Two top Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) leaders, identified as Eelamaran, leader in charge of Jaffna, and his deputy Udayan, were among six outfit cadres killed at Suruvil in the Kayts Island area of Jaffna district on April 29, reported Media Centre for National Security. According to reports, naval troops conducted a cordon and search operation following information about their presence in the area and as they were ready to enter the Amman Kovil/Puliyankadal premises with the Kovil incumbent they were fired upon by the outfit cadres from inside the Kovil. Naval troops retaliated with small arms which resulted in two explosions. In the operation all five LTTE cadres who were inside the Kovil were killed. The incumbent of the Kovil was also killed in the crossfire. Troops also recovered arms and ammunition from the incident site.

They went into action and attacked the LTTE boats which were spying on the Navy coast guard. Following this, 16 sea Tiger boats including six suicide boats attacked the Navy,” military spokesperson Brigadier Prasad Samarasinghe said, adding, “The sea battle lasted for four hours from 1.30 am to 4.30 a.m. The sailors foiled the attack successfully causing heavy damage to the sea Tiger cadres. We believe that the LTTE suffered heavy damage. The sailors retaliated the attack with the assistance of the Air Force.” According to the LTTE communications intercepts, more than 18 Sea Tiger cadres, including four leaders, were killed, informed Samarasinghe, adding, four sailors were also killed and an equal number of them sustained injuries in the incident. The Navy also destroyed four LTTE suicide boats out of the 18 and severely damaged another two. The LTTE flotilla had come to the Delft Island (42 square kilometres) from Mannar and Pooneryn and attacked the Navy guard from the ground.

SLN sources said the Fast Attack Craft patrolling along the Point Pedro coast observed a suspicious boat moving north close to the beach and alerted the SLN commandos of the Special Boat Squadron who intercepted the boat in the Manalkadu area. Two LTTE cadres on board opened fire at the naval personnel who retaliated killing one of the outfit’s cadres while the other jumped overboard. The SLN commandos later recovered the body of the slain LTTE cadre and also captured the small boat fitted with a eight horse power outboard motors, a global positioning system, a hand phone, 40-mm automatic grenade launcher, 14 grenades used for the launcher, two magazines of the machine gun and a cyanide capsule.

"Troops have taken full control over the Arippu area, and now they are consolidating their defenses," he said, adding, the troops recovered the dead body of one LTTE cadre along with many weapons. However, the LTTE claimed that they killed one soldier and lost one of their cadres during the clash, adds AFP. It also claimed that eight civilians fleeing the area were killed in a mine attack carried out by the SFs.
