Police had information that a large number of Maoists had gathered in the Ranja forest. They received more specific information about their movement after interrogating 13 persons from a nearby village on June 15. Apart from 10 members of People's Committee against Police Atrocities (PCPA), a Maoist front organisation, three persons from Kolkata — a scientist, a college teacher and a writer — were also arrested. All of them have been labelled as Maoist sympathisers. Sify adds 13 people, including two Kolkata-based professors, were arrested on June 15 for their alleged links with Maoists in West Midnapore District, Police said. Two city-based professors - Nisha Biswas and Kanishka Chowdhury, a teacher identified as Modhusudan and an editor of a local magazine Manik Mondal - were arrested along with other villagers from Kantapahari area under Lalgarh Police Station, said Manoj Verma. "They were arrested on charges of violating prohibitory orders banning assembly of more than two people at a time," he said. "We came to know that the group came to the village three days back and met a second rung leader of Communist Party of India-Maoist. They also attended the proceedings of a Maoist kangaroo court," Verma added. An unnamed senior police officer said, "The city-based group and some other members of the forum had close links with Maoists. They even maintained regular contact with Maoist cadres operating in West Bengal. We have collected evidence regarding their contacts with Maoists."

Sify reports that 13 people, including three intellectuals, arrested for alleged links with Maoists in West Midnapore District were remanded by a court to judicial custody for 14 days. The 13, who have been booked for waging war against the State and charged under various sections of penal code, were presented in a lower court in Jhargram in the District. West Midnapore Superintendent of Police Monoj Verma said all three city intellectuals -- scientist Nisha Biswas, college teacher Kaniska Chowdhury and writer Manik Mandal -- went to the villages to meet Maoists and leaders of their frontal body People's Committee against Police Atrocities (PCPA). They were also present in a kangaroo court (peoples’ court) besides providing financial help to the outfit. The CPI-Maoist West Bengal State Committee spokesperson Khokon, however, denied any link with the three intellectuals saying, ”We never met them and have no links with them. The Government is trying to gag the voice of people who are trying to find out the actual condition at Lalgarh.
