Imphal Free Press reports that services of passenger and transport vehicles running along the Imphal Moreh section of the National Highway-39 were cancelled from February 1 due to the threat of militant outfits to ‘increase’ the amount of extortion ‘collected’ from the vehicle owners. The report indicated that services had been cancelled after an unspecified militant outfit, operating actively along the highway, ‘demanded payment’ of Rs. 1500 per month per vehicle.

Hmar and Paite tribesmen, who were forced out by militants along the Assam-Mizoram border, returned to their homes at Thanlon and Parbung in the Churachandpur district, reports Telegraph. Nearly 1,000 villagers had reportedly fled their homes following a clash between the UNLF and Hmar Peoples Convention–Democratic (HPC-D) in January 2006. Meanwhile, both outfits accused one another of harassing the villagers and forcing their exodus. So far, 64 Improvised Explosive Devices had been neutralized in these two areas in the counter insurgency Operation Dragnet, according to Army sources.

It also promised appropriate action against anyone interfering with examination officials in the proper performance of their duty.
