesman Maulvi Umar said 18 SF personnel were killed, a claim that is yet to be ascertained independently. Umar said the Taliban would use all resources to regain control of Loyesam area. He also claimed that 17 SF personnel had been held hostage, five of them with severe injuries, Dawn reported.

The Frontier Corps (FC) is reported to have killed about 15 Taliban militants in the Kurram Agency on August 20, Daily Times reported. The FC was directed to launch the operation after all efforts for a cease-fire between the warring factions in the Agency failed, said a press release issued by the Interior Ministry in Islamabad on August 20. The statement said a jirga (council) from Hangu was dispatched to Kurram Agency to establish a truce between the warring factions. However, both sides violated the cease-fire and the FC was directed to establish the writ of the Government. The press release said that on August 19-night, between 300 to 400 Taliban militants attacked an FC post at Matak. The troops repelled the attack, inflicting heavy casualties on the militants.
