Sri Lankan security forces, the Defence Ministry said, continued to repulse attempts by Liberation tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) rebel forces from advancing further from the stretch of the A9 highway they have been occupying. In the ongoing battles at various places in the Jaffna peninsula, seven more government troops and 71 LTTE cadres were killed, taking the death toll to 209. It was reported on May 12 that a total 131 died in the recent battles.

The government's Special Media Information Centre (SMIC) said on May 25 that ground troops successfully repulsed attacks in the Sarasalai area by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Elam (LTTE), on May 24, with close support from the air force. Seven soldiers were killed in the clashes, while five officers and 41 soldiers were wounded. During a cordon and search operation in Achchuveli, troops killed five LTTE rebels, while a soldier was also killed in the rebel-counter-attack. Five more LTTE cadres and a soldier of a patrol party were killed in clashes reported near Omanthai. Six persons were killed in a mortar attack in Kathanakudi, near Batticaloa. The government and the LTTE blamed each other for the deaths. Besides, a senior People's Liberation Organisation of Tamil Eelam (PLOTE) leader and his aide died in a claymore mine blast in Vavuniya, on May 25.
