On January 17, troops of the 59th Division clashed with militants at Puthukkudiyiruppu in the Mullaitivu District and subsequently recovered the dead bodies of eight militants along with one Light Machine gun, 10 T-56 weapons, 1000 rounds of T-56 ammunition, six dog tags and one I-com radio set. In a separate incident, the SFs found a boat manufacturing centre of the LTTE from the same area, reports SLA. Two dovra boats, two water jets and seven small boats were also found at the location. One more LTTE training camp built in the east of Puthukkudiyiruppu was captured by the troops. Two buildings of 40 x 20 and six buildings of 30 x 20 were among constructions found inside the training camp protected by strong bunkers including six overhead bunkers.

Security Forces (SFs) reached closer to the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam’s (LTTE) Puthukkudiyiruppu town, the outfit’s last stronghold, and regained a section of the earth bund in the Kombavil area of Mullaitivu District on February 23, reported Daily News. Military spokesman Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara said, “Troops successfully repulsed LTTE resistance and progressed further into the LTTE defence line. Following a fierce battle troops recovered three LTTE bodies and two T-56 assault rifles from the scene.” He added that the LTTE cadres had built an earth bund from North to South fortifying the Iranapali area, which is considered a key LTTE foothold in northeast Puthukkudiyiruppu, the sources said. According to military sources the SFs have now encircled Puthukkudiyiruppu town from all directions and positioned themselves within 400 metres of striking distance. The outfit’s territory in Mullaitivu jungles are now confined to a mere 73 square kilometres, added sources.

At least 19 Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) militants were killed and more than 200 others encircled as the entire Puthukkudiyiruppu town and Iranapalai area in Mullaitivu District came under Security Forces (SFs) control by the evening of April 1. The SFs have surrounded the last LTTE terrain in north-east Puthukkudiyiruppu after capturing Pachchaippulmoaddai junction, the last supply route connected to the No Fire Zone (NFZ) from the mainland. "We believe that more than 200 Tiger cadres were trapped inside this terrain and troops are conducting search operations in search of them," an unnamed official told Daily News. During the search operations conducted in the area, the SFs recovered dead bodies of 32 militants along with a large cache of arms, ammunition and vehicles. At least 45 militants were killed when heavy fighting erupted between the Security Forces (SFs) and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) militants in the north east of Puthukkudiyiruppu in Mullaitivu District on April 3. The General Officer Commanding the 58th Division, Brigadier Shavendra Silva, told Daily News that some more militants are fighting inside the one square kilometre terrain as they have no chance to escape from the area. He also said there were strong indications that LTTE chief Velupillai Prabhakaran and senior leader Pottu Amman were inside the terrain. In addition, troops engaged in search and clear operations recovered a bullet proof limousine confirmed to have been used by Prabhakaran close to a luxury air-conditioned bungalow inside the terrain. Military spokesman Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara said that the luxury bullet proof car was recovered along with four more burnt cars closer to the luxury house. "Losing Tiger cadres, having lost all hopes for a last-minute salvation, have vandalized and set ablaze all the five cars, including the chauffeur-driven limousine, believed to have been used by top-rung Tiger leaders," the Brigadier added.

An unspecified number of Sea Tigers were killed by the troops. One unicorn vehicle, three tractors, one pressure mine, eight Rocket Propeller Grenade bombs, 350 anti-personnel mines (APMs), 50 Arul type bombs, two hundred and twenty 5.0-mm ammunition, 40 packs of 12.7 ammunition, 80 hand grenades, 50 Improvised Explosive Devices, 50 detonators, 12 claymore mines and one compressor were found from this Sea Tiger base. It is believed most of the boats were forcibly taken away either by fleeing civilians or militants themselves when the troops were circling them.
