The Union Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment (MoSJE) Dr. Virendra Kumar, in response to a query in Lok Sabha (lower house of the Parliament), has revealed that “over nine lakh people (0.9 M) in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) are struggling with drug addiction”, reports Greater Kashmir. Union Ministry said that an estimated 1,44,000 persons were consuming cannabis in J&K of which 36,000 were females and the rest 1,08,000 males. Opioid addiction was prevalent among 5,34,000 males and 8000 females, sedative addiction among 1,60,000 males and 8000 females. The Ministry added that the other drug addiction substances used in J&K are cocaine, inhalants, and hallucinogens, which were consumed by over 2,00,000 persons.“The ministry supports 340 Integrated Rehabilitation Centres for Addicts (IRCAs), of which one is running in J&K”, the statement added.
