A fierce sea clash broke out after about 20 LTTE boats attacked a cargo ship, reported Associated Press. Navy ships backed by air fire destroyed three of the LTTE boats, killing at least six of the outfit’s cadres, Navy spokesperson, Commander D.K.P. Dassanayake, said. The Hindu quoted military officials as saying that a boat packed with explosives rammed the City of Liverpool cargo carrier off Point Pedro as it was leaving the Jaffna peninsula after unloading wheat flour. "A cluster of Tiger boats attacked the ship while another cluster engaged the navy gunboats," Dassanayake added. He said the Air Force was called and said the merchant vessel also had several security force personnel who were returning rebel fire. The ship had a crew of two Indians, seven Indonesians and 10 Sri Lankans. Military spokesman Brigadier Prasad Samarasinghe told BBC Sandeshaya that three Navy personnel sustained injuries in the incident.

At least 10 sailors were killed when the Sea Tigers, naval wing of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), boats attacked and infiltrated a Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) base on an island off the Jaffna peninsula before dawn on May 24 (today), the military said, according to Reuters. Denying the LTTE claim that 35 sailors were killed in the incident, military spokesperson Brigadier Prasad Samarasinghe informed, "The Tigers have attacked a small naval detachment on Delft island in Jaffna. Less than 10 sailors are dead," adding, "We didn't even have 35 people there. That's totally false propaganda." The SLN spokesperson, Commander D. K. P Dassanayake, said that the outfit attacked the navy base at Delft in a flotilla of 15 boats and navy sailors sank one of them in attempts to repulse the ambush, adds Associated Press. The LTTE military spokesperson Rasiah Ilanthirayan, however, claimed that they swiftly overran the base and later found the bodies of 35 sailors. "The fighting lasted only 20 minutes and we completely overran the camp," Ilanthirayan said, adding that the cadres returned to their own base soon after the raid.

Following this, 16 sea Tiger boats including six suicide boats attacked the Navy,” military spokesperson Brigadier Prasad Samarasinghe said, adding, “The sea battle lasted for four hours from 1.30 am to 4.30 a.m. The sailors foiled the attack successfully causing heavy damage to the sea Tiger cadres. We believe that the LTTE suffered heavy damage. The sailors retaliated the attack with the assistance of the Air Force.” According to the LTTE communications intercepts, more than 18 Sea Tiger cadres, including four leaders, were killed, informed Samarasinghe, adding, four sailors were also killed and an equal number of them sustained injuries in the incident. The Navy also destroyed four LTTE suicide boats out of the 18 and severely damaged another two. The Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) destroyed two Sea-Tiger (sea wing of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam [LTTE]) boats which were trying to pass off as part of a cluster of Indian trawlers in the Vidattaltivu area of Mannar district on July 28-evening, reported The Hindu. Six LTTE cadres were killed in the incident. "Navy patrol craft had initially detected a cluster of Indian trawlers poaching in the Sri Lankan waters at a location 10 nautical miles west of Vidattaltivu. When the navy craft approached the boat cluster, two suspicious boats that were among the Indian boats speeded themselves away from the Indian boats firing rocket propelled grenades and small arms at the navy craft. After a short sea confrontation, the navy sailors were able to destroy the terror boats. There were four LTTE cadres in one boat and two in the other", the SLN said. It further claimed that the north western coast of the island from north of Mannar to Elephant Pass has become the main platform that enables the LTTE to continue its cross-border activities, since it had lost control over the eastern waters.
