Authorities imposed curfew in two Southern Districts and restrictions in parts of Anantnag and Srinagar as shutdown and curfew paralysed life for 24th consecutive day on August 1, reports Daily Excelsior. Curfew remained in place in two Districts including Kulgam, Pulwama and Imam Sahib, Shopian while restrictions were imposed in Anantnag town and in parts of Srinagar to thwart any protests against the civilian killings in Kashmir. A large contingent of Police and paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) were deployed in curfew and restriction bound areas to thwart protests. Police and CRPF blocked the roads by erecting concertina and barbed wires. Reports reaching here from Srinagar, Ganderbal, Kulgam, Anantnag, Shopian, Baramulla, Kupwara and Bandipora Districts suggested that clashes took place between Security Forces (SFs) and protesters at several places in which at least 40 people including a CRPF personnel were injured. Police and SFs fired tear smoke shells to disperse the protesters during which 15 protesters and 25 SF personnel including Commanding Officer of CRPF were injured.

Around 100 persons including Police and Para-military Force personnel were injured as clashes broke out at several places across Jammu and Kashmir amid curfew in parts of Valley and shutdown continued for 27th day on August 4, since the killing of Hizb-ul-Mujahideen (HM) ‘commander’ Burhan Wani on July 8, reports Daily Excelsior. At least 17 persons were injured during clashes between protesters and Security Forces (SFs) in Chotipora, Handwara in Kupwara District. Clashes broke out in the locality after men and women took to streets to protest against the killings in Kashmir. SFs tried to disperse the protesters who pelted stones on them leading to clashes. Over a dozen protesters were injured as Police and Paramilitary forces fired tear smoke shells and pellets at protesters in Sarendoo area of Kulgam District. Hundreds of people assembled in Yaripora, Frisal and other adjoining areas and staged massive protests. SFs resorted to teargas shelling and pellet firing against the protesters, injuring over a dozen. At D K Marg in Kulgam, SFs resorted to teargas shelling and pellet firing against the protesters, resulting in injuries to around 10 of them.Reports ofprotests were also received from Qoimoh area of Kulgam as well. At Srigufara in Anantnag, at least 20 persons, five of them with pellets, were injured when SFs used force against the protesters who took to streets in the area. Over a two dozen protesters were injured in clashes in Shopian District and 10 among the injured were shifted to PHC Pinjora for treatment. The protest erupted in Bongam and Bonbazar areas of the District after SFs intercepted a protest rally heading towards the Shopian town. They fired tear-smoke shells and pellets to disperse the protesters. Over two dozen protesters were injured and they have been hospitalized. Reports from Baramulla District said that several persons were injured as Police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) used force against protesters. A youth suffered pellet injuries at Bomai Sopore and at Warpora. Few youth were injured during clashes with SFs.

The clashes erupted as soon after deployments were withdrawn in the evening. Several people are reported to be injured. In the evening clashes erupted between stone throwing protesters and Police at posh Rajbagh area. Dozens of youth appeared near the Zero bridge Rajbagh and pelted stones on Police. However, they swung into action and dispersed the youth. Curfew remained in force in Anantnag, Shopian and Pampore towns of South Kashmir, Khanpora town in North Kashmir’s Baramulla District and in six Police Station areas of Srinagar.

They were intercepted by Police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) but the protesters pelted stones at them leading to clashes. Police and CRPF personnel fired tear smoke and pellets to disperse the protesters in which over a dozen protesters were injured and one Maqbool Wagay of Loolipora CharareShareef was killed. The protesters later defied curfew and reached Chadoora where they attacked Police Station with stones.

At least 10 persons were injured when clashes broke out between Security Forces (SFs) and protesters in Langate area of Kupwara District on August 7, reports Daily Excelsior. Two of the injured are critical with one having bullet and another pellet injury. Two persons were also injured when mob attacked Police post in Waterhail area of Budgam District. The mob pelted stones at the post and Police in retaliation fired tear smoke shells to disperse them. The stone throwing protests were also reported from Khanpora, Baramulla, Nowgam and Warpora Sopore area of the District. However, Police and SFs fired tear smoke shells to disperse them. Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kashmir, SJM Gillani Kashmir said that baring two incidents of stone pelting where miscreants attacked SF deployments at Warpora and Nowpora in Sopore, the situation in the Valley remained peaceful. The Valley observed shutdown, protests and curfew for 30th day. The train services between Banihal and Baramulla remained disrupted for 29th day on August 7, and major roads remained shut including the National Highway.

