Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina addressing a press conference at her official residence in Dhaka city on May 3 clarified the Government’s position on the 13-point demand of the Hefazat-e-Islam (HeI), reports The Daily Star. Hasina said, “We’ve already gone through HeI demands. Many of these have already been implemented while some are in the process. The HeI’s first demand is a reinstatement of the phrase “Absolute trust and faith in the Almighty Allah” in the constitution as one of the fundamental principles of state policy. Responding to this, Hasina noted the constitution begins with Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim [In the Name of Allah, the Compassionate, and the Merciful]. “This is a verse of the Holy Quran. No other sentence could be more appropriate,” she said, adding it demonstrates faith in Allah. The PM also mentioned that Islam is now the state religion. Meanwhile, HeI Nayeb-e-Amir (Vice-President) Nur Hossain Kasemi at a briefing at HeI’s office at Dhaka city on May 3, said their cadres (Tauhidi Janata) will be deployed at six entry points of the city on May 5 to lay siege to Dhaka peacefully, reports New Age. Kasemi said that their men would gather at Gabtali, Baliarpur of Aminbazar, Demra, Buriganga Bridge at Postagola and on road stretches between Abdullahpur and Tongi Bridge and Kanchpur Bridge and Jatrabari. He, however, said that they were yet to decide the main venue of their rally in the capital and added that the decision would be made when HeI Amir Ahmad Shafi would reach Dhaka. Kasemi urged the owners and workers of all kinds of transports to keep the vehicles off the road on May.

At least 28 people have died on the second day of street battles between Police and tens of thousands of Hefajat-e-Islam (HeI) cadres in Dhaka city on May 6 (today), reports The Times of India. Police said they used sound grenades, water cannon, tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse at least 70,000 Islamists who were camped at Motijheel as part of a push for a new blasphemy law. Mozammel Haq, a Police inspector at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, said that 11 bodies were brought to the clinic. One victim was a Policeman who had been hacked in the head by protesters with machetes. Eleven other bodies were taken to three other clinics. There was also deadly violence at Kanchpur on the southeastern outskirts of the capital. More than 5,000 Islamists clashed with police and border guards, prompting security forces to respond with live rounds. At least six people were killed there including three Policemen and a Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB). On May 5, at least four civilians were killed and hundred others injured as HeI cadres enforced their "Dhaka siege" programme across Dhaka City on May 5, reports New Age. Two of the deceased were identified as Siddiqur Rahman and Zubair. Identities of two others could not be known. By evening, the Home Ministry deployed 20 platoons of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and they were patrolling the city. In the night, Police did not allow any kind of gathering at any crossing across the city. Ruling party activists also took to the streets alongside the Police at the instruction of the party high command.

The United States (US) Government in a recent report came down hard on Bangladesh for attacks on the religious minorities, reports Daily Star. The report, however, stated that the trend in government’s respect for religious freedom did not change significantly in 2012. It generally respected religious freedom in Bangladesh. The US State Department, in its International Religious Freedom Report for 2012 released in Washington DC on Monday, said there were reports of societal abuses and discrimination based on religious affiliation, belief, or practice. According to the report, there were scattered attacks on the members of religious and ethnic minorities, most notably against the Buddhists in Ramu in September and October 2012. “Most attacks consisted of arson and looting of religious sites and homes. Because many members of minority religious groups also had low economic and social status, they were often seen as having little political recourse,” the report added. It said members of Hindu, Christian, Buddhist, and Ahmadiyya Muslim minority groups had experienced harassment and sometimes violence from the Sunni Muslim majority population.

Despite adverse report from Varanasi District administration, the Uttar Pradesh (UP) Government, on May 31, decided to withdraw cases against suspected Bangladesh based militant organisation Harkat-ul-Jihad-e-Islami (HuJI) militant, Shamim, reports The Times of India. The District administration was directed to engage a prosecution officer to complete formalities like submitting application before the court for withdrawal of cases against Shamim as per the Government's decision. Shamim’s involvement in March 7, 2006, serial blasts at Sankatmochan temple and Cantonment railway station was exposed by the Special Task Force (STF) of UP Police. On STF's recommendation, a cash reward of INR 20,000 was announced in 2007 for information leading to his arrest. But, no agency could succeed in tracing him. Shamim's call records maintained by the investigating agencies in 2006 and 2007 showed that he was calling his counterparts in Bangladesh frequently while calls were also made to some persons in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) and Jabalpur in Madhya Pradesh. The exercise is continuing for the withdrawal of cases against Shamim, who had remained traceless after November 23, 2007 Kutchehri blasts.
