Shanmuganathan Ravishankar, was killed on January 5-evening in a “random claymore attack” by the Sri Lanka Army’s Deep Penetration Unit at Pallamadu in the Mannar district, the pro-LTTE TamilNet stated in a report, according to The Hindu. Charles, who has been in charge of internal intelligence within the ranks of the LTTE ground forces and led an external operations corps and regular combat force that has been deployed in Mannar district, was killed along with three LTTE “lieutenants” in the ambush while they were travelling in a van between Iluppaikkadavai and Pallamadu at 3:10 p.m. Confirming the news, the Sri Lanka Defence Ministry said that Charles was deputy to Pottu Amman, the chief of the LTTE’s intelligence wing.

"Around 12.45 am the Security Forces advanced from their FDLs in the Muhamalai area and smashed the LTTE bunkers in their first attack," military spokesman Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara said, adding, "In the pre-emptive attack the Security Forces overran 35 Tiger bunkers, physically 20 bunkers were destroyed and around 20 LTTE cadres killed." The LTTE withdrew to the second FDLs and the SFs advanced on this too forcing the LTTE to flee the area. The SFs launched another attack on the LTTE’s second FDLs in Muhamalai and Nagarkovil with T-55 tanks and destroyed 10 bunkers while killing 10 militants. "Vehicles of the fleeing Tiger cadres with their injured were also fired at by the Security Forces.
