At least 17 militants were killed as the Army’s 59th Division engaged in an offensive on the Welioya front captured the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam’s (LTTE’s) strategic Michael Base on July 4-afternoon, Daily News reports. The Michael Base, part of the 1-4 Base, is located seven-km north of Janakapura. Military spokesman Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara said, "The base is located north of Janakapura where the 59 Division intensified offensive attacks. It is marching forward to the LTTE defence lines. Troops are consolidating their positions at the Michael base following three days of fierce fighting." He added that the Michael base, similar to the Munnagam base - the first base in the 1-4 complex captured earlier -, was an underground structure. The structure of the Michael base was extended in an area containing 200 square metres. The security forces (SFs) launched a search and clear operation in the area following the capturing of the Base.

The SLAF spokesman Wing Commander Janaka Nanayakkara told Daily News, "Air Force intelligence confirmed that 22 Black Tigers were killed in the air raid and a group of Black Tigers were engaged in a rehearsal at the time of the air attack." Udayarkattikkulam area is considered as a nerve centre of the outfit in the Mullaitivu district and had been used for special training for its leaders.

The Vavunikkulam area is located three-km south of Mallavi Town in the Mullaitivu district. Military spokesman Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara said, "A fierce fight erupted when troops launched an attack towards the LTTE defence lines early in the morning. Troops confronting the Tigers’ resistance advanced towards the LTTE front lines and captured the Vavunikkulam Tank." The security forces (SFs) also recovered seven dead bodies of the militants along with a 120-mm weapon (artillery mortar), two 81-mm mortars, forty-eight 120-mm rounds, seventy-four 81mm ammunition rounds, four ICOM sets, two motorbikes, one T-81 weapon, five T-56 weapons, one binocular, two tractors and many other explosive devices, adds Sri Lanka Army (SLA).

The troops on July 25 repulsed a Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) counter-attack on the Vavunikkulam tank bund south of Malawi in the Mullaitivu district which the security forces (SFs) had captured a day earlier, reports Daily News. "So far the troops have collected 36 Tiger bodies in the Vavunikkulam area killing more than 55 of them during the battle to capture Vavunikkulam tank bund and the subsequent attack to repulse the counter attack by the LTTE to regain control of the area," Brigadier Nanayakkara said. Eight senior LTTE cadres, identified as ‘Lieutenant Colonel’ Pallavan, ‘Major’ Ambumani, Selvakannan, Sellappu, Muhi, Illambu, Sudar and Jenathan, who were at the commanding level of the 'Charles Anthony' brigade in Mannar sector were among the slain militants, adds Sri Lanka Army reports. As reported earlier, 25 militants were killed when the troops captured Vavunikkulam tank on July 24.

During subsequent search operations, the SFs recovered the dead bodies of seven militants, including four of the Imran Pandiyan Group and three of the Sea Tigers (cadres of the sea wing of the LTTE), along with one Multi Purpose Machine Gun (MPMG), one Rocket Propeller Gun (RPG), five T-56 assault rifles, two radio sets. Troops of the 593 Brigade, in a subsequent search operation, recovered the dead bodies of three Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) militants and an armour plated cab. Kumulamunai, 10-km south of Mullaitivu, is the first settlement after the massive Andankulam forest reserve in the south of Mullaitivu. Troops now reportedly control the Mulliyavali village west of Kumulamunai and next to the Nagacholai forest reserve.

Colombo Page reports that the Sri Lankan Navy confronted a Sea Tiger (sea wing of the LTTE) flotilla off the coast of Nayaru in the Mullaitivu district killing six Sea Tigers and destroying two boats in the pre-dawn hours of November 18 (today), the military said. According to defence sources, the Navy's elite Special Boat Squadron personnel upon detecting a cluster of seven LTTE boats along the coastal waters off Nayaru fired at the boats and destroyed two of the boats while damaging another. The Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) MI-24 helicopter gun ships also provided close air support to the Navy causing the other four other LTTE craft to flee. Citing intercepted LTTE communication, defence officials said six militants were confirmed killed and as many injured.
