At least 30 of the 214 Sri Lankan soldiers who died fighting separatist rebels for Elephant pass died of dehydration after guerrillas cut off the area's only water source. The deaths came after Tamil Tigers overran Yakachchi, the main water source for the large military base at Elephant Pass, and blew up the electric pumps that supplied water to the camps. On April 25, air force jets and helicopter gunships hit rebel positions but no details of casualties were available. Two days after the military's devastating loss of Elephant Pass, the rebels and the government gave conflicting numbers of dead. Rebels said more than 1,000 soldiers were killed, while the army admitted on April 24, to 88 dead. But on April 25, officials raised their own toll to 214 after the rebels turned over 126 bodies to the International Committee of the Red Cross.
