Militants carried out an aborted fidayeen (suicide) attack on a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) camp at Lal Chowk in Srinagar, killing a Policeman and injuring nine persons, including a CRPF trooper, reports Daily Excelsior. Heavily armed militants, believed to be two in number, lobbed a grenade towards the bunker of CRPF (132nd battalion) outside the remnants of Palladium Cinema in Lal Chowk at around 2.15pm (IST) and tried to enter the makeshift complex of the Security Forces (SFs), Police officials said. They said attempt of the militants was thwarted as the SF personnel opened firing, forcing the militants to take refuge in Punjab hotel across the road. As the militants took positions inside the hotel, Police and other SFs cordoned off the area to prevent the militants from escaping from the incident. The militants hurled two more grenades towards the SFs and the two sides exchanged intermittent firing till the filing of last report. The SFs adopted a 'go slow' strategy in the initial stages as thousands of civilians were trapped in their offices or homes located in the vicinity of the hostilities, a senior Police officer said.

The Taliban militants on February 26 carried out coordinated suicide attacks at two hotels in Kabul, the capital city of Afghanistan, killing at least nine Indians, including two Major-rank Army officers, reports The Hindu. At least 10 others, including five Indian Army officers, were injured in the strike that killed eight others, including locals and nationals from other countries. The bombers, believed to be three in number, struck at the guest houses, particularly at Park Residence, rented out by the Indian Embassy for its staffers and those linked to India’s developmental work in Afghanistan. External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna said that as per the preliminary information provided by Afghanistan Government officials, “up to nine Indians...have lost their lives.” “A few Indians have been injured, most of whom are reported to be out of danger. Arrangements are being made for their adequate and expeditious treatment, if necessary, by evacuating them to India,” he said in a statement. However, sources in the Indian embassy in Kabul said that six Indians were confirmed dead. IBN Live quoted Indian Ambassador in Kabul Jayant Prasad as saying that it looked like a 26/11 (November 26, 2008 Mumbai terrorist attacks) type attack specifically targeting Indians. "Six Indians died in yesterday's [February 26] attack. It was a 26/11 type of attack. The attackers searched each and every room and killed people," added Prasad.

Eight persons, including three Policemen and two children, were killed, while 23 others were injured when a suicide bomber blew himself up outside the house of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Information Minister Mian Iftikhar Hussain in the Khan Sher Garhi area of Peshawar on July 26, according to Daily Times. At the time of the attack, a number of people were gathered in and outside the Awami National Party (ANP) leader’s house to condole the death of his son, Rashid, who was gunned down by militants on July 24. “A suicide bomber blew himself up when a Police constable tried to stop him from entering the residence of the minister,” Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Liaquat Ali said. Eyewitnesses, who had come to offer condolences, said that the suicide bomber, aged between 20 and 22, was wearing black clothes and detonated the explosives when Police tried to stop him from entering Iftikhar’s house. Police said 10 kilogrammes of explosives were used in the attack. The Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) claimed responsibility for the bombing, saying their goal was to kill Iftikhar Hussain because his political party “is allied with the United States”. “This is just the beginning,” Taliban spokesman Ahsanullah Ahsan told The Associated Press by telephone. “We will carry out more attacks against the party. We will destroy their roots,” he said.

Police said that about 10 kilogrammes of explosives were used in the blast. Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) claimed responsibility for the killing and threatened to stage more such attacks. “We killed him, he was our target. 26 persons, including a former member of the National Assembly (NA) were killed and 40 others injured when a suicide bomber blew himself up inside a mosque in Wana town of South Waziristan in Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) at 3 pm (PST) on August 23, reports Daily Times. Pro-Government cleric Maulana Noor Muhammad was delivering a sermon in the area’s biggest mosque when the attack occurred. “Maulvi Noor Muhammad was among the 26 killed in the suicide attack inside his madrassa adjacent to his mosque,” Wana assistant political agent, Jamal Azmat said. No outfit has claimed responsibility for the attack so far. However, ‘foreign elements’ who were earlier forced out of the area are believed to be behind the attack. Maulana Noor Muhammad was opposed to the presence of Uzbek militants and had provided support to dislodge them. Slain Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) leader Baitullah Mehsud had allowed the “displaced Uzbek militants” to stay in Mehsud areas, which triggered a strong reaction from the tribesmen from the Ahmedzai Wazir areas. The former MNA had also played his role in brokering a peace deal in the past. The cleric was associated with the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (Fazlur Rehman fraction).

Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LeJ) Al-alami claimed responsibility for the three attacks that occurred minutes apart in Bhaati Gate locality of Lahore. The mourning procession was in its last stages and was about to end at Karbala Gamay Shah near Data Darbar, when the terrorists stuck. A terrorist, standing on a nearby rooftop, threw a hand grenade on the crowd. The explosion killed one person and injured dozens others. A suicide bomber, who succeeded in penetrating to the middle of the crowd, then exploded himself at Bhatti Gate Chowk, about 100 yards from the site of the grenade attack. Meanwhile, Lahore Commissioner of Police Khusro Pervez acknowledged before the media that Police negligence was one of the main reasons behind the explosions and the subsequent violence. At least 65 people, 18 children among them, were killed and 70 injured in a suicide attack on the Friday congregation in the mosque in Darra Adamkhel area of the Kohat Frontier Region. The mosque is about one kilometre from the main camp of Security Forces (SFs) set up in a degree college. The Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) denied having any hand in the attack and, instead, blamed foreign agents fighting SFs in tribal areas. Security officials in Peshawar said they suspected that the militants of Tariq Afridi fraction of TTP carried out the attack. Their target, the officials said, was the Momin Afridi fraction which had raised a lashkar (tribal militia) and supported SFs’ action against militants loyal to Tariq Afridi.
