According to Navy Spokesman Commander D. K. P. Dassanayake, the boats were suspected to be ferrying a large stock of weapons and explosives. A Navy vessel four kilometres off the Kalpitiya Sea had come under heavy arms fire from the two LTTE boats which ignored orders from the Navy to stop. The Navy then opened fire at the two crafts. While the Navy was engaging the Sea-Tigers, two other crafts arrived from the direction of Silawathura from which shots were fired at the Navy. Four soldiers were killed died and two others sustained injuries when the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) rebels fired artillery and mortar shells at the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) detachment at Mankerni in the Batticaloa district on January 13, reports Xinhua quoting defence officials. According to Associated Press, military spokesperson, Brig. Prasad Samarasinghe, said, "They (rebels) targeted our camp in Mankerni with artillery fire late Saturday and we lost four soldiers." Earlier, Sri Lanka Air Force jets damaged a LTTE base in the Verugal area, about 20-kilometers north of the Military's Mankerni camp, said Samarasinghe, adding, in the Ampara district, anti-terrorist commandoes captured two more LTTE bases, bringing the total number of the outfit’s bases captured this week to four. Seven smaller camps have also fallen in Ampara, further south of Batticaloa, the military said. The Special Task Force on January 9 had captured the main LTTE base at Kanjikuduchiaru after launching its offensive code named "Victory Assured" in the area in order to capture LTTE-controlled thickets in the Ampara district.

At least six passengers were feared dead and sixty-three other received injuries in a blast that was triggered inside a bus bound for Giriulla from Nittambuwa in the Gampaha district on January 5, according to Sri Lanka Army (SLA) reports. The blast, believed to have been caused by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) cadres could have been triggered using an explosive device that might have been placed inside the bus. Six of those passengers in the crowded bus died on the spot following the explosion. BBC Sinhala adds that curfew has been imposed in Attanagalle, Watupitiwala and Nittambuwa until 6 a.m. on January 6 (today). Defense Affairs spokesman, Minister Keheliya Rambukwella, accused the outfit for the blast. It was clear that the LTTE was responsible "considering their past track record", Rambukwella told BBC Sinhala. However, the outfit has denied any involvement in the incident.

Associated Press reports that the armed men ambushed two camps belonging to the breakaway faction of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) led by ‘Colonel’ Karuna at Valaichenai in the Batticaloa district on January 9, killing several cadres of the Karuna faction. The pro-LTTE Website Tamil Net reported that unidentified assailants killed at least 10 members of the breakaway Karuna rebel faction and wounded four more in the ambush on paramilitaries - the word the mainstream Tamil Tigers use to describe the renegade guerrillas who broke away in 2004, adding, "Two paramilitary installations have been attacked in Valaichenai in Batticaloa district." Meanwhile, the Defense Ministry blamed the LTTE for the attacks. An official at the Defense Ministry's Media Center for National Security (MCNS) in Colombo confirmed the attacks, but said only two Karuna members died and that two were wounded.

Six LTTE cadres were killed in the incident. "Navy patrol craft had initially detected a cluster of Indian trawlers poaching in the Sri Lankan waters at a location 10 nautical miles west of Vidattaltivu. When the navy craft approached the boat cluster, two suspicious boats that were among the Indian boats speeded themselves away from the Indian boats firing rocket propelled grenades and small arms at the navy craft. After a short sea confrontation, the navy sailors were able to destroy the terror boats. There were four LTTE cadres in one boat and two in the other", the SLN said. It further claimed that the north western coast of the island from north of Mannar to Elephant Pass has become the main platform that enables the LTTE to continue its cross-border activities, since it had lost control over the eastern waters.
