According to Daily Star, a case has been filed with a magistrate's court in Satkhira accusing four Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI) leaders for forging Madrassa (seminary) textbooks. Bhomra union Dakhil Madrassa teacher filed the case with the court of Magistrate Abu Jafar on November 9 and after a preliminary hearing the court ordered the accused to appear before the court within 15 days. The accused are Sadar sub-district Ameer (chief) of the Jamaat and Kushkhali Union Parishad Chairman Maulana Abdul Gaffar who is also the son-in-law of former JeI lawmaker Maulana Abdul Khaleque, JeI leaders Maulana Altaf Hossain and Maulana Jamal Uddin and Kamal Uddin owner of School and College Library. All the accused are the district leaders of Madrassa Shikkhak Parishad, an organisation of the JeI. According to the complainant, the accused changed the cover and name of writers and publishers of several books of class six to class nine and published those under the name of fake writers and publishers in 2005. The complainant said that the JeI leaders earned over Taka 8 lakh by selling those forged books to students.

According to Daily Star, a detained operative of the Harkat-ul-Jihad-al Islami Bangladesh (HuJI-B) on November 9 said the outfit had carried out the grenade attack on the Awami League (AL) rally at Derai in Sunamganj in June 2004. In a confessional statement before a first class magistrate in Sunamganj, Hafez Arif Ahmed alias Naieem said that he had been given five grenades to carry out the attack. HuJI-B had also recruited a madrassa (seminary) student, Naziur Rahman Nazu, for the purpose. Nazu reportedly lobbed a grenade at the rally, which killed an AL activist.

The Speedy Trial Tribunal-1 in Dhaka on November 9 awarded death sentences to two members of the Majlish-e-Shura (highest decision-making body) of the Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB), Salauddin alias Salehin of Narayanganj and Rafiq Hassan alias Hafez Mahmud of Jamalpur, in connection with the killing of Abdul Gani alias Joseph Mandal, a medicine trader of Melandah in Jamalpur, in September 2004. According to Daily Star, following the verdict, the convicted JMB cadres warned judge Shahed Nooruddin of death saying that "their court" has already sentenced the judge to death and the order would be executed shortly. The convicts reportedly said that those who followed the "worldly laws" are not real judges. The convicts can appeal to the High Court against the verdict within 30 days from the day of receipt of the judgment copy.

Three suspected Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) militants were arrested from Miakhannagar at Bakolia in Chittagong city on November 10 afternoon, reports Daily Star. The arrested militants, identified as Wahid, Humayun Kabir and Abdur Rahim, hail from Barisal district. Police sources said that the militants had arrived in the Chittagong city three months ago and were planning to carry out subversive activities in the area.

According to Daily Star, a special tribunal in the Naogaon district on November 14 sentenced seven militants of the Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) to 80 years rigorous imprisonment each for possessing arms and ammunition. They were identified as Kawsar Sardar, Jalaluddin, Saidur Rahman alias Sayeed, Mosharraf Hossain alias Mosha and Akram Hossain alias Malek of Harirampur village under Patnitala sub-district of Naogaon, Abdul Barek alias Barek of Chakujal village in Mahadebpur sub-district, and Mostafizur Rahman alias Mosta of Boirati village in the Kaliganj sub-district of Lalmonirhat. All the seven were arrested by the Rapid Action Battalion personnel during separate raids at Harirampur and Mahmudpur villages in the Patnitala sub-district of Naogaon on February 4, 2006.

The Supreme Court has fixed November 19 for hearing the petitions of six Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) militants, seeking leave to appeal against the High Court’s death sentence on them. A seven-member full court of the Appellate Division, headed by Chief Justice Syed J. R. Mudassir Husain, passed the order on November 16, reports Daily Star. The JMB militants were identified as the outfit’s chief Abdur Rahman, his second-in-command Siddiqul Islam alias Bangla Bhai, Ataur Rahman Sunny, Abdul Awal and suicide bombers Iftekhar Hassan Al Mamun and Khaled Saifullah.

Huge quantities of firearms and explosives are being smuggled in through land and water routes ahead of the parliamentary elections, according to two separate reports prepared by the police and an unspecified intelligence agency. According to New Age, the reports submitted in October indicate that arms and explosives are being brought in from neighbouring India and Myanmar along with other smuggled items through the bordering districts of Chuadanga, Satkhira, Kushtia, Cox’s Bazaar, Sunamganj, Bandarban, Mymensingh, Netrokona, and Rangamati. Besides, sea routes are also being used for the smuggling. Importers under fake names are bringing in weapons hidden in consignments of various legitimate goods. On arrival, various syndicates are spreading the arms and explosives across the country, while many of these weapons are ending up in the hands of criminals and underground political operatives.

The EC Secretariat issued a gazette notification to that effect urging the electors to choose a member from each of the 300 constituencies to constitute the ninth parliament. The Awami League led 14-party combine, Jatiya Party (Ershad), Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and some other parties that have been asking for the reconstitution of the EC and opposing the announcement of the polling schedule before correction of the voter list have rejected the schedule. The Bangladesh National Party-led four-party alliance, however, has welcomed the announcement.

The Supreme Court (SC) on November 28 upheld the death sentences passed on the six militant leaders of the Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) for killing two judges in Jhalakathi, reports Daily Star. A seven-member full bench of the SC headed by Chief Justice J. R. Mudassir Hossain rejected the appeal of the militants seeking permission to appeal against a High Court judgement upholding the death sentences. The convicted militants, including JMB chief Abdur Rahman, his deputy Siddiqul Islam alias Bangla Bhai, Majlish-e-shura (the highest decision-making body) members Ataur Rahman Sunny, Abdul Awal, and Khaled Saifullah, suicide bomber Iftekhar al Mamun, will have to petition the president for mercy. In the absence of the mercy petition within the stipulated time, the jail authorities will issue death warrants fixing dates for their executions. Senior assistant judges, Jagannath Pandey and Sohel Ahmed, were killed in a suicide bomb attack at Purba Chadkati in the Jhalakathi town on November 14, 2005, in the wake of a series of bombings by the militants across the country.