Curfew, shutdown and protests continued across Kashmir for 33rd day on August 10, during which over one dozen persons were injured in clashes that broke out at many places across the Valley, reports Daily Excelsior. Curfew in Old City, Maisuma and Batamaloo areas in Srinagar and Anantnag Districts continued while in parts of the Valley restrictions were imposed in several towns to thwart protests while rest of the city observed shutdown for 33rd day. Reports of protests and clashes were reported from several parts of Valley. A large contingent of Police and Paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel were deployed on roads and streets and they had erected concertina wires at entry and exit points in several localities to prevent any protests. Around 10 persons were injured clashes broke out at Lassipora area of Sogam in Lolab area of Kupwara District. Local residents said that Police fired teargas and pellets to foil the protest, resulting in injuries to the protesters. One youth Shabir Ahmad Lone was shifted to Srinagar as he was hit by a teargas canister in his abdomen. The clashes were also reported from Lalpora in Lolab. A large number of protesters gathered at Sangrama in Baramulla District on National Highway and pelted stones on the Security Forces (SFs) who were deployed on security duty. Police and CRPF deployed fired tear smoke shells and dispersed them. Police said “about 300 miscreants assembled near Sangrama in the jurisdiction of police station Tarzoo, Sopore and started pelting stones on the police party”. “Later, they were chased away by using mild force,” the Police spokesman added. Reports meanwhile from north Kashmir said that the SFs including Army are strictly enforcing night curfew at Baramulla, Kupwara and Sopore.

Alert troops noticed some suspicious movement along the LoC in Uri Sector in north Kashmir and challenged the intruders, an Army official said. He said the intruders opened fire at the Army positions which was retaliated by the soldiers. “Two militants were killed in the initial exchange of firing while three others were killed late in the day,” the official said. Militants ambushed an army convoy killing two army personnel and a Policeman and injured three Security Force (SF) personnel at Khwajabagh in Baramulla District on August 17 (today), reports Daily Excelsior. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Itmtiaz Hussain, said that two-three militants of Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) ambushed an army convoy in Baramulla town. “The attack took place at around 2:30 a.m. when the army convoy was on its way to border town of Uri and militants ambushed it from a lane in Baramulla town. One of our Police vehicle that was also on its way to Baramulla was caught in the ambush”, the SSP said.

A 25-year old protester identified as Irfan Ahmad was killed after he was hit by a teargas shell on the chest during clashes between Security Forces (SFs) and protesters at Malarata area in Fateh Kadal in Srinagar city on August 21, taking the death toll in the 44 days of violence in Kashmir to 68, reports Daily Excelsior. A group of protesters defied curfew in the area and carried out a protest march. Protesters pelted stones at SFs and they fired teargas shells to disperse them. Irfan of Malarata locality was hit by a teargas shell on his chest and he was removed to hospital where he died. The death of Irfan led to further protests in several parts of Srinagar city.Elsewhere, curfew was imposed in Srinagar city and other major towns of Kashmir and shutdown affected life in other parts where over 150 people were injured as clashes broke out at several places despite curfew. Around 75 people were injured at Behrampora village of Sopore in Baramulla District after people clashed with Police. Clashes broke out after protesters attacked Police and Special Operations Group (SOG) vehicles who tried to clear Rafiabad-Sopore road that was blocked at Behrampora by protesters. Around 75 injured have been admitted to Dangiwachha hospital and nine injured have been shifted to District Hospital Baramulla. Nine persons, including two women were injured as clashes broke out at Hiagam on the National highway in Baramulla District. Police fired teargas and used pellets to disperse the protesters in which nine were injured.

Curfew continued in Batamaloo and Maisuma areas of Civil Lines. Due to stringent curfew, the Friday congregational prayers at Jamia Masjid could not be offered. A senior Police officer said that Army’s 52nd Rashtriya Rifles (RR), 19th Mahar and Special Operations Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir Police cordoned off village Banday Bala in Sultanpora area of Chandoosa in Baramulla District after tip off about presence of five militants hiding in a house. As the Security Forces (SFs) cordoned off the village Banday Bala, militants hiding in the house fired on the Army party that was laying siege around the house. One Army jawan was injured in the firing. Army also retaliated leading to a brief gun battle but the militants managed to flee from the house towards nearby woods. Sources said that this group of five militants belonging to LeT infiltrated into Kashmir through Boniyar area of Uri sector of Baramulla District in the last week of June.

Oneprotester was killed and five others were injured in Ladoora area of Sopore in Baramulla District on August 31, reports Daily Excelsior. Condition of two injured is said to be critical and they have been admitted in Sher-I-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) hospital in Srinagar. Massive protests broke out at Ladoora after Army allegedly thrashed some traders at Fruit Mandi Sopore in North Kashmir. Reports said that the Army personnel went inside Sopore Fruit Mandi and asked the traders to resume their trade and it led to a verbal brawl between the two sides and the locals later protested against the Army. The protests were followed by violent clashes against the alleged thrashing of traders by army at Ladoora, a village in Rafiabad area of Sopore where from majority of the traders hail. A contingent of Army and Border Security Force (BSF) went to Ladoora to quell the protests. During the clashes, the Security Force (SF) personnel opened fire on protesters, resulting in injuries to six persons. One of them identified as Danish Manzoor of Nadihal, Baramulla succumbed to his injuries while two others identified as Idrees Altaf Malik and Ishaaq Bashir Lone are critical and were shifted to SKIMS in Soura. As the news about the death of Danish spread, hundreds of people took to streets at Old Town Baramulla, Sopore and Bandipora and staged massive protests. The protesters clashed with the SFs at several places including Kaloosa in Bandipora. Police and para-military SFs fired teargas and pellets to disperse the protesters.
