Santosh Vasant Shelar alias Vishwa alias Painter (33), a Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) ‘deputy commander’, who disappeared from Pune in 2010, has surrendered to the Pune Police in the Pune District of Maharashtra, reports marathi.hindustantimes.com on January 22. Shelar has been ill for the past few days and has come to Pune. Shelar is a native of Kasewadi, in Bhawani Peth, and has been missing since 2010. His family had filed a missing complaint at the Khadak Police Station. The anti-Naxal operation (ANO) team of Rajnandgaon District in Chhattisgarh announced the list of wanted Maoists in the Tanda Area Committee in 2019. In this list, the name Shelar was in the fourth position. The ANO team said that he was the ‘deputy commander’ of the area committee. Shelar was also alleged to be associated with the Pune-based cultural outfit Kabir Kala Manch (KKM), which according to the Police is a “Maoist front organisation.” He was said to have a 303 rifle. Currently, he has been admitted to Sassoon Hospital and is being monitored by the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS).
